This book provides an extensive analysis of the work of Louis Massignon (1883-1962) on Muslim mysticism, based on previously unpublished historical and biographical elements. It highlights the importance for Islamic Studies of certain discoveries made by the Islamicist concerning the formative period of Sufism. More than that, this book probes Massignon’s view of mystical vocations in Islam and examines, in the light of recent work, his vision of "holiness" and the figure of al-Ḥallāj (d. 309/922). This work opens, more broadly, the question of the posture of the researcher in the study of religion and the precautions to be adopted so that their subjectivity does not reconstruct reality, but illuminates and reveals it.

La question est-elle vraiment de savoir si Dieu existe ou non, de croire en lui ou pas ? « C’est là une question d’homme », note Maurice Bellet dans son Minuscule traité acide de spiritualité, « Dieu ne se la pose jamais. » L’important n’est-il pas de demeurer dans l’intelligence du coeur et la compassion, en se faisant proche de ceux et celles avec qui nous vivons ? Dieu est discret et secret, comme l’amour et la vie. Nous avons toujours la tentation de lui donner les attributs de l’idole. Il nous échappe sans cesse au foyer de notre conscience, mais son élan de vie crée du sens. Comme tout dictionnaire, nul besoin de le lire de la première à la dernière page. Le lecteur peut se laisser guider au hasard de la Providence, chaque mot en appelant un autre, jusqu’au silence où Dieu se dit. »

This involvement is reflected in the hundreds of publications which have flowed from his pen. Lukken's extensive writings offer not only an exciting reflection on the challenges (such as secularization and the decrease in church-going) confronting church and believers, but also on the problems they have faced in celebrating their faith in recent decades. Moreover, his work represents a model for methodological renewal. The key concepts in his theological approach and his evaluation are 'anthropology' and 'semiotics'. These two aspects have left their marks on the organisation of this book which is a selective compilation drawn from his earlier publications. This collection consists of nineteen studies which have lost nothing of their topicality and most of which are now being translated into English, French or German for the first time. By crossing the frontier of language in such a way the editors wish not only to honour a leading specialist in liturgy but also to contribute to academic research into liturgy throughout the world. Gerard Lukken (1933) studied at the Diocesan Seminary in Haaren (Noord-Brabant), the Pontificia Universita in Rome, and the Institut Superieur de Liturgie in Paris. He was professor of liturgy and sacramental theology (from 1967) and director of the Liturgical Institute (from 1992) at the Theological Faculty of Tilburg until his retirement in 1994.
