Book excerpt: Between 2008 and 2014, ETH Studio Basel, under the guidance of Roger Diener and Marcel Meili, has been investigating the process of urbanisation taking place outside cities. Territory - in the context of this investigation denotes both: the surroundings that a city subsumes into its own structure and the core city itself, which is the centre of this process of urbanisation, or "confiscation". Investigated were six regions on six continents: The Nile Valley with the dense corset of natural landscape surrounding a linear city; Rome-Adria, where territorial cells have formed within the territory, spawning an urban type of tremendous dynamism; Florida, presenting highly complex patterns of territorial organisation; Vietnam's Red River Delta, where recent reform exposed traditional settlement and cultivation of the delta to freer forces; Oman, where urbanisation of a territory essentially means reclaiming the desert with the immediate necessity to develop a system for water distribution; and Belo Horizonte, where natural conditions likewise play a major role in organising the territory as surface mining entails huge transformations of the natural terrain. The new book features two introductory essays on ETH Studio Basel's research approach and on terminology, concise illustrated reports on the six regions, and four concluding topical essays.

He worked in London with Erno Goldfinger and Denys Lasdun in 1960 64 under the strong and lasting influence also of the movements of Modernism and New Brutalism then prevailing in the theoretical discourse in British architecture. His own studio Ponis established in 1964 in Palau, on the Italian island of Sardinia, working since on private, public and urban planning commissions. In 1990 he was awarded the INARCH prize for the Village of "Stazzo Pulcheddu" in Palau. Ponis often refers to the natural conditions and the social history of Sardinia when talking about his work in architecture. Besides of nature and society, he has also extensively studied the "stazzo, " Sardinia s typical rural building type. This thorough knowledge of conditions, traditions and requirements are the foundation of an oeuvre of more than 300 residential buildings. Each of them deeply rooted in its environment and connected with the land and other dwellings by the "sentiero, " the path leading to and from the house. Ponis s houses are meant to be summer homes, their inert warmth reflecting the architect s fundamental optimism. They show a natural modesty and simplicity rather than their owner s wealth or status. They express the architect s great formal skills and sensitivity. They are inconceivable without the Sardinian landscape and history and the island seems to have been expecting just these particular buildings, merging naturally with nature. Writing, like drawing and talking together, supports their collaborative and creative work, providing as it does a tangible reference point for communication and in the search for shared objectives. Although each of the papers included in this volume was written by one of the architects, they acknowledge shared authorship of their content and objective. In the preparation of each paper, the observer acts as a friendly critic to the write, integral to the process and supportive of the exploration of personal and shared experience. Some of theses papers wrere written as a result of self-imposed discipline, others were prepared as lectures, to support their teaching practice, to highlight a particular theme or encourage a way of looking at something. Others were written as contributions towards symposia, conferences and publications, or in response to invitations to speak publicly about their work. In some cases, a lecture based on notes and images has been subsuquently developed for publication. This results in a rich mix in terms of contet, lenght, structure and character. The twenty papers are organised thematically and chronologically within each section, addressing reflections on their own position within architectural discourse, on the process of making buildings, on some of the ideas that recur in their work and on aspects of place.
