Book Improving the Current Understanding of the Evolution and Vertical Processes of Tropospheric Ozone Using a Ground Based Differential Absorption Lidar

Download or read book Improving the Current Understanding of the Evolution and Vertical Processes of Tropospheric Ozone Using a Ground Based Differential Absorption Lidar written by John Thomas Sullivan and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although characterizing the interactions of ozone throughout the entire troposphere are important for health and climate processes, there is a lack of routine measurements of vertical profiles within the United States. Current atmospheric satellite instruments cannot peer through the optically thick stratospheric ozone layer to remotely sense boundary layer tropospheric ozone. In order to monitor this lower ozone more effectively, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Goddard Space Flight Center TROPospheric OZone DIfferential Absorption Lidar (GSFC TROPOZ DIAL) has been developed and validated within the Tropospheric Ozone Lidar Network (TOLNet).

Book Instrument Development for Atmospheric Research and Monitoring

Download or read book Instrument Development for Atmospheric Research and Monitoring written by Jens Bösenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jens Bosenberg Max-Planck-Institut fur Meteorologie, Bundesstr. 55, D-20146 Hamburg, Germany TESLAS, which stands for Tropospheric Environmental Studies by Laser Sounding, was formed in November 1987 as a subproject of EUROTRAC to enhance the measurement capabilities for vertical profiling of ozone in the troposphere by means of laser remote sensing. For studies of several atmospheric processes related to the formation and redistribution of photo-oxidants there was a clear need for measuring extended time series with appropriate vertical and temporal resolution. These could not be obtained by conventional in situ techniques, at least not with affordable effort, so remote sensing appeared to be the best way to obtain the required information. At the beginning of the subproject, some Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) systems for measuring the vertical distribution of ozone already existed, but their use was restricted to very few laboratories and very few measurement campaigns, since the instruments were highly complex, rather unreliable, and required extensive efforts for maintenance and operation by skilled scientists. In addition, the accuracy of these measurements under a variety of meteorological conditions was not really well established. The main tasks within TESLAS therefore were to develop fully the DIAL-methodology for remote sensing of tropospheric ozone, and to develop instruments which are accurate, reliable, easy to operate, and suitable for field deployment or airborne operation.

Book Evaluation of Upper Atmospheric Ozone Data Provided by a Differential absorption Lidar

Download or read book Evaluation of Upper Atmospheric Ozone Data Provided by a Differential absorption Lidar written by Kimberly Kubera and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ground-level ozone is an environmental and public health issue. Daily ozone forecasts are made to allow people to take precautions to protect their health. For this study, a prototype laser that measures ozone concentrations vertically throughout the atmospheric boundary layer was evaluated as tool for ozone forecasting. To examine this data, three analyses were performed. First, it was determined if stratification, and thus residual layers, could be seen. This was conducted, in part, by examining hourly mixing heights overlaid onto color-coded NEXLASER charts. Each NEXLASER chart shows the horizontal and spatial distribution of the measured ozone concentrations during a twenty-four hour period. In the second analysis, the correlation value between the early morning upper-tropospheric ozone and the maximum 8-hour average surface ozone concentrations was determined. For the third analysis, a case study on two select groups of days was conducted. This study suggested that NEXLASER can be used to detect the presence of residual layers and can be used as an aid in predicting peak daily 8-hour average ground-level ozone concentrations. Specifically, days on which a morning ozone reservoir layer is most prominent have the most potential to lead to high surface ozone concentrations later in the day. While more research should be conducted, this study shows how this data could be useful in explaining ozone events, and thus be an aid to ozone forecasters.

Book An Ozone Differential Absorption Lidar DIAL Receiver System for Use on Unpiloted Atmospheric Vehicles

Download or read book An Ozone Differential Absorption Lidar DIAL Receiver System for Use on Unpiloted Atmospheric Vehicles written by Soenke Goldschmidt and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of global atmosphere ozone concentrations call for flexible lidar systems that can be operated from an unpiloted vehicle (UAV) to reduce the cost of measurement missions. A lidar receiver system consisting of a fiber-optic-coupled telescope has been designed and tested for this purpose. The system weight is 13 kg and its volume of 0.06 m[cubed] would fit into the payload compartment of a Perseus B UAV. The optical efficiency of the telescope is 37 percent at 288 nm and 64 percent at 300 nm. Atmospheric measurements with a DIAL laser system have been performed, and the measured ozone density has matched the data from ozonesondes to an altitude of 7 km.

Book Multiple scattering Effect on Ozone Retrieval from Space based Differential Absorption Lidar Measurements

Download or read book Multiple scattering Effect on Ozone Retrieval from Space based Differential Absorption Lidar Measurements written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the effect of multiple scattering on the accuracy of ozone measurement with a spaceborne ozone differential absorption lidar (DIAL) system. Based on standard lidar equations and various models & simulations, single- & multiple-scattering lidar signals are calculated for a DIAL system having an on & off wavelength pair at 305 & 315 nanometres. The effect of multiple scattering on stratospheric & tropospheric ozone retrieval is examined under conditions of background stratospheric aerosol. Under low-visibility conditions in the planetary boundary layer, the presence of multiple scattering causes an overestimation in maritime aerosol and an underestimation in urban & rural aerosol. This effect is studied in three cirrus models. The effect of aerosol & Rayleigh extinction on ozone retrieval is also discussed.
