Book Obesity in America

Download or read book Obesity in America written by George A. Bray and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Most of the papers presented were prepared by the various conference task forces. A distinction is made between overweight and obesity; the former indicating an excess of body weight to height, the latter a surplus of fat. It is agreed that obesity is the result of a continued excessive consumption of food, but why such consumption occurs is not understood. The correlation of exercise and diet is discussed. Although skinfold thickness is considered the best measure of obesity, interpretation of the measurement is still a problem. The relationship between obesity and various body disorders needs further research. The dangers of obesity, including diseases associated with the condition, are discussed and further research is recommended. The various treatments for obesity have attendant risks which should be carefully considered. Control of obesity, which is largely the result of life style, will be most effective when people in both medical and nonmedical fields work together in a joint effort.

Book Modulators Mediators and Specifiers in Brain Function

Download or read book Modulators Mediators and Specifiers in Brain Function written by Y. H. Erlich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While neuroanatomy and neurophysiology were defining the unique features of the synapse as a site for cell to cell signaling in the late fifties, neurochemistry was establishing the identity and studying the biosynthetic pathways of monoamine neurotransmitters. Meanwhile, neuropsychiatry was keeping a vigilant eye on the outcome of this concerted effort with the untold hope that a genetic defect in neurotransmitter metabolism would ac count for the pathogenesis of certain psychiatric ill nesses. Thus, when neurochemists in the early sixties began to study the feasibility of measuring the metabolism of brain neurotransmitters in vivo, clinical biochemists eagerly adopted these methods to their needs and sought to verify whether inborn errors of transmitter biogenesis were a cause for at least certain forms of depression, mania and schizophrenia. Undoubtedly, it is still too early to evaluate the outcome of these studies. However, current opinion holds that gross inborn errors in transmitter metabolism do not anpear to be operative as a primary cause of psychia tric disorders. Though monoamine metabolism appears to be defective in certain groups of psychiatric disorders, the cause of these changes can at best be associated with changes in patterns of neuronal firing. It is generally believed that these persistent changes are determined by a number of unknown factors operative in various psychia tric illnesses. In the attempt to identify the molecular nature of these unknown factors, the focus of current research is directed toward transmitter receptors.

Book Enhancing the Regulatory Decision Making Approval Process for Direct Food Ingredient Technologies

Download or read book Enhancing the Regulatory Decision Making Approval Process for Direct Food Ingredient Technologies written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-04-29 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Institute of Medicine's (IOM's) Food Forum was established in 1993 to allow science and technology leaders in the food industry, top administrators in the federal government, representatives from consumer interest groups, and academicians to discuss and debate food and food safety issues openly and in a neutral setting. The Forum provides a mechanism for these diverse groups to identify possible approaches for addressing food and food safety problems and issues surrounding the often complex interactions among industry, academia, regulatory agencies, and consumers. On May 6-7, 1997, the Forum convened a workshop titled Enhancing the Regulatory Decision-Making Process for Direct Food Ingredient Technologies. Workshop speakers and participants discussed legal aspects of the direct food additive approval process, changes in science and technology, and opportunities for reform. Two background papers, which can be found in Appendix A and B, were shared with the participants prior to the workshop. The first paper provided a description and history of the legal framework of the food ingredient approval process and the second paper focused on changes in science and technology practices with emphasis placed on lessons learned from case studies. This document presents a summary of the workshop.

Book excerpt: Food Fight is set during a 1991 Congressional hearing that evaluated the USDA's development of the Food Pyramid, a document that angered various agribusiness groups and some nutrition experts. This Open Access Reacting Game can be used in food and nutrition general education science courses and introductory chemistry and biology courses. Food Fight has also been used in courses that explore graphic representations of data and in public policy courses because it deals with conflicts of interest in government policy and the role of lobbyists and the press in those debates.
