Book Salinity Sensitivity of Embryos of the Antarctic Sea Urchin Sterechinus Neumayeri

Download or read book Salinity Sensitivity of Embryos of the Antarctic Sea Urchin Sterechinus Neumayeri written by Dominique Alexandria Cowart and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Antarctic sea urchin, Sterechinus neumayeri, develops more slowly than its warm water counterparts, although the pattern of early development is the same as in other sea urchin species. There is available data on the effects of temperature on S. neumayeri embryos, however information about impacts of salinity on their development is not well documented. In this study, two and four parts per thousand decreases in standard salinity were tested to see if the developmental rate of S. neumayeri embryos would be further slowed by hyposmotic stress. During the austral summer of 2005, adult urchins were collected from McMurdo Sound and spawned at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. Immediately after fertilization, individual zygotes were placed in three separate salinity treatments within the wells of a 96-well microtiter plate modified to maintain constant temperatures. The salinity treatments were 34 (n=265), 32 (n=89) and 30 [per thousand] (n=198). Early cleavage stages were observed up until the formation of a morula, approximately 35-38 hours post fertilization (h PF) on average for S. neumayeri at -1.86 °C. For standard development (96 % viable zygotes), 47% of these embryos passed the morula stage within 36 h PF at 34 [per thousand], whereas 4.6% of the embryos in 30 [per thousand] developed to morula by 36 h PF. No embryos in 32 [per thousand] developed to morula stage by this time. This is the first study to investigate the responses of S. neumayeri embryos to a decrease in salinity. Antarctic sea urchins have the ability to alter marine ecosystem structure due to their grazing and movements about the sediment, and if S. neumayeri experiences lowered recruitment numbers due to the influx of freshwater from the melting of ice shelves attributed to climate warming, the benthic environment of Antarctica could be substantially impacted.

Book excerpt: This book is the first of two books about sea urchins (echinoids) since 1953 (Th. Mortensen). The detailed and coloured illustrated descriptions enable the reader to identify all species living today in our oceans. Recent scientific searchings are included. Volume I. describes the sea urchins with pentameral symmetry and either with a few spines (cidaroids) or with more or less numerous spines ("regulars") living on the sea floor.

Book The Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate

Download or read book The Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate written by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-19 with total page 1807 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the leading international body for assessing the science related to climate change. It provides policymakers with regular assessments of the scientific basis of human-induced climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for adaptation and mitigation. This IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate is the most comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the observed and projected changes to the ocean and cryosphere and their associated impacts and risks, with a focus on resilience, risk management response options, and adaptation measures, considering both their potential and limitations. It brings together knowledge on physical and biogeochemical changes, the interplay with ecosystem changes, and the implications for human communities. It serves policymakers, decision makers, stakeholders, and all interested parties with unbiased, up-to-date, policy-relevant information. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
