Book Turbulent Shear Flows I

Download or read book Turbulent Shear Flows I written by F. Durst and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book contains papers that have been selected from contributions to the First International Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows which was held from the 18th to 20th April 1977 at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, USA. Attend ees from close to 20 countries presented over 100 contributions at this meeting in which many aspects of the current activities in turbulence research were covered. Five topics received particular attention at the Symposium: Free Flows Wall Flows Recirculating Flows Developments in Reynolds Stress Closures New Directions in Modeling This is also reflected in the five chapters of this book with contributions from research workers from different countries. Each chapter covers the most valuable contributions of the conference to the particular chapter topic. Of course, there were many additional good con tributions to each subject at the meeting but the limitation imposed on the length of this volume required that a selection be made. The realization of the First International Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows was p- sible by the general support of: U. S. Army Research Office U. S. Navy Research Office Continuing Education Center of The Pennsylvania State University The conference organization was carried out by the organizing committee consisting of: F. Durst, Universitat Karlsruhe, Karlsruhe, Fed. Rep. of Germany V. W. Goldschmidt, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind. , USA B. E. Launder, University of California, Davis, Calif. , USA F. W. Schmidt, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Penna.

Book Heated Surface Jet Discharged Into a Flowing Ambient Stream

Download or read book Heated Surface Jet Discharged Into a Flowing Ambient Stream written by Louis H. Motz and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The temperature distribution in the water body due to a discharge of waste heat from a thermal-electrical plant is a function of the hydrodynamic variables of the discharge and the receiving water body. The temperature distribution can be described in terms of a surface jet discharging at some initial angle to the ambient flow and being deflected downstream by the momentum of the ambient velocity. It is assumed that in the vicinity of the surface jet, heat loss to the atmosphere is negligible. It is concluded that the application of the two dimensional surface jet model is dependent on the velocity ratio and the initial angle of discharge, and the value of the initial Richardson number, as low as 0.22. Both laboratory and field data are used for verification of the model which has been developed. Laboratory data is used to evaluate the two needed cooefficients, a drag coefficient and an entrainment coefficient, as well as the length of the zone of flow establishment and the angle at the end of that zone. The drag coefficient and characteristics of the establishment zone are found to be functions of the velocity ratio (ambient velocity/jet velocity), while the entrainment coefficient is primarily a function of geometry.

Book Gas Transfer at Water Surfaces

Download or read book Gas Transfer at Water Surfaces written by W. Brutsaert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transfer across the surface of environmental waters is of interest as an important phase in the geophysical and natural biochemical cycles of numer ous substances; indeed it governs the transition, one way or the other, be tween the dissolved state in the water and the gaseous state in the atmo sphere. Especially with increasing population and industrialization, gas transfer at water surfaces has become a critical factor in the understanding of the various pathways of wastes in the environment and of their engineering management. This interfacial mass transfer is, by its very nature, highly complex. The air and the water are usually in turbulent motion, and the interface be tween them is irregular, and disturbed by waves, sometimes accompanied by breaking, spray and bubble formation. Thus the transfer involves a wide variety of physical phenomena occurring over a wide range of scales. As a consequence, scientists and engineers from diverse disciplines and problem areas, have approached the problem, often with greatly differing analytical and experimental techniques and methodologies.

Book Heat Dispersion in Physical Estuarine Models

Download or read book Heat Dispersion in Physical Estuarine Models written by Victor L. Zitta and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prototype heat exchange mechanisms and scaling laws for the reproduction of thermal phenomena in hydraulic models are presented for each stage of the dispersion process. These stages are: Turbulent or momentum entrainment at the efflux jet; buoyant rise or fall of the heated plume; convective spread of the plume over the surface of the receiving waters; mass transport of the plume by ambient currents; diffusion and dispersion due to turbulence in the receiving waters; and surface heat exchange with the atmosphere.
