Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is now the third edition of a well established and highly successful undergraduate text. The content of the second edition has been reworked and added to where necessary, and completely new material has also been included. There are new sections on amorphous solids and liquid crystals, and completely new chapters on colloids and polymers. Using unsophisticated mathematics and simple models, Professor Tabor leads the reader skilfully and systematically from the basic physics of interatomic and intermolecular forces, temperature, heat and thermodynamics, to a coherent understanding of the bulk properties of gases, liquids and solids. The introductory material on intermolecular forces and on heat and thermodynamics is followed by several chapters dealing with the properties of ideal and real gases, both at an elementary and at a more sophisticated level. The mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of solids are considered next, before an examination of the liquid state. The author continues with chapters on colloids and polymers, and ends with a discussion of the dielectric and magnetic properties of matter in terms of simple atomic models. The abiding theme is that all these macroscopic material properties can be understood as resulting from the competition between thermal energy and intermolecular or interatomic forces. This is a lucid textbook which will continue to provide students of physics and chemistry with a comprehensive and integrated view of the properties of matter in all its many fascinating forms.

Book Diffusion in Solids and Liquids V

Download or read book Diffusion in Solids and Liquids V written by Andreas Öchsner and published by Trans Tech Publications Ltd. This book was released on 2010-04-13 with total page 1600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current water-treatment technologies require considerable energy consumption. Thus, closely linked to the problem of water shortage is the impending energy crisis. Therefore, intensive research is being aimed at developing water purification processes that are based upon using renewable energy, such as solar energy, rather than energy generated using fossil fuels. There has been an accumulation of reports on the development of photocatalysts, which enable water purification using solar energy as the only driving force. Such photocatalysts, based upon oxide semiconductors, permit the conversion of solar energy into the chemical energy that is required for the oxidation of toxic organic compounds in water. The most promising photocatalyst is titanium dioxide, TiO2, and its solid solutions. The research on TiO2 photocatalysis is multidisciplinary, and progress in this area requires the application of concepts of catalysis and photocatalysis as well as concepts of solid-state chemistry.

Book The Diffusion of Gases Through Liquids and Allied Experiments Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Diffusion of Gases Through Liquids and Allied Experiments Classic Reprint written by Carl Barus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diffusion of Gases Through Liquids and Allied Experiments The experiments in Chapter I, made during a period of eleven years, with an ordinary glass balloon - shaped Cartesian diver with a small aperture, culminated in a plausible value of the diffusion coefficient (i. E., grams of gas or standard volume of gas transpiring per second across an orthogonal square centimeter, in case of a unit pressure gradient) of the imprisoned air through water, together with suggestive relations of the mean viscosity of the imaginary medium within the molecular pores of the liquid through which a single molecule of the gas virtually transpires. The investigation was therefore taken up on a more extended scale, for different pairs of gases. In Chapter II the diver is modified in form and the endeavor is made to obtain equal areas in the section of the cylindrical swimmer and the annular space without, in order to conform more closely to the equation of diffusion. The theory of the phenomenon and the errors involved are discussed. It appears that. Even for mixed gases, the volumes diffusing (if not the masses) are fully determinable. The accuracy essentially depends on the measure ment of absolute temperature and of barometric pressure and should there fore be of an order below I 27 30 per C. Or per centimeter of mercury. As the masses of gas contained are as a rule much less than 10 - 2 gram, even in case of air, the weight less than gram is determinable, showing the remarkable sensitiveness of the method. Moreover, in the region of constant temperature, the limit of sensitiveness is immensely greater. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
