Book The Inner Life of Catholic Reform

Download or read book The Inner Life of Catholic Reform written by Ulrich L. Lehner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "While studies abound about Catholic Reform and its institutional or social history, its spiritual motives and practices, what one could call its "inner life," have been widely neglected. This book examines how these spiritual ideas and practices shaped the Catholic Reform and Catholic view of the world and led to a diverse but peculiarly theological imagination, a new outlook on the self and the world, and influenced human behaviors and sentiments. It tells the story of how the idea of the "inner reform of the soul" shaped a world religion. The historicization of these religious practices and beliefs makes this book also highly accessible to historians and anthropologists. It relies on a plethora of published and unpublished sources, and a wide field of secondary literature. Although the emphasis is on Europe, this book takes a global perspective by integrating material from Africa, America and Asia as it was in this era that Catholicism became a "world religion.""--

Book Introduction to the Study of Liturgy

Download or read book Introduction to the Study of Liturgy written by Albert Gerhards and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worship is at the heart of the Christian faith. This applies equally to all denominations. For that reason it is all the more important that the ordering of worship and its place in the life of the church is regularly rewritten and reinterpreted. This volume--based on the third, completely revised German edition from 2013 by two of the foremost liturgical scholars in Germany--offers a contemporary, comprehensive introduction to the foundations for the study of liturgy today, one from which scholars and students in the English-speaking world can also profit. Beyond appealing to students of liturgy and theology, this book reaches out to everyone who wants to know more about the liturgical essence and dimensions of the church.

Book On the Road to Vatican II

Download or read book On the Road to Vatican II written by Ulrich L. Lehner and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present day, there is widespread confusion regarding the theological achievements of the Catholic Enlightenment. This book outlines such contributions in the fields of biblical exegesis, church reform, liturgical renewal, and the move toward a more tolerant view of other churches and religions. Since some of the most important Catholic Enlighteners lived in Germany, this book concentrates on their endeavors, but also frequently points to other European players. Only an unpolemical historical assessment of the Catholic Enlightenment can help us to get out of the current gridlock of interpreting Vatican II: was there a break with tradition, or was there continuity? By reviewing the historical debates that preceded Vatican II, the unknown, marginalized, or deliberately forgotten roots of the conciliar debates come to light that can help us fine-tune future hermeneutical endeavors. This history is hitherto unknown to most researchers. Indeed, it is possibly the most neglected field of modern literary history.

Download or read book Sacramental Theology written by Herbert Vorgrimler and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both resistance to and renewed interest in the sacraments mark current theological thought. This work acknowledges human limitations of the sacraments but stresses that God's relationship to human beings cannot be other than sacramental." Sacramental structures and events constitute salvation history, and thus permeate all theology. What makes this sacramental view comprehensible is faith; faith is an indispensable precondition for a sacramental theology. Therefore, the author first demonstrates the preconditions of faith on which sacramental theology rests, and what place it holds within the whole of theology. Following this, he briefly presents the concept of sacraments and the history of that concept, the teachings of Church tradition on sacraments in general, and the basic features of a sacramental theology. Next, he explains from a theological perspective the traditional sacraments of the Catholic Church, including related topics such as indulgences and sacramentals.

Download or read book History and Religion written by Bernd-Christian Otto and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History is one of the most important cultural tools to make sense of one’s situation, to establish identity, define otherness, and explain change. This is the first systematic scholarly study that analyses the complex relationship between history and religion, taking into account religious groups both as producers of historical narratives as well as distinct topics of historiography. Coming from different disciplines, the authors of this volume ask under which conditions and with what consequences religions are historicised. How do religious groups employ historical narratives in the construction of their identities? What are the biases and elisions of current analytical and descriptive frames in the History of Religion? The volume aims at initiating a comparative historiography of religion and combines disciplinary competences of Religious Studies and the History of Religion, Confessional Theologies, History, History of Science, and Literary Studies. By applying literary comparison and historical contextualization to those texts that have been used as central documents for histories of individual religions, their historiographic themes, tools and strategies are analysed. The comparative approach addresses circum-Mediterranean and European as well as Asian religious traditions from the first millennium BCE to the present and deals with topics such as the origins of religious historiography, the practices of writing and the transformation of narratives.

Book Joachim Brohm Valentina Seidel

Download or read book Joachim Brohm Valentina Seidel written by Joachim Brohm and published by Snoeck Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St Trinitas Church Leipzig The consecration of a new church in May 2015 was the end of an odyssey for a Leipzig parish community that has lasted for over seventy years. With the construction of the new building by Schulz & Schulz architects, St Trinitas has returned to the center of the city: pro-m-inently situated right across from the monumental town-hall built in 1905. A series of about 120 carefully selected photographs follow the continuous changes at the construction-site between 2012 and 2015. The evolving new architecture also provides the backdrop for a selection of portraits: teenagers celebrating their holy confirmation, workmen of multinational origin as well as the artists that were commissioned to develop works for the building. By integrating a number of additional photographs from different artistic projects into the flow of the series, Joachim Brohm and Valentina Seidel de-velop an unexpected and complex visual nar-rative, lead-ing viewers far beyond the boundaries of conventional documentation.

The worship atlas of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE) provides a differentiated but comprehensive view on significant developments of the ecclesial landscape in liturgical matters. This theological foundation contains contributions by experts from theory and practice coming from Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Italy, Scotland, Switzerland, and Germany. Denominational backgrounds and current challenges (for example multilingual services) become apparent. And successful celebrations are presented as for example alternative worship services and open concepts like the Church Night.
