Book excerpt: The experimental study of magnetospheric processes consists of several disci plines or methods, developing in two general directions. The first, internal trend covers the progress in experimental techniques and methods and re search specific to this discipline. The other trend combines with other methods in a mutual attempt at understanding the boiling whirlpool of the disturbed magnetosphere. Investigations of auroral X-rays began after Van Allen's (1957) discovery of hard radiation in the upper atmosphere of the auroral zone, and are based on high latitude balloon observations. Scientific apparatus, payload equip ment, and particular questions of scientific ballooning are discussed in Chap ter 1. Chapter 2 concludes the internal trend of the subject by describing the problems of X-ray generation at the boundary of the atmosphere and propa gation downward to balloon altitudes. Auroral X-rays are closely related to most of the processes of the disturbed magnetosphere through energetic auroral electrons; precipitating into the at mosphere, the latter create bremsstrahlung photons able to penetrate to an at mospheric depth of 10- 20 g cm - 2. In quiet periods auroral electron flux ex ists only in embryo, as a hot plasma layer at the inner edge of the plasma sheet: in general it is a transient phenomenon caused by magnetospheric distur bances and carrying valuable information of the magnetospheric dynamics.

This model, and the resulting Auroral Atmospheric Radiance Code (AARC), describe the energy deposition in the thermosphere by primary auroral electrons and the ensuing effects. The latter include electron production and production of nonequilibrium concentrations of vibrationally and electronically excited states, by photochemical means, and by energy transfer. Relaxation of the states by collisions and radiation is described, and the transmission of the infrared radiation emitted from these states is treated. Currently, the model considers four radiators: the nitric oxide vibrational fundamental and first overtone at 2.8 and 5.3 micro the NO+ fundamental at 4.3 mirco, and the CO2 asymmetric- stretch (NU -3 mode) emission at 4.3 micro. The prompt optically optically thin emitters (NO and NO+) are treated in terms of stored, precalculated tables of efficiencies (photons per ion-pair).

Book excerpt: Over the past two decades auroral science has developed from a somewhat mysterious and imprecise specialty into a discipline central in the study of the ionosphere and magnetosphere. The investigation of aurora unites scientists with very different backgrounds and interests so that it is difficult to write a self-contained account of the field in a book of reasonable length. In this work I have attempted to include those aspects of theory which I have found valuable in predicting the effects on the atmosphere of auroral particle precipitation. In addition I have attempted to describe the techniques of observation with particular emphasis on optical methods which have been useful. While the aeronomy of aurora has been regarded as central, the mechanisms by which particles are accelerated and precipitated into the atmosphere is of no less interest. This aspect of the subject has however been treated in a briefer fashion since it is a part of the immense and rapidly developing field of magnetospheric science. Generally I have attempted to provide a coherent introduction to auroral science with an emphasis on relatively simple physical interpretations and models. References are given to enable the reader to find more extensive or rigorous discussions of particular topics. A fairly complete, quantitative atlas of the auroral spectrum is included.
