Book Negotiating the Boundary

Download or read book Negotiating the Boundary written by Matthias Mohr and published by Lit Verlag. This book was released on 1997 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until 1994, the year South Africa experienced her first democratic elections, the country was notorious for its ruthless apartheid policy and its violent political climate. By then, the antagonism between the recently unbanned black political parties had reached its pathetic peak. Among those who had to bear the impact of intimidation, violence and murder were the Zulu Zionists. Being part of the African Independent Churches, Zulu Zionists have always been apolitical and against any form of violence. Yet, how were they able to uphold their religious principals and ideals in a time where being impartial meant to sympathise with the political adversary? During 22 months of fieldwork, the author observed how Zulu Zionists in the township of Kwa Mashu, Durban, "walked the tightrope" in order to maintain their identity as apolitical and peace loving christians. This thesis is an excellent account based upon able, meticulous and very difficult field research and upon deep scholarly knowledge.

  • Author : Serge Michailof
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018-06-29

Download or read book Africanistan written by Serge Michailof and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-29 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Africa, progress can be seen across the board. But the important question is whether this so-called progress is sustainable. The continent is a powder keg: the powder is demographics and unemployment the detonator. By 2050, the number of young people of working age in Africa is expected to be three times that of China’s. But will there be enough jobs for them? What is troubling for the continent is even more dramatic for the Sahel, a huge region of about 100 million inhabitants where insecurity is spreading like a bushfire. Despite major differences in geography and culture, there are huge similarities between the Sahel and Afghanistan: a demographic impasse, stagnating agriculture, widespread rural misery, high unemployment, deep ethnic and religious fault lines, weak states, regional instability, drug trafficking, and the spread of radical Islam. And unfortunately the same recipes that failed in Afghanistan are being rolled out in the Sahel. Are we headed to a ‘Sahelistan’ and to an ‘Africanistan’? Serge Michailof helps us find the answer to this important question.

Book Shaping Change strategies of Transformation

Download or read book Shaping Change strategies of Transformation written by Werner Weidenfeld and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The images of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and of the Silent Revolution in Eastern Europe have become symbols of political transformation. Over the end of the 20th century, attempts were also made in other regions of the world to transform authoritarian regimes and planned economies into market-based democracies. Managing this change is one of the greatest political challenges of our time. The experiences since 1980, however, constitute a vast body of knowledge for leaders who will confront similar challenges in the future. This text presents criteria for the evaluation of the transformation processes toward democracy and a market economy, with comparative country surveys of Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, South Korea, Taiwan and Uruguay. The authors also provide criteria for evaluating development processes such as overcoming structural underdevelopment, strengthening the rule of law and creating a civil society, with related surveys of Bolivia, Mali and Mauritius.

Book Migration Mobility and Borders

Download or read book Migration Mobility and Borders written by Thomas Geisen and published by Lit Verlag. This book was released on 2004 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topics of migration, mobility, and borders gained a new relevance in the world after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York. The world has become acutely aware that national borders have taken on a different meaning and are no longer secure mechanisms that provide for the safety of any country's citizens. At the same time, international organizations and agreements have encouraged the movement of people as well as goods across borders. The authors of this volume describe how borders have become constructed and permeated through analyses on a range of topics, including migration, colonialism, refugees, minority politics, international politics, and identity politics. This group of international contributors address how these issues are situated in different parts of the world, including Europe, Southeast Asia, Australia, and the United States. Thomas Geisen, has a master of arts in politics and sociology and a Diploma in Social Work, having studied at the Technical University of Social Work in Saarbrcken, the University of Trier, and London Guildhall University. He is lecturer and researcher at the University of Zrich. Anthony Andrew Hickey is professor of sociology at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Development Sociology at Cornell University, in New York. He has taught at George Mason University (U.S.A.) and the University of Hannover (Germany) and served as department head of sociology at George Mason University and dean of The Graduate School at Western Carolina University.
