Book Theory and measurement of dielectric properties of alkali halide crystals at cryogenic temperatures

Download or read book Theory and measurement of dielectric properties of alkali halide crystals at cryogenic temperatures written by David Grissom and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Born expression, E = - alpha/r+ beta/rn, for the energy of interaction between two ions is used to derive a new expression for the ionic polarizability of the alkali halides. The new expression for the ionic polarizability, based upon dielectric constant measurements, gives values of the repulsive exponent n, in the Born energy relation, which agree well with values obtained from compressibility studies. The dielectric losses in a perfect crystal are examined in detail. It is assumed that there are three mechanisms which may contribute to the losses in a perfect crystal: radiation damping, quantum absorption, and collision broadening. Calculations show the losses due to radiation and quantum effects to be too small to measure. A new theory of collision broadening, as applied to dielectric losses, is offered. The thermal energy of the crystal lattice produces an rms ion displacement from the equilibrium position. Experimental dielectric loss measurements in the VHF-UHF range show the actual losses to be much larger than those calculated for perfect crystals. The observed losses in NaCl and KCl are shown to be of the same nature as Debye relaxation, which are associated with crystal defects. For NaCl, a loss peak near 300 Mc/sec has an activation energy of .0011 ev. and has a fractional defect density of approximately 5 x 10 to the minus 10th power.

Book Alkaline Chemistry and Applications

Download or read book Alkaline Chemistry and Applications written by Riadh Marzouki and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-03-16 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alkaline elements are present in large quantities and in different forms in the Earth’s layers. They are widely used in the manufacture of materials showing interesting physical properties that can be applied in several fields, including catalysis, biology, energy, and others. This book describes different methods of synthesis and treatment of certain alkaline materials and their applications in different fields. It discusses alkaline chemistry in catalysis, biology, polymers and composites, and crystallography.

Book Laser Techniques for Investigation of Defects in Semiconductors and Dielectrics

Download or read book Laser Techniques for Investigation of Defects in Semiconductors and Dielectrics written by A. A. Manenkov and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are given from investigations of impurity accumulations in pure silicon and germanium crystals as well as ionisation processes of impurity centres in alkaline-halide crystals activated by mercury-like ions. The photoexcitation mechanisms of non-equilibrium carriers in wide-band dielectrics are investigated together with photoexcitation mechanisms.

Book Phonon Anharmonicity and Microwave Absorption in Alkali Halide Crystals

Download or read book Phonon Anharmonicity and Microwave Absorption in Alkali Halide Crystals written by James Carl Owens and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general study of the absorption of far infrared and microwave radiation by alkali halide crystals having the NaCl structure was carried out. The existing theories of the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with anharmonic three-dimensional ionic crystal lattices are critically reviewed and serious shortcomings pointed out. A more complete quantum-mechanical perturbation theory of absorption by such crystal lattices is proposed, using the formalism of second quantization and the technique of diagrammatic evaluation of matrix elements. Measurements of the dielectric constant and loss tangent of LiF, NaCl, and KBr were made at frequencies of 9.8, 35.4, and 116 kMc between 25 and 750C., with some additional measurements at temperatures as low as -190C. The results of these measurements definitely establish the inadequacy of previous theories of absorption by ionic crystals, both classical and quantum-mechanical, in which only the lowest order anharmonic terms in the potential energy are considered, and corroborate the general features of the new theory.
