Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Jahrhundert?

Finally, he examines the eschatological horizon of the NJ, its possible date of composition, and its relationship with other Dead Sea texts which describe the New Jerusalem or New Temple."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Arch ologie offenbart

Download or read book Arch ologie offenbart written by Tobias Kaempf and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The reclining marble statue of the early Christian virgin martyr Cecilia, completed by the Holy Year of 1600 and still in its original setting in the Roman basilica bearing the saint’s name, has long been recognised as a seminal work in Western art. Yet its cultural, religious, social and political background has never been comprehensively investigated. This interdisciplinary analysis explores the constellation of forces that shaped the genesis, meaning and early reception of the sculpture – a funeral image for both its donor, Cardinal Paolo Camillo Sfondrato, and Cecilia – as well as its impact on the church interior and the contemporary viewer. The cult image emerges as a synthesis of an epoch that is fundamental to our understanding of early modern culture.

Book Anticlericalism in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe

Download or read book Anticlericalism in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally anticlericalism has been regarded as a significant historical factor, by some historians even as the unifying focal point for the host of movements known as the Reformation of the sixteenth century. In forty-one essays eminent historians of culture, religion, and society redefine and redirect the debate regarding the scope and impact of European anticlericalism during the period 1300-1700. The meaning of reform and resentment is here clearly articulated and the sentiments are analyzed which were directed first against all levels of the Roman hierarchy and later as well against the evangelical pastor. Using sources drawn from a wide variety of city and village archives, of literary genres and theological tracts, the articles presented here uncover the clusters of reform hope and bitter resentment directed toward parish priest, monk, bishop and pope, in addition to the early Protestant clergy. The volume highlights the continuity and discontinuity of anticlerical passion, language, goals and actions between the late medieval and Reformation periods.

May this book find many who are willing to dialog with the Revelator." -- Frederick Danker

Book Like a Bride Adorned

Download or read book Like a Bride Adorned written by Lynn R. Huber and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-06-10 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phrase "like a bride adorned" is one of the ways Revelation describes the new Jerusalem which descends from heaven. This phrase can also be read as describing one of the ways interpreters historically have understood the relationship between Revelation and its metaphorical language. In contrast to views that suggest Revelation's metaphorical language is simple adornment, Huber argues that Revelation's persuasive power resides within the text's metaphorical nature and she articulates a method for exploring how Revelation employs metaphor to shape an audience's thought. In order to gain a sense of how metaphorical language works in Revelation's highly metaphorical text,"Like a Bride Adorned:" Reading Metaphor in John's Apocalypse engages one set of conceptual metaphors in relation to Revelation's literary and social-historical milieu. Specifically, Huber explores the conceptual metaphors undergirding Revelation's nuptial or bridal imagery. Positioned at the culmination of the text's, nuptial imagery serves as one the text's final and arguably one of its most important characterizations of the Christian community. Examining the function of Revelation's nuptial imagery involves investigating how the text redeploys conventional metaphorical constructions used in the writings of the Hebrew prophets and how its imagery engages Greco-Roman depictions of women, weddings, and brides. Discourse about marriage and family was such an important part of Revelation's historical context, especially as it was shaped by the Roman Empire, that any discussion of the text's nuptial imagery must examine how it reflects and responds to this discourse. By addressing these questions, we see that Revelation's nuptial imagery serves to further the text's goal of shaping Christian identity in opposition to the social demands of the Roman Empire. Moreover, exploration of the conceptual metaphors undergirding Revelation's "bride adorned" reveals how John seeks to shape Christian identity as a transitional identity. Through metaphor, Revelation encourages its audience to envision the Christian community as a bride who constructs "her" own identity as she transitions into a new role in relation to God and the Lamb. Through the process of exploring Revelation's nuptial imagery with insights gained from conceptual metaphor theory, we uncover the ways that John employs metaphorical language to persuade his audience's thought about themselves and about others. Consequently, this work contributes both to our understanding of the text's nuptial imagery and to our knowledge of how Revelation employs metaphor as tool for persuasion.

Book Augustine the Harvest and Theology 1300 1650

Download or read book Augustine the Harvest and Theology 1300 1650 written by Hagen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this Festschrift dedicated to Heiko Oberman is Augustine reception in theology (1300-1650). Contemporary discussions about an Augustinian school prior to Luther and about Luther's possible relation to such have been intensified by the work of Heiko Oberman. Thirteen invited scholars produced new work. William Courtenay wrote on late medieval discussions of psychic states and human motivations and volitions; Christoph Burger on Hugolin of Orvieto; Tarald Rasmussen on Jacob Perez of Valencia; Manfred Schulze on Johannes von Staupitz; Bernard Hamm on Jerome reception in Nuremberg; Scott Hendrix on Luther's loyalties; Kurt-Victor Selge on Luther's ecclesiology; M.A. Screech on Augustine reception in Rabelais; David Steinmetz on Rom. 7; Arthur Olsen on Martin Chemnitz; James Tanis on Abraham van der Heyden; Suse Rau and Elsie Vezey compiled the Heiko Augustine Oberman Bibliography. Essays are published in their original English or German; English summaries are provided for the German entries. The general student of the period (1300-1650) should gain an overview of the appropriation of Augustine during that time and Professor Oberman's colleagues should profit from the new research contained herein.
