Book The Seven Years War

Download or read book The Seven Years War written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-11-09 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Seven Years’ War: Global Views, Mark H. Danley, Patrick J. Speelman, and sixteen other contributors reach beyond traditional approaches to illuminate the conflict as world war. An introduction addresses the challenges of discretely defining the war. Chapters examine theaters such as the Carnatic, Bengal, the Philippines, Portugal, Senegal, and the Caribbean. Other chapters treat understudied topics such as the Anglo-Cherokee campaigns, Sweden’s participation, Ottoman neutrality, the Vatican, European perceptions of Cossacks and Kalmyks, the Enlightenment and the war, the choosing of sides in Europe and North America, social and political aspects of French and British military life, operational reconnaissance, and the war’s complex ending in western Germany. A conclusion situates the war as a marker of modernity. Contributors are in order of appearance: Juergen Luh, Armstrong Starkey, Matthew C. Ward, G.J. Bryant, Johannes Burkhardt, Gunnar Aselius, Virginia H. Aksan, Julia Osman, Ewa Anklam, Mrian Fuessel, James Searing, Richard Harding, John Oliphant, Mark H. Danley, Patrick J. Book Religious Institutes in Western Europe in the 19th and 20th Centuries

Download or read book Religious Institutes in Western Europe in the 19th and 20th Centuries written by Jan de Maeyer and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 19th century, religious institutes (orders and congregations) underwent an unprecedented revival. As partners in a large-scale religious modernisation movement, they were welcomed by the Roman Catholic Church in its pursuit of a new role in society (especially in the educational and health-care sectors). At the same time, the Church also deemed it necessary to keep their spectacular growth in check. Until the 1960s religious institutes played an important role both in society at large as well as within the church (for example, at the level of the missions, liturgy and art). Yet, relatively little research has been done on their development either in ecclesiastical or in broad cultural history. As a basis for further study, The European Forum on the History of Religious Insitutes in the 19th and 20th Centuries offers this study of the historiography of religious institutes and of their position in civil and canon law.

Book European Politics 1815 1848

Download or read book European Politics 1815 1848 written by Frederick C. Schneid and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three intervening decades between the Congress of Vienna and the Revolutions of 1848 are marked by enormous social, political, economic and cultural change. Liberalism, nationalism, romanticism and industrialism profoundly affected the course of Europe and compelled conservative monarchies to accept the principles of collective action and military force to curb political revolution. In the years immediately following 1815, the Quadruple and Holy Alliances served the dual purpose of preventing a restoration of Bonapartism and suppressing revolutions. By the 1820s these international associations dissipated, but the principles upon which they were founded informed the decisions of the respective governments through 1848. The classic articles and papers collected in this volume attempt to illustrate that despite the substantial changes to European society which occurred during these thirty years, European powers accepted common principles which influenced their state's domestic and foreign policies.

Book War State and Society in W rttemberg 1677 1793

Download or read book War State and Society in W rttemberg 1677 1793 written by Peter H. Wilson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-03-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a radical new interpretation of the aims of the lesser German princes during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries through the example of the duchy of Württemberg. Arguing that the princes' political ambitions were fundamental in shaping the internal development of their territories, the author sheds new light on the political importance of the notorious German 'soldier trade' and its role in international diplomacy. The wider social and political impact of these policies is also investigated in a comparative framework, while traditional interpretations of the dramatic struggle between duke and estates are challenged in a reassessment of the role of early modern representative institutions in German state development. The relationship of these internal political struggles to the different elements of the Holy Roman Empire is revealed, opening up new perspectives on the role of the German states within the imperial structure and revealing the empire as a flawed but functioning political system.

Book Politics and Statecraft in the Kingdom of Greece 1833 1843

Download or read book Politics and Statecraft in the Kingdom of Greece 1833 1843 written by John Anthony Petropulos and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three foreign-oriented political parties-Russian, French, and English-emerged during the Greek Revolutionary period from 1821 to 1827 and played a prominent role in Greek politics until the 1850's. Little has been known or written about the activities of these parties between 1833 and 1843, when a newly established monarchy under the Bavarian King Otho was attempting to lay the foundations of a new state. It is one of the purposes of this book to locate and classify the parties, to determine their membership, to analyze their institutional structure and societal function, and to discover why their chief identifying characteristic was their foreign orientation. The author seeks to determine the role of the parties under a nonconstitutionalist regime at a time when the basic structure of the Greek state was being created. Originally published in 1968. Book Metternich s German Policy Volume II

Download or read book Metternich s German Policy Volume II written by Enno E. Kraehe and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using new archival sources, this book shows that Prussia sought not the unity of Germany but its partition into five masses loosely enough joined to assure her control of the North. Hardenberg, not Metternich, supported the feudalistic claims of the estates suppressed by Napoleon and the resurrection of ancient estates' assemblies based mainly on corporate orders.
