The mapping process allows each mechanism to appear as a field on the map. Ashby devised a map in which lines of constant strain rate are computed for variable stresses and temperatures at a fixed grain size. Transitions between viscous and non-viscous mechanisms can be readily identified in maps of this type. Recently Langdon proposed a deformation map in which iso-strain rate lines are computed for variable stresses and grain sizes at a fixed temperature. This map is particularly useful for materials in which diffusional creep modes are important, since they are very grain size dependent. This paper is a synopsis of a large number of creep experiments performed at high temperatures on polycrystalline aluminium and magnesium oxides, pure and doped with transition metal impurities, in order to create experimental creep deformation maps.

Book excerpt: This monograph has its origins in a two-day meeting with the same title held in London, England in the spring of 1987. The idea for the meeting came from members of the UK Mineral and Rock Physics Group. It was held under the auspices of, and made possible by the generous support of, the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland. Additional financial assistance was provided by ECC International pIc and the Cookson Group pIc. The aims of the London meeting were to survey the current state of knowledge about deformation processes in non-metallic materials and to bring together both experts and less experienced Earth scientists and ceramicists who normally had little contact but shared common interests in deformation mechanisms. This monograph has similar aims and, indeed, most of its authors were keynote speakers at the meeting. Consequently, most of the contributions contain a review element in addition to the presentation and discussion of new results. In adopting this format, the editors hope that the monograph will provide a valuable state-of-the-art sourcebook, both to active researchers and also to graduate students just starting in the relevant fields.

Book excerpt: This volume "Deformation of Ceramic Materials II" constitutes the proceedings of an international symposium held at The Pennsyl vania State University, University Park, PA on July 20, 21, and 22, 1983. It includes studies of semiconductors and minerals which are closely related to ceramic materials. The initial conference on this topic was held in 1974 at Penn State and the proceedings were published in the volume entitled "Deformation of Ceramic Materials." This conference emphasized the deformation behavior of crystals and po1ycrysta11ine and polyphase ceramics with internationally recognized authorities as keynote lecturers on the major subtopics. Several papers dealing with cavity nucleation and creep crack growth represent a major new research thrust in ceramics since the first conference. This collection of papers represents the state-of-the art of our understanding of the plastic deformation behavior of ceramics and the crystals of which they are composed. We are grateful for the suggestions of our International Advisory Committee .in recommending experts in their respective countries to participate. We are particularly grateful that the organizers of the previous Dislocation-Point Defect Interaction Workshops agreed to participate in the Penn State Symposium as an alternative at the suggestion of Prof. A.
