Book Studien zur Entstehungsgeschichte und Intention des Kolosserbriefs

Download or read book Studien zur Entstehungsgeschichte und Intention des Kolosserbriefs written by Angela Standhartinger and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-04-09 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the Epistle to the Colossians as a pseudepigraphic letter. It is concerned with how different traditions associated with Paul and his thought were appropriated by Pauline communities in the aftermath of his death. Extensive attention is paid to the possibility of Colossians' interaction with oral traditions, which includes consideration of the oral context for Paul's own correspondence and ministry. In recovering these traditions, Colossians creates a heavenly letter and a testament, designed so as to assure readers of the apostle's ongoing aid and to interpret the theological significance of his death. The analysis of different literary and rhetorical characteristics of Colossians (pseudephigraphy, orality, etc.) is placed within the context of both contemporaneous Jewish (esp. Sapiential) traditions and the traditions of the Greco-Roman philosophic schools. One chapter deals with the origin and purpose of the 'Haustafel'.

Book Die Gottesvorstellungen in der antik j dischen Apokalyptik

Download or read book Die Gottesvorstellungen in der antik j dischen Apokalyptik written by Stefan Beyerle and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2005-07-01 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph studies the theological motivations behind certain Jewish apocalypses by focusing on the mighty acts of God recounted in these writings. In particular, the work examines the various depictions of God’s acts and attributes as a means for learning about the individuals and groups responsible for the transmission of these apocalypses. Three prominent motifs, among others, receive attention here: theophanies (e.g., I Enoch 1:3–9; 25:3; 77:1; Daniel 4:10, 20; 7:9–10, 13–14), portrayals of the resurrection (e.g., I Enoch 102 – 104; Daniel 12:1–3), and interpretations of the (Babylonian) Exile in connection with the “new creation” (e.g., Qumran, Jubilees, Pseudo-Philo). Apocalypticism provides a framework for various theologies. Generally speaking, God is shown as the most prominent figure in these dramas of eschatological events. The authors of these writings typically held that their only deliverance could arise from the imminent arrival of an otherworldly eon ushered in by the power of God.

Book Brot Licht und Weinstock

Download or read book Brot Licht und Weinstock written by Silke Petersen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-05-31 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study considers the “I am” sayings in the Gospel of John, interpreted in the context of their reception in late antiquity. It takes an intertextual approach, considering both inner-biblical parallels and extra-biblical texts, which have been much neglected in recent Johannine scholarship. A comparative analysis of the “I am” formula is complemented by the consideration of the metaphors of the predicative “I am” words, focussing particularly on the use of "bread", "light" and "vine" and the context of these metaphors in the Gospel of John and elsewhere. This discussion demonstrates that Johannine Christology is profoundly incarnational.

Book Prophets of Old and The Day of the End

Download or read book Prophets of Old and The Day of the End written by Tigchelaar and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prophets of Old and The Day of the End argues for a historical and literary approach to apocalyptic. It tackles the problem of the origins of early Jewish apocalyptic by describing the correspondences and differences between some so-called protoapocalyptic and apocalyptic texts. The bulk of the book consists of exegetical studies of parts of Zechariah, Deuterozechariah and the Enochic Book of Watchers. Most of these studies offer new interpretations of the examined texts. The framework of the book presents fresh perspectives on apocalyptic. Some parts are more important to the scholar of post-exilic prophecy, and other parts to the student of the intertestamental literature. Yet, the overall approach and the conclusions bearing on the phenomenon of apocalyptic are of interest to scholars of both fields.

Book The Stranger in Ancient and Mediaeval Jewish Tradition

Download or read book The Stranger in Ancient and Mediaeval Jewish Tradition written by Géza G. Xeravits and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010-02-23 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents selected papers read at the first meeting of the Society for Jewish and Biblical Studies in Central Europe, in Piliscsaba, Hungary, February 2009, but does not publish the proceedings of this meeting (for a clarification see here). The papers investigate various aspects of the concept “Stranger” in Jewish tradition, from the Hebrew Bible to Mediaeval Jewish thought. The bulk of the material focuses on Early Jewish literature, which mirrors an intensive interaction with the Hellenistic system of thought, and the development of concurring Jewish interpretations of traditional values. The papers of the volume provide insightful case studies about the formation of Jewish identity in diverse periods of Israelite and Jewish history, as well as the different attitudes to strangers, being either outsiders, or belonging to opposing sects of Judaism itself. The reader finds essays of historical, literary, and hermeneutical attention; of interest also to scholars of various forms of ancient and mediaeval Judaism.

Book Enoch and the Growth of and Apocalyptic Tradition

This book was released on 2023-12-07 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: VanderKam carries further an investigation of the relation between wisdom and apocalypse. He shows that not simply wisdom, but mantic wisdom has informed the authors of 1 Enoch 1-36, 73-107. VanderKam affirms the basic correctness of each researcher but sees in their work shortcomings which his own study seeks to rectify.

Book The Psalms in Israel s Worship

Download or read book The Psalms in Israel s Worship written by Sigmund Mowinckel and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important contributions to our understanding of the psalms, "The Psalms in Israel's Worship" by Sigmund Mowinckel has largely provided the framework and suppositions of modern Psalms study. Fully revised from the original Norwegian edition and now featuring a substantial new foreword by James Crenshaw, this classic work (two volumes in one) argues that the psalms originated in actual temple worship and were used regularly to add drama to Israelbs adoration of Yahweh. Throughout this fascinating work, Mowinckel carefully explores the relationship of the various psalm types to the congregationbs devotional life, including hymns of praise from Israel's national festivals, psalms of lamentation and penitence, and personal or private psalms of thanksgiving. Other topics include the psalms' relationship to prophecy and wisdom, their composition and collection, their style and performance, and the technical terminology involved in Psalms study. Praise for "The Psalms in Israel's Worship" bWe must be very grateful to Mowinckel and all who have helped him to make available this standard work in psalms research to a larger audience.b -- "Journal of Biblical Literature" bA mere review must fail to do justice to this bookbs awesome learning and insight.b -- "Catholic Biblical Quarterly" bBeyond any doubt whatever, this book represents thorough scholarship and has to be taken into consideration by any teacher of the Old Testament.b -- "Princeton Seminary Bulletin"
