Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts estimate that nearly 60 percent of all U.S. pregnancies--and 81 percent of pregnancies among adolescents--are unintended. Yet the topic of preventing these unintended pregnancies has long been treated gingerly because of personal sensitivities and public controversies, especially the angry debate over abortion. Additionally, child welfare advocates long have overlooked the connection between pregnancy planning and the improved well-being of families and communities that results when children are wanted. Now, current issues--health care and welfare reform, and the new international focus on population--are drawing attention to the consequences of unintended pregnancy. In this climate The Best Intentions offers a timely exploration of family planning issues from a distinguished panel of experts. This committee sheds much-needed light on the questions and controversies surrounding unintended pregnancy. The book offers specific recommendations to put the United States on par with other developed nations in terms of contraceptive attitudes and policies, and it considers the effectiveness of over 20 pregnancy prevention programs. The Best Intentions explores problematic definitions--"unintended" versus "unwanted" versus "mistimed"--and presents data on pregnancy rates and trends. The book also summarizes the health and social consequences of unintended pregnancies, for both men and women, and for the children they bear. Why does unintended pregnancy occur? In discussions of "reasons behind the rates," the book examines Americans' ambivalence about sexuality and the many other social, cultural, religious, and economic factors that affect our approach to contraception. The committee explores the complicated web of peer pressure, life aspirations, and notions of romance that shape an individual's decisions about sex, contraception, and pregnancy. And the book looks at such practical issues as the attitudes of doctors toward birth control and the place of contraception in both health insurance and "managed care." The Best Intentions offers frank discussion, synthesis of data, and policy recommendations on one of today's most sensitive social topics. This book will be important to policymakers, health and social service personnel, foundation executives, opinion leaders, researchers, and concerned individuals. May

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first textbook dedicated to critically examining gender and sex in study designs, methods, and analysis in health research. In order to produce ethical, accurate, and effective research findings it is vital to integrate both sex (biological characteristics) and gender (socially constructed factors) into any health study. This book draws attention to some of the methodological complexities in this enterprise and offers ways to thoughtfully address these by drawing on empirical examples across a range of topics and disciplines. Designing and Conducting Gender, Sex, and Health Research is an invaluable resource for students undertaking research in health sciences, medicine, nursing, gender studies, women′s studies, epidemiology, health policy, psychology, and sociology. Book excerpt: More than 1 million teenage girls in the United States become pregnant each year; nearly half give birth. Why do these young people, who are hardly more than children themselves, become parents? This volume reviews in detail the trends in and consequences of teenage sexual behavior and offers thoughtful insights on the issues of sexual initiation, contraception, pregnancy, abortion, adoption, and the well-being of adolescent families. It provides a systematic assessment of the impact of various programmatic approaches, both preventive and ameliorative, in light of the growing scientific understanding of the topic.

Book Influences on Contraceptive Use Among College Women

Download or read book Influences on Contraceptive Use Among College Women written by Valerie Gwen Bader and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: An unintended pregnancy (UIP) occurs before an ideal time or is completely unwanted. In 2011, the rate of UIP in the United States was 49% of all pregnancies. Unintended pregnancies are expensive to society and result in poorer health outcomes for the woman and the infant. Women in the following groups have the highest rates of UIP: aged 20-24; unmarried and co-habitating; income below the poverty level; educational level less than a high school diploma; and, Black or Latina women. Contraceptive use prevents UIP, but many women do not use contraception, especially the highly effective long-acting reversible forms of contraception. Purposes: This descriptive, cross-sectional study examined the relationship between background factors, attitudes, perceived norms, and self-efficacy and the intent to use contraception. Secondly, this study examined the relationship between background factors, intent to use contraception, environmental factors, competency, and reported use of contraception. Finally, this study aimed to establish the validity and reliability of the survey instrument, Influences on Birth Control Use (IBCU). Methods: Participants were a convenience sample of 270 women ages 18-24 attending a large public university or community college in the Midwest. Participants completed a paper survey. The integrated behavioral iv model provided a framework for factors associated with intent to use contraception and reported contraception use. Results: IBCU was found to have reliable sub-scales, especially for attitude and self-efficacy toward contraceptive use. For each one point increase in the attitude scale score, the odds that a participant did not intend to use contraception declined. If a participant reported a rural childhood, they were more likely to report they did not intend to use contraception. If a participant intended to use contraception, they were 15 times more likely to report contraceptive use, and if a participant had health insurance that paid for contraception, they were six times more likely to report contraceptive use. Conclusions: Understanding social differences in rural areas allows providers to offer sensitive reproductive health care to women from those areas. Decreasing the cost of contraception will increase the number of women who use contraception. Men should be included in research on contraception in future.

