Book Dietary Factors and Microbial Profiles Related to Caries in Adults

Download or read book Dietary Factors and Microbial Profiles Related to Caries in Adults written by Valerie Elaine Cooper and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Dietary and microbial factors were evaluated in 21 healthy subjects and 21 subjects with severe dental caries. An interview-based 24-hour multiple-pass recall questionnaire was used to record dietary information. Supragingival plaque was collected from healthy teeth and carious lesions. The bacteria were identified and quantified using an unbiased genetic technique. Analysis of the dietary questionnaire revealed that the exposure time of carbohydrates on the teeth was significantly different between the groups; exposure time also correlated with caries increment. There were no significant differences between percent RDI calories, total carbohydrates, or body mass index. Analysis of the bacterial profiles in plaque showed that the most significantly disease-associated bacteria are Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus species, and Veillonella species. The significantly health-associated species are Streptococcus mitis, infantis, pneumoniae, and oralis. This study shows that eating behavior may be the most significant contributor to dental caries, which involves many different species.

Book Root Caries From Prevalence to Therapy

Download or read book Root Caries From Prevalence to Therapy written by M. Rocha de Olivera Carrilho and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Case reports and clinical trials conducted in various countries show, more and more frequently, a positive correlation between the presence of original teeth and prevalence of root caries in older age. Because this is a global trend, it is likely that the predicted increase in the worldwide elderly population may soon cause a significant increase in the number of people requiring effective means of preventing and treating root surface caries. In response to this development, a team of outstanding contributors has reviewed the most important aspects of root caries. This new volume presents their findings along with discussions of how to deal with this health issue that progressively affects the oral health balance. The chapters in this book are divided in four core parts: Epidemiology, Biological Determinants, Lesion Assessment and Features and Preventive and Operative Therapies. The collection of state-of-the-art articles provides a broad overview and will serve as a reference for clinicians as well as scientists and, hopefully, will encourage new research.

Book The Impact of Nutrition and Diet on Oral Health

Download or read book The Impact of Nutrition and Diet on Oral Health written by F.V. Zohoori and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most oral diseases are preventable, yet they remain the most globally common noncommunicable disorders, affecting people throughout their lifetime. Lifestyle, including diet and food choice, is central to the occurrence of oral disease. Nutrition and diet can impact the development and status of the oral cavity as well as the progression of illness. Also, poor oral health can influence the ability to eat and, consequently, to maintain an adequate diet and nutrient balance. This book, consisting of 14 chapters, provides current information on the impact of nutrients (macro- and micro-elements and vitamins) and diet on oral health and vice versa (i.e., the impact of oral health on diet/nutrition). It also reviews possible oral health effects of probiotics as well as relationships between genotype and diet, which are important for determining oral disease risk. This book is a helpful resource for under- and postgraduate students. It will also be useful to dentists and nutritionists/dietitians as they integrate nutrition education into medical practice.

Download or read book Cariology for the Nineties written by William H. Bowen and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dental caries, despite significant reductions in some populations, continues to be a major public health problem, and is the most prevalentdisease affecting humans. However, even fundamental aspects of thepathogenesis of caries remain uncertain, calling for continuing scientific enquiry and the application of sophisticated techniques, from epidemiology to molecular biology. Although recent changes in the pattern of dental caries are identifiable, available data does not reveal whether, overall, caries is declining. The conference `Cariology in the Nineties', held at the University of Rochester in 1991, by focusing on the etiology, pathogenesis and prevention of dental caries, emphasised the need to co-ordinate research in monitoring populations worldwide, and to change the focus of research to reflect the changing epidemiology and patterns of dental disease. Contents: Keynote address; Epidemiolgy; Saliva; Teeth; Clinical studies; Microbiology/Plaque; Diet/Nutrition/Prevention. W.H. BOWEN is Professor and Chair, Department of Dental Research,University of Rochester. LAWRENCE A. TABAK is Professor of Dental Research and of Biochemistry, University of Rochester.

Book Diet Nutrition and Dentistry

Download or read book Diet Nutrition and Dentistry written by Patricia M. Randolph and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Dental practitioners should have a basic understanding of nutrition concepts and the ability to supply practical information to patients. Guidelines to aid in this process include information on the evaluation of nutritional status (nutrient values of foods, surveys, RDA's, etc.) protein functions in the body, enzyme and coenzyme metabolic regulators, energy sources and energy balance. Behavior modification in dental patients as a result of diet and nutrition counseling is the objective of the practical suggestions offered; counseling techniques are reviewed as is material on nutrient requirements for dental health, oral manifestations of nutritional status, and dietary influences on dental caries. The specific conditions discussed focus on nutrition for periodontal, pregnant, pedodontic and elderly patients, and nutritional of implications of disease, including cancer, infection, surgery, and systemic problems.

Book Dietary Factors Salivary Parameters and Dental Caries

Download or read book Dietary Factors Salivary Parameters and Dental Caries written by Efka Zabokova Bilbilova and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diet and oral microflora are connected to caries along with host factors such as salivary composition and flow. The only component of the food with potentially cariogenic effect is fermentable carbohydrat-μ sucrose. Sucrose is generally accepted as the most cariogenic dietary factor, and consumption of sucrose is associated with the frequency of dental caries in humans. Saliva is a biological environment, important for the physiology of the mouth. It achieves its mechanical functions of cleaning and protection through various physical and biochemical mechanisms. Bicarbonates, phosphates, and proteins have a buffer role in the saliva environment. Other compounds or enzymes in this group acting as prophylactic buffers are urea, salivary amylases, and fluorides.

Book Evidence Based Caries Prevention

Download or read book Evidence Based Caries Prevention written by Ece Eden and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to define the etiological factors in dental caries and to guide the clinician towards methods of caries prevention that are evidence based. The coverage includes discussion of the active role of the biofilm and the oral environment and emphasizes the multifactorial etiology of dental caries. The opening chapters describe the early detection and diagnosis of dental caries, highlight the value of caries risk assessment to the patient, and explain the dynamic process of the demineralization–remineralization cycle. Information is presented on the action of fluoride, and the evidence relating to the use and effectiveness of remineralization agents and biomimetic materials is reviewed. Additionally, the effects of antimicrobials such as chlorhexidine and ozone are summarized. Further chapters focus on dietary counseling (with information on sweeteners and probiotics), the effectiveness of sealants in caries prevention, and resin infiltration. The philosophy of prophylaxis and ways to improve patient compliance and achieve proper mechanical plaque removal are discussed. The book is concluded with a chapter discussing preventive actions in representative cases.

Download or read book Nutrition and Caries written by B.C.P. Jansen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years we have known that dental caries is one of the most common diseases of mankind. Only few people have sound teeth till the end of life. Formerly we thought that the only possibility to keep our teeth in good state was to go to the dentist regularly. Since we know how complicated our nutrition is we know too that we have to regard the composition of our food as a principal factor influencing the state of our teeth. The trace-elements e. g. play an important role. Studies with tracers during the last decades have shown that the minerals are metabolized very actively by living organisms. Thus research in our laboratory, together with Prof. SIZOO and Prof. OOLS, has demon strated that intravenously injected radio-active phosphorus has disap peared from the blood already half an hour after injection. Even the hard dental substance participates in this active metabolism.
