Book Understanding Expository Text

Download or read book Understanding Expository Text written by Bruce K. Britton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985, the various chapters in this volume give examples of research on all three aspects of text understanding – namely, structure, world knowledge and process. More than this, however, the research described represents a shift in emphasis from studying stories, which dominated the field in the late 1970s, to studying expository text. This focus on stories was probably due to the essential first step in any science of examining the simplest materials possible. However, the editors thought that it was time to shift the research focus from stories to expository text and this volume is their attempt to provide this transition.

Book Industrial Problem Solving Simplified

Download or read book Industrial Problem Solving Simplified written by Ralph R. Pawlak and published by Apress. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial Problem Solving Simplified provides a roadmap for solving manufacturing problems. Containing numerous examples of actual problems and their solutions in various industrial environments, it is for novice as well as experienced manufacturing owners, managers, quality representatives, consultants, trainers, and procurement professionals. Author Ralph Pawlak’s roadmap is a proven system that has been used to eliminate major manufacturing problems in electronics, casting, blow molding, and assembly operations. What’s more, it has been used effectively in the manufacture of toys, juvenile products, chemicals, automotive engines, and innumerable components of many manufacturing facilities—and in the U.S., Canada, China, and Europe. The book’s insights into problem causes and the methods to solve them once and for all are applicable to most problems in most industries. Pawlak, with decades of experience as manager of manufacturing, quality, and plant engineering for General Motors, Fisher Price, Vibratech, and others, offers tools to solve problems and shows how to use them. You’ll learn how to use tools like quality check sheets, flow diagrams, concept sheets, duo diagrams, variation plots, sketches, sum-of-extremes tests, good versus bad comparisons, fractionals with interactions, and many-level checks. What’s more, these are tools anyone can put to good use today. No special knowledge of statistics, or advanced math or engineering, is required. If you can add, subtract, multiply, and divide—and use your eyes and ears—you can learn to solve industrial problems like a pro. This book will help you: 1. Clarify the conditions that cause problems 2. Define the cause of problems 3. Generate clues as to the causes of problems and their solutions 4. Collect accurate and relevant data 5. Use specific tools to solve problems effectively 6. Establish consistent work processes to ensure problems do not return Industrial Problem Solving Simplified will empower you and your people not just to solve manufacturing problems but optimize processes, improve productivity, and save money. With the plans, examples, and worksheets in this book, you will become a proficient problem solver.

Book Multiple Perspectives on Problem Solving and Learning in the Digital Age

Download or read book Multiple Perspectives on Problem Solving and Learning in the Digital Age written by Dirk Ifenthaler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-13 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume with selected expanded papers from CELDA (Cognition and Exploratory Learning in the Digital Age) 2009 (http://www.celda-conf.org/) addresses the main issues concerned with problem solving, evolving learning processes, innovative pedagogies, and technology-based educational applications in the digital age. There have been advances in both cognitive psychology and computing that have affected the educational arena. The convergence of these two disciplines is increasing at a fast pace and affecting academia and professional practice in many ways. Paradigms such as just-in-time learning, constructivism, student-centered learning and collaborative approaches have emerged and are being supported by technological advancements such as simulations, virtual reality and multi-agents systems. These developments have created both opportunities and areas of serious concerns. This volume aims to cover both technological as well as pedagogical issues related to these developments.

Book Complex Problem Solving Beyond the Psychometric Approach

Download or read book Complex Problem Solving Beyond the Psychometric Approach written by Wolfgang Schoppek and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complex problem solving (CPS) and related topics such as dynamic decision-making (DDM) and complex dynamic control (CDC) represent multifaceted psychological phenomena. In abroad sense, CPS encompasses learning, decision-making, and acting in complex and dynamic situations. Moreover, solutions to problems that people face in such situations are often generated in teams or groups. This adds another layer of complexity to the situation itself because of the emerging issues that arise from the social dynamics of group interactions. This framing of CPS means that it is not a single construct that can be measured by using a particular type of CPS task (e.g. minimal complex system tests), which is a view taken by the psychometric community. The proposed approach taken here is that because CPS is multifaceted, multiple approaches need to be taken to fully capture and understand what it is and how the different cognitive processes associated with it complement each other. Thus, this Research Topic is aimed at showcasing the latest work in the fields of CPS, as well as DDM and CDC that takes a holist approach to investigating and theorizing about these abilities. The collection of articles encompasses conceptual approaches as well as experimental and correlational studies involving established or new tools to examine CPS, DDM and CDC. This work contributes to answering questions about what strategies and what general knowledge can be transferred from one type of complex and dynamic situation to another, what learning conditions result in transferable knowledge and skills, and how these features can be trained.

Book The Psychology of Problem Solving

Download or read book The Psychology of Problem Solving written by Janet E. Davidson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-06-09 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problems are a central part of human life. The Psychology of Problem Solving organizes in one volume much of what psychologists know about problem solving and the factors that contribute to its success or failure. There are chapters by leading experts in this field, including Miriam Bassok, Randall Engle, Anders Ericsson, Arthur Graesser, Keith Stanovich, Norbert Schwarz, and Barry Zimmerman, among others. The Psychology of Problem Solving is divided into four parts. Following an introduction that reviews the nature of problems and the history and methods of the field, Part II focuses on individual differences in, and the influence of, the abilities and skills that humans bring to problem situations. Part III examines motivational and emotional states and cognitive strategies that influence problem solving performance, while Part IV summarizes and integrates the various views of problem solving proposed in the preceding chapters.
