It was written to highlight the socially constructed character and social effects of this discourse and its different variants and expressions, and thus offer perspectives for evolution and change. The underlying conviction is that discourses, and thus the beliefs and knowledge that they contain, are historically specific phenomena that are constructed in communities in particular times and places. In other words, knowledge is not as objective as it sometimes pretends to be: it is affected by gender, class, ethno-cultural origin, and the political affiliations of its producers. This book has been written for an international audience of academics, politicians, journalists, policymakers, and members of social movements engaged in the development of truly diverse societies and interested in the role of politics in attaining such an objective. Ineke van der Valk is researcher at the Department of Discourse Studies, Faculty of Humanities, University of Amsterdam. Prior to researching, she worked as a community organizer with the migrant movement, the anti-racist movement, and the human rights movement. She has published on the history of the migrant movement in the Netherlands, human rights in Morocco, and the discourse on ethnic minorities in the Netherlands and France. She also works as a consultant and trainer in the field of diversity management.

Together, the essays highlight the Gothic inclination to represent all ailments as visibly monstrous, even those, such as mental illness, which were invisible. Paradoxically, the Other also becomes a pitiful figure, often evoking empathy. This exploration of illness and disability represents a strong addition to Gothic studies.

The core questions that form the backbone of the research are not only the expected inquiry into 'why men buy sex', but also into the sociological and psychological processes that men encounter in order to enter an assumed 'deviant' sexual behaviour as part of their everyday lives. These sociological processes of finding, negotiating and buying sexual services are complicated by the stigma directed towards men who buy sex. Exactly how do men behave with sex workers; what are their relationships like; what emotions are involved and can intimacy be bought? Questioning the dichotomy made between commercial and non-commercial relationships, the data suggests that intimacy and commerce are compatible. Managing secrecy, stigma and the consumption of intimacy takes this book into some of the more challenging theoretical areas of masculinity and emotional consumption in contemporary society. Drawing some parallels from the author's earlier book Sex Work: A Risky Business, the book offers insights into why engagement in commercial sex is prolific as sexual culture is transformed in late modernity.
