Book Jerusalem and the One God

Download or read book Jerusalem and the One God written by Othmar Keel and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2017-07-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerusalem, with its turbulent history, is without doubt one of the best-known cities of the world. A long line of foreign powers have ruled over it, from as far back as biblical times. But the city owes its importance not to them but to the fact that it is the birthplace of the monotheistic currents that shape Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Othmar Keel sketches in broad brush strokes the historical development of Israelite-Jewish monotheism in and around Jerusalem, arguing that monotheism is “a product of the city, not of the desert,” and describes its integration of polytheistic symbols and perceptions into its worldview. Keel relies on biblical and extrabiblical texts as well as the rich iconographic evidence of archaeological discoveries. Abundant maps and sketches of archaeological artifacts enhance his argument.

Book Die Zahl Sieben im Alten Orient

Download or read book Die Zahl Sieben im Alten Orient written by Gotthard G. G. Reinhold and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In close cooperation with colleagues belonging to different universities, museums and archaeological institutions around the world, the final editor Gotthard G. G. Reinhold is the first to offer us an exhaustive contribution on the symbolism of the number seven in the Ancient Near East. Special attention is given to archaeological material related to various elements relevant to the number seven: decoration on ancient pottery, iconography on stamp and cylinder seals, ivory and shell carving and inlays, depictions on cuneiform tablets, decoration of oil lamps, coins, rock carvings, etc. As for the Bible, the heptades in the cultic life of the Old Testament, in narratives, war traditions, Psalms and Proverbs, in prophetic literature (in both the Old and New Testaments), in the onomasticon and in the literary structure of the biblical texts are traced and analysed. This is an important volume on the subject of numerical symbolism in the Ancient Near East for professors, students and ancient near eastern archaeologists interested in Bible alike.

Book The Scribes of the Torah

Download or read book The Scribes of the Torah written by Konrad Schmid and published by SBL Press. This book was released on 2023-05-26 with total page 955 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revised view of the Pentateuch with consequences for the broader literary history of the Bible This collection of thirty-one studies on the Pentateuch represents more than twenty years of Konrad Schmid’s research and publications advocating for a new view of the Pentateuch’s formation. Schmid’s essays present the case for a Persian period Priestly document that provided a basic narrative thread to the Torah, which included separate, pre-Priestly components of narratives in Genesis and the Moses story. Schmid’s open discussion includes evidence from various fields, such as literary history, comparative cultural history, historical linguistics, epigraphy, and archaeology. The essays are divided into eight sections usefully structured around the themes of the Pentateuch in the Enneateuch, the history of scholarship, the formation of the Torah, Genesis, the Moses story, the Priestly document, legal texts, and the Pentateuch in the history of ancient Israel’s religion.

Book Little Prayer Book 1522 and A Simple Way to Pray 1535

Download or read book Little Prayer Book 1522 and A Simple Way to Pray 1535 written by Mary Jane Haemig and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2017-07-17 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides two of Martin Luther's most significant writings on prayer. In Little Prayer Book (1522), Luther seeks to reform the theology and practice of prayer in clear and understandable language for all people by encouraging simple, direct prayer to God, who promises to hear the one who prays. Luther focuses on the Ten Commandments, Apostles' Creed, and Lord's Prayer, giving his treatment of prayer a catechetical feel that would later provide the structure of his catechisms. In A Simple Way to Pray (1535), Luther offers his barber and all other readers insights into his own prayer life. He organizes his comments around the seven petitions of the prayer Jesus taught to his disciples. He also uses the Ten Commandments and the Apostles' Creed as resources for prayer. He sets out to "kindle a fire in the heart" and increase the reader's eagerness for prayer. This volume is excerpted from The Annotated Luther series, volume 4 (Pastoral Writings). Each volume and selection in the series contains new introductions, extensive annotations, illustrations, and notes to help shed light on Luther's context and to interpret his writings for today.

Book The Triumph of the Symbol

Download or read book The Triumph of the Symbol written by Tallay Ornan and published by Saint-Paul. This book was released on 2005 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the history of Mesopotamian imagery form the mid-second to mid-first millennium BCE. It demonstrates that in spite of rich textual evidence, which grants the Mesopotamian gods and goddesses an anthropmorphic form, there was a clear abstention in various media from visualizing the gods in such a form. True, divine human-shaped cultic images existed in Mesopotamian temples. But as a rule, non-anthropomorphic visual agents such as inanimate objects, animals or fantastic hybrids replaced these figures when they were portrayed outside of their sacred enclosures. This tendency reached its peak in first-millennium Babylonia and Assyria. The removal of the Mesopotamian human-shaped deity from pictorial renderings resembles the Biblical agenda not only in its avoidance of displaying a divine image but also in the implied dual perception of the divine: according to the Bible and the Assyro-Babylonian concept the divine was conceived as having a human form; yet in both cases anthropomorphism was also concealed or rejected, though to a different degree. In the present book, this dual approach toward the divine image is considered as a reflection of two associated rather than contradictory religious worldviews. The plausible consolidation of the relevant Biblical accounts just before the Babylonian Exile, or more probably within the Exile - in both cases during a period of strong Assyrian and Babylonian hegemony - points to a direct correspondence between comparable religious phenomena. It is suggested that far from their homeland and in the absence of a temple for their god, the Judahite deportees adopted and intensified the Mesopotamian avoidance of anthropomorphic picorial portrayals of deities. While the Babylonian representations remained confined to temples, the exiles would have turned a cultic reality - i.e., the nonwritten Babylonian custom - into a written, articulated law that explicity forbade the pictorial representation of God.
