Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Testimony of the Exalted Jesus

Download or read book The Testimony of the Exalted Jesus written by Sarah Underwood Dixon and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interpretation of the phrase 'the testimony of Jesus' in the Book of Revelation has been the centre of much debate, with no clear consensus regarding its meaning. One of the most important but often neglected issues is whether or not the phrase can be read consistently across each instance of its occurrence. The opening lines of the Apocalypse clearly specify that 'the testimony of Jesus' is a moniker for the book of Revelation itself, indicating that the phrase is an internal self-reference to the book's own message. Nevertheless, most interpreters are reluctant to apply this interpretation to the phrase in other parts of the book, leading to varied and inconsistent interpretations of the phrase. Following the intratextual pattern of the apocalyptic books of Daniel and 1 Enoch we can see that it is entirely possible that 'the testimony of Jesus' is a reference to Revelation's own message, an interpretation which is then supported by Dixon's in-depth study of each of the passages in which the phrase occurs. The exploration of the rhetorical impact of interpreting the phrase in this way shows that 'the testimony of Jesus' is not just another title for John's writing, but is something that is given to and even characterizes those who hear the message of the Apocalypse.

Book Jesus and the Angels

Download or read book Jesus and the Angels written by Peter R. Carrell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-07-10 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1997, examines the influence of angelology on the christology of the Apocalypse of John. In the Apocalypse, Jesus appears in glorious form reminiscent of angels in Jewish and Christian literature in the period between 200 BCE and 200 CE. Dr Carrell asks what significance this has for the christology of the Apocalypse. He concludes that by portraying Jesus in such a way that he has the form and function of an angel, and yet is also divine, the Apocalypse both upholds monotheism and at the same time provides a means for Jesus to be presented in visible, glorious form to his Church.

Book The Biblical Canons

Download or read book The Biblical Canons written by Jean-Marie Auwers and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the Proceedings of the 50th Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense: the 40 contributions, written in English, French and German, focus on the canons of the Old and New Testament as well as those of the Bible as a whole. The theme is studied from a variety of historical, hermeneutical and biblical-theological points of view. Several contributions discuss the process that resulted in the canonical status of certain writings, or groups of writings, in particular, such as the Book of Psalms, Ezekiel, the Wisdom of Ben Sira, the Pauline corpus, Acts and the gospels.

Book A Theological German Vocabulary

Download or read book A Theological German Vocabulary written by Walter M. Mosse and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-10-01 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the initiative of Professor Paul Tillich, lectures on theological German were given at Union Theological Seminary, New York (beginning in 1948), later also at Princeton Theological Seminary, at Yale University Divinity School, and at the Theological Seminary of Drew University. In the course of the lectures faculty members and students asked me repeatedly for a special German-English theological vocabulary. This book is intended to meet their request. It contains basic theological expressions the knowledge of which is indispensable for reading theological texts. Furthermore it seemed to be expedient to include words which, although not strictly theological, are often used in a theological context. . . . In principal my selection has been limited to words and phrases current in theological writing of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. --from the Preface

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Ulrich Kortner addresses the issue of apocalyptic anxiety by offering a theological and philosophical evaluation of the apocalyptic. In particular, Kortner looks at how theology, responding in pastoral sensitivity, should deal with apocalyptic fears and anxieties. Kortner concludes that real meaning and hope for the world is possible only after the world's inhabitants deal constructively with the stark reality of the world's end.
