Book Sociology of the Kibbutz

Download or read book Sociology of the Kibbutz written by Ernest Krausz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of the publication series of the Israeli Sociological Society, whose object is to identify and clarify the major themes that occupy social research in Israel today. Studies of Israeli Society gathers together the best of Israeli social science investigation, which was previously scattered in a large variety of international jour-nals. Each book in the series is in-troduced by integrative essays. The contents of volume two focus on the sociology of a unique Israeli social institution—the kibbutz. Kib-butz society constitutes an impor-tant laboratory for the investigation of a variety of problems that have been of perennial concern to the social sciences. Topics in this volume include relevant contem-porary issues such as the dynamics of social stratification in a "classless" society, the function and status of the family in a revolutionary society, relations between generations, industrializa-tion in advanced rural communities, and collective economies versus the outside world. The questions of the concept and development of the kib-butz, social differentiation and socialization, and work and produc-tion within the kibbutz possess a significance far beyond their im-mediate social context. Does the kibbutz offer a model for an alter-native, communal lifestyle for the modern world? How has the kibbutz changed over the past decadeswithin the context of a rapidly modernizing Israeli society? Emphasizing the "nonfailure" of the kibbutz experiment and con-trasting it with many socialist, cooperative, and communal ex-periments that clearly did fail, Martin Buber, in his analysis, attributes this success to the kib-but/'s undogmatic character, its ability to adapt structures and in-stitutions to changing conditions, while preserving its essential values and ideals. This volume presents an excellent review of the social research under-taken on the kibbutz in the past decades, and provides an introduc-tion to the growing scientific literature on the kibbutz. Book The Dutch Collective Settlements Act and Private International Law

Download or read book The Dutch Collective Settlements Act and Private International Law written by Hélène van Lith and published by Maklu. This book was released on 2011 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the relationship between private international law and collective settlements concluded for the benefit of foreign-interested parties under the 2005 Dutch Collective Settlements Act, or WCAM. It examines aspects of international jurisdiction, cross-border notification, representation of foreign-interested parties, international recognition, and applicable law. The principal object of this study is to assess the suitability of existing private international law instruments at the national, European, and international levels, for the application of WCAM in transnational mass damage cases. The WCAM provides for collective redress in mass damages, on the basis of a settlement agreement concluded between one or more representative organizations and one or more allegedly liable parties, for the benefit of a group of affected persons to whom damage was allegedly caused. When a WCAM collective settlement is concluded by representative organizations for the benefit of foreign interested parties, various aspects of private international law come into play. These include aspects of international jurisdiction, cross-border notification, recognition, applicable law, and representation of foreign interested parties. The book analyzes all of these matters, but focuses on the applicability of WCAM settlements to transnational mass damage cases involving interested parties domiciled outside the Netherlands. It includes comparative observations in relation to jurisdictions, such as the US and Canada, that are familiar with collective or group actions based on an opt-out mechanism like the WCAM procedure.

Book Nation Building and Community in Israel

Download or read book Nation Building and Community in Israel written by Dorothy Willner and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author approaches the intricate process of nation-building in Israel through an examination of transformations which took place within a major development sector, rural land settlement, during Israel's first decade of statehood. Based on four years of observation in Israel, the study analyzes the ways in which this state worked out the urgent problems that confront a new nation, and demonstrates in vivid ethnographic detail how the policies thus formed made themselves felt in particular communities. The result is a clear picture of the interaction of national planning and the realities of village life in post-statehood Israel, and an original contribution to the anthropology of complex societies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of essays draws together research on different types of collective actions: group actions, representative actions, test case procedures, derivative actions and class actions. The main focus is on how these actions can enhance access to justice and on how to balance the interests of private actors in protecting their rights with the interests of society as a whole. Rather than focusing on collective actions only as a procedural device per se, the contributors to this book also examine how these mechanisms relate to their broader social context. Bringing together a broad range of scholarship from the areas of competition, consumer, environmental, company and securities law, the book includes contributions from Asian, European and North American scholars and therefore expands the scope of the traditional European and/or American debate.
