Download or read book Griechische Tempel und Heiligt mer written by Gottfried Gruben and published by Hirmer Verlag GmbH. This book was released on 2001 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Origins of Greek Temple Architecture

Download or read book The Origins of Greek Temple Architecture written by Alessandro Pierattini and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-29 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Alessandro Pierattini offers a comprehensive study of the evolution of pre-archaic Greek temple architecture from the eleventh to mid-seventh century BCE. Demystifying the formative stages of Greek architecture, he traces how temples were transformed from unassuming shrines made of perishable materials into large stone and terracotta monuments. Grounded in archaeological evidence, the volume analyzes the design, function, construction, and aesthetic of the Greek temple. While the book's primary focus is architectural, it also draws on non-architectural material culture, ancient cult practice, and social history, which also defined the context that fostered the Greek temple's initial development. In reconstituting this early history, Pierattini also draws attention to new developments as well as legacies from previous eras. Ultimately, he reveals why the temple's pre-Archaic development is not only of interest in itself, but also a key to the origins of the Greek monumental architecture of the Archaic period.

Book The Architecture of the Ancient Greek Theatre

Download or read book The Architecture of the Ancient Greek Theatre written by Rune Frederiksen and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of papers following the conference The Architecture of the Ancient Greek Theatre, held in Athens in January 2012. Fundamental publications on the topic have not been issued for many years. Bringing together the leading experts on theatre architecture, this conference aimed at introducing new facts and important comprehensive studies on Greek theatres to the public. The published volume is, first of all, a presentation of new excavation results and new analyses of individual monuments. Many well-known theatres such as the one of Dionysos in Athens, and others at Dodone, Corinth, and Sikyon have been re-examined since their original publication, with stunning results. New research, presented in this volume, includes moreover less well known, or even newly found, ancient Greek theatres in Albania, Asia Minor, Cyprus, and Sicily. Further studies on the history of research, on regional theatrical developments, terminology, and function, as well as a perspective on Roman theatres built in Greek traditions make this volume a comprehensive volume of new research for expert scholars as well as for students and the interested public.

Book The Sanctuary of Athena at Sounion

Download or read book The Sanctuary of Athena at Sounion written by Barbara A. Barletta and published by American School of Classical Studies at Athens. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Temple of Athena at Sounion has long been recognized as one of the most unusual buildings in the architectural history of Greece. Its plan, with columns uniquely on the front and only one side, is unparalleled in the Greek world. Excavations of the temple and other buildings there, however, were complicated by the fact that many architectural pieces from the site had been reused in a Roman temple in the Athenian Agora. Here, Barletta provides a fascinating examination of the early excavations at Sounion, the debate over who was worshipped at the so-called Small Temple within the sanctuary, the varied architectural influences on the Temple of Athena, and the later use of its architectural pieces in the Athenian Agora. Building on unpublished work by William B. Dinsmoor Jr. and Homer A. Thompson, this study represents the first comprehensive view of the temple and its sanctuary.