Book Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors Related to Emergency Contraception Among College Students

Download or read book Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors Related to Emergency Contraception Among College Students written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 50% of pregnancies in the United States are unplanned. Though recent regulations have expanded access to EC, the numerous policy changes, lack of knowledge, and unreliable sources of information regarding EC prevent women from utilizing the benefits that EC can offer. The purpose of this study was to assess students’ knowledge and attitudes about emergency contraception (EC) and to determine if there is a relationship between sexual behaviors and the use of EC. Two hundred and twelve undergraduate students from James Madison University completed an anonymous 29-question survey regarding EC. Results indicated that students were reasonably knowledgeable regarding the purpose and use of EC, with the majority of respondents answering eight out of ten questions correctly. A chi-square analysis was conducted to evaluate the association between gender and attitudes towards EC. Data showed a significant relationship between gender and attitude about (1) whether the advanced provision of EC contributes to increased risky sexual behavior and (2) whether the use of EC is the females decision only. Regarding types of risky sexual behaviors, four behaviors were evaluated: sex under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, age of first sexual intercourse, number of sexual partners within the past year, and frequency of use of protection with sexual partner. Overall, of those respondents who were sexually active, majority engaged in few risky sexual behaviors and appeared to participate in safe sexual practices (having few sexual partners and frequent use of protection).

Book How Do Chinese College Students Seek Information to Prevent Unwanted Pregnancy A Study of Online Information Seeking for Contraception

Download or read book How Do Chinese College Students Seek Information to Prevent Unwanted Pregnancy A Study of Online Information Seeking for Contraception written by Weiwei Jiang and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Online information seeking and online health information seeking are common practices today with the availability and prevalent use of the Internet and digital devices. People who are seeking health information online not only benefit from gaining or improving knowledge about health topics, diseases, treatments, and getting social support, they may also benefit from making well-informed and deliberate health decisions. Many studies showed that young people have great interest in online health information seeking, including sexual health knowledge and contraceptive methods. What prompts them to seek information to prevent unwanted pregnancy, and what influences their device preference for obtaining the information, is unknown. This study applied Planned Risk Information Seeking Model (PRISM), proposed by Kahlor (2010), to investigate Chinese young people's risk perception of and affective response to unwanted pregnancy and how unwanted pregnancy as a health hazard, together with other cognitive and motivational factors, predict people's information seeking intention of contraception. To better understand people's online information seeking, the proposed research model of this study expanded PRISM to further explore people's using intention of digital devices (computers/laptops and smartphones) as information seeking channels and their device preference when they intend to seek contraceptive information. The most important finding in this study is that Chinese college students prefer using a smartphone when they have the intention to seek contraceptive information on the Internet, and when both computers/laptops and smartphones are accessible digital devices to them. At the same time, in general Chinese college students rate computers as their preferred devices to seek contraceptive information. Perceived online information seeking control plays crucial roles in mediating information seeking attitude and in predicting people's online contraceptive information seeking intention, and it directly affects people's channel beliefs. The mediating effect impact of perceived seeking control on information seeking intention on devices is also highlighted as the most prominent indirect effect. This study also shows that perceived vulnerability to unwanted pregnancy rather than perceived severity of unwanted pregnancy is a significant predictor of people's contraceptive information seeking on the Internet. Hence it is more important to emphasize the likelihood of getting pregnant in sex education campaigns targeting young people in order to motivate their needs to seek information and learn more about contraception. In addition, although the study sample included both male and female college students, there were no significant differences in their information seeking attitudes and intentions despite male students reporting feeling higher information seeking control and vulnerability than female students on these topics. Implications of the findings for sex education campaigns related to contraceptives and optimizing information online for various devices are discussed.
