Book excerpt: Material Evidence expands on the formal concerns and critical debates developed through Melissa Gordon's exhibition of the same name, following a joint residency with Spike Island and Spike Island Print Studio in Bristol, in the summer of 2013. Gordon's work as a painter and printmaker follows the relationship between representation and abstraction; she often enlarges details to reveal hidden structures, zooming in until textual or pictorial information is reduced to dots and lines. The publication navigates through four concurrently exhibited and ongoing series (Structures for Viewing, Blow Up Modernists, The Daily News RIP, and Material Evidence) installed at Spike Island. This monograph contains a reprint of the early modernist play Collision by Mina Loy, a source that contextualizes Gordon's concern with spatial arrangements and pictorial staging. An essay by Marina Vishmidt reflects on the legacies of modernism and the particular politics of abstraction found within Gordon's practice, and the conversation between Spike Island's curator Marie-Anne McQuay and Gordon investigates how each new body of work stages a reconfiguration of histories, surfaces, and iconographies. Book excerpt: This book unfolds the manifold, complex and intertwined relations between Fuzzy Logic and music in a first comprehensive overview on this topic: systematically as an outline, as completely as possible, in the aspects of Fuzzy Logic in this relation, and especially in music as a process with three main phases, five anthropological layers, and thirteen forms of existence of the art work (Classics, Jazz, Pop, Folklore). Being concerned with the ontological, gnoseological, psychological, and (music-) aesthetical status and the relative importance of different phenomena of relationship between music and Fuzzy Logic, the explication follows the four main principles (with five phenotypes) of Fuzzy Logic with respect to music: similarity, sharpening 1 as filtering, sharpening 2 as crystallization, blurring, and variation. The book reports on years of author’s research on topics that have been only little explored so far in the area of Music and Fuzzy Logic. It merges concepts of music analysis with fuzzy logical modes of thinking, in a unique way that is expected to attract both specialists of music and specialists of Fuzzy Logic, and also non-specialists in both fields. The book introduces the concept of dialectic between sharpening and – conscious – “blurring”. In turn, some important aspects of this dialectic are discussed, placing them in an historical dimension, and ending in the postulation of a 'musical turn' in the sciences, with some important reflections concerning a “Philosophy of Fuzzy Logic”. Moreover, a production-oriented thinking is borrowed from fuzzy logic to musicology in this book, opening new perspectives in music, and possibly also in other artistic fields.

Book excerpt: This book examines how the Cold War had a far-reaching impact on theatre by presenting a range of current scholarship on the topic from scholars from a dozen countries. They represent in turn a variety of perspectives, methodologies and theatrical genres, including not only Bertolt Brecht, Jerzy Grotowski and Peter Brook, but also Polish folk-dancing, documentary theatre and opera production. The contributions demonstrate that there was much more at stake and a much larger investment of ideological and economic capital than a simple dichotomy between East versus West or socialism versus capitalism might suggest. Culture, and theatrical culture in particular with its high degree of representational power, was recognized as an important medium in the ideological struggles that characterize this epoch. Most importantly, the volume explores how theatre can be reconceptualized in terms of transnational or even global processes which, it will be argued, were an integral part of Cold War rivalries.

This volume presents the proceedings of the second International Congress organised in Lausanne by the harmoniques Foundation and held in the Spring of 2004. The papers were given by experts on brass and stringed keyboard instruments. The emphasis was on a variety of historical instrument-making traditions and on the history of the revival of the use of early instruments. The contributions not only included detailed discussions regarding the parameters of performance practice and the use of historical instruments but also about the inspiration given by some of the leading revivalists in these fields. In many cases the contributors placed a special focus on the performance of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.
