Book Mothers Warriors Guardians of the Soul

Download or read book Mothers Warriors Guardians of the Soul written by Geraldine Theresa Horan and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-08-09 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study shows that women involved in National Socialism in the years 1924 - 1934 developed and shaped a recognizable discourse which communicated and reflected their position and status within the NS movement. The analysis is based on a variety of text-types produced by members of NS women's organisations, and includes official correspondence, circulars, reports, pamphlets, monographs and articles from NS women's journals. It draws upon several areas of linguistic theory, including feminist linguistics, semantics, pragmatics and discourse analysis, and the salient features identified in the female discourse are placed within a sociolinguistic framework. While previous research into the language of the NS-system has largely ignored the possibility of a cohesive female discourse, the study supports the idea that this discourse was dynamic, and at times heterogeneous, whilst also displaying many self-defining and self-referential features. It is characterised by its ambiguities and apparent contradictions, which expresses separateness and difference, yet also solidarity with the NSDAP.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new Forum section focuses on the impact of Digital Humanities on Goethe scholarship and on eighteenth-century German Studies, alongside articles on a diverse range of authors and topics. The Goethe Yearbook is a publication of the Goethe Society of North America, showcasing North American and international scholarship on Goethe and other authors and aspects of the Goethezeit. Volume 27 features the yearbook''s first Forum, a discussion of the impact of Digital Humanities (DH) and "computational criticism" on Goethe scholarship and eighteenth-century German Studies more broadly. For this launch, invited contributors were askedto consider the canon in comparison to "the great unread" (Margaret Cohen): the vast expanse of uncanonized texts. The contributions evince approaches that go beyond the established binary of scholarly methods vs. data sciences; they also explore DH as a way of navigating the gendered fault lines of canon formation. Beyond the Forum, there are articles on Goethe''s self-marketing, on several of his major works, and on pivotal topics in them (orientation, der Gang, and transgression); on nascent anthropology, on Creativity Studies, and on other eighteenth-century figures (Rahel Levin Varnhagen, Karl Phillip Moritz). A newly discovered text by August von Kotzebue, sample entries fromthe prodigious work in progress Lexikon of Philosophical Concepts, and the customary book review section round out the volume. Book The Jewish Self Portrait in European and American Literature

Download or read book The Jewish Self Portrait in European and American Literature written by Hans-Jürgen Schrader and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-07-22 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this collection originated from an international symposium at the University of Haifa and centre around a major topic in German, European and American literature, i.e. the way in which Jewish self-definition, both positive and negative, has materialized as a product of the tensions between secular culture and society on the one hand, and Jewish tradition and religion on the other. The broad range of authors (most of them of German-speaking origin) necessarily results in an almost equally broad range of answers to this central question. The volume is dedicated to the memory of the Israeli literary scholar Chaim Shoham.

Book Challenging Separate Spheres

Download or read book Challenging Separate Spheres written by Marjanne Elaine Goozé and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays centers on women writers who negotiated, interrogated, and challenged the gender ideology of separate spheres through their advocacy and representations of female Bildung. The term Bildung encompasses an individual's entire moral, spiritual, behavioral, emotional, political and intellectual development. The contributors analyze works of fiction, memoirs, autobiographies, letters, the periodical press, and conduct and cookbooks from the mid-1700s to circa 1900 that confront the separate spheres paradigm and promote women's educational and personal development. They examine women's writing and reading practices, moral and gender philosophies, political activism, and work from the home to the stage and factory. Most writers did not repudiate outright existing gender models, but both subtly and overtly subverted and reinterpreted them. In all the texts, the process of female education leads to an assertion of agency. The writers came from different social classes and professional backgrounds, ranging from noblewomen to working-class autobiographers of the later nineteenth century. This volume will be of interest to German cultural, literary, and historical scholars, as well as to those concerned with the development of European feminism, women's education and autobiography.
