Download or read book Radical Islam Rising written by Quintan Wiktorowicz and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2005-07-21 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the West denounces the spread of radical Islam in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and elsewhere in the Muslim world, it tends to overlook the development of Islamic extremism in its own societies. Over the past several decades, groups like al-Qaeda have been supported by thousands of citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom, and other Western democracies. Rejecting their national identity, they have heeded international calls to "jihad" and formed extremist groups to fight their own countries. This groundbreaking book represents one of the first systematic attempts to explain why Westerners join radical Islamic groups. Quintan Wiktorowicz details the mechanisms that attract potential recruits, the instruments of persuasion that convince them that radical groups represent "real Islam," and the socialization process that prods them to engage in risky extremism. Throughout, he traces the subtle process that can turn seemingly unreligious people into supporters of religious violence. The author's invaluable insights are based upon nearly unprecedented access to a radical Islamic group in the West. His extraordinary fieldwork forms the basis of a detailed case study of al-Muhajiroun, a transnational movement based in London that supports Bin Laden and other Islamic terrorists. Through its rich empirical detail, this book explains why ordinary people join extremist movements.

Download or read book Linking Sustainable Livelihoods to Natural Resources and Governance written by Abdul-Mumin Abdulai and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-29 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the current level and trend of poverty in the Muslim World, including selected countries in Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia, East Asia, the Pacific and South America. Authors explore themes of poverty reduction, poverty alleviation and the extent of influences on social and economic development, particularly natural resource endowments (especially mineral resources) and their utilization. Chapters explore theory and practice, including governance and programmes, and take a detailed look at Zakat as a faith-based policy tool, to reduce poverty and improve livelihoods and thus contribute to better environmental stewardship. The final chapters look at development questions in the Muslim World and make policy recommendations, including a proposed multi-dimensional development collaboration model called the Development Collaboration Octagon Model (DeCOM). Readers will discover theoretical explanations of poverty and how poverty hampers the development of many nations because the poor are unable to partake actively in the development process. Poverty indicators and measurement are discussed, and trends of economic growth including productivity, manufacturing, trade patterns, investment and saving activity, and socio-economic developments are all explored: supporting data is presented in tables and figures, throughout this text. Authors explore the potency and success stories of public poverty alleviation strategies and programmes pursued in the Muslim world, especially the extent to which the institution of Zakat has been effectively incorporated into public poverty alleviation strategies. Policy options required to enhance social and economic development are proposed, to help pull the poor out of the poverty trap into the mainstream economy in the Muslim world. This work will appeal to anyone wishing to scrutinise poverty, its parameters and its relationship with the development of countries in the Muslim world. Scholars in the fields of economics, sociology, geography and Islamic studies will all find something of value here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enter into the world of medieval Baghdad as Zaytuna and Tein solve mysteries and come to terms with the legacy of their mother and the violence that has consigned them to lives without love. Widely used in university courses, each mystery uncovers a different aspect of medieval Islamic history. "Completely engrossing and richly atmospheric. Tenth century Baghdad comes alive through the eyes of a dazzling cast of characters." —Ausma Zehanat Khan, critically acclaimed author of Blackwater Falls, A Deadly Divide from The Getty-Khattak Mysteries, and The Khorasan Archives The Lover Book One in The Sufi Mysteries Baghdad, 295 Hijri (907 CE) Zaytuna just wants to be left alone to her ascetic practices and nurse her dark view of the world. But when an impoverished servant girl she barely knows comes and begs her to bring some justice to the death of a local boy, she is forced to face the suffering of the most vulnerable in Baghdad and the emotional and mystical legacy of her mother, a famed ecstatic whose love for God eclipsed everything. The Lover is a historically sensitive mystery that introduces us to the world of medieval Baghdad and the lives of the great Sufi mystics, washerwomen, Hadith scholars, tavern owners, the enslaved, corpsewashers, police, and children indentured to serve in the homes of the wealthy. It asks what it means to have family when you have nearly no one left, what it takes to love and be loved by those who have stuck by you, and how one can come to love God and everything He’s done to you. The Jealous Book Two in The Sufi Mysteries Baghdad, 295 Hijri (907 CE) When a distinguished scholar dies at the Barmakid hospital in Baghdad, nearly everyone points the finger at his enslaved servant Mu’mina, as the one who called a demon to kill him. Tein, a former frontier fighter turned investigator with the Grave Crimes Section, has no time for religion, let alone jinn, and sets out to prove her innocent. But Ammar, Tein’s superior and old wartime friend, has already pushed her case before the Police Chief’s court where she’s sure to be executed or condemned to rot in the prisons built into the damp walls of Baghdad’s Round City. With the help of his twin sister, Zaytuna, his childhood friend, Mustafa, and Zaytuna’s friend, the untamable Saliha, Tein plunges into a dangerous investigation that takes them into the world of talisman-makers and seers, houses of prostitution and gambling, and the fractious secular and religious court systems, all in an effort to turn back the tragic circumstances set in motion by Ammar’s destructive fear of a girl horribly wronged. The Unseen Book Three in The Sufi Mysteries Baghdad, 295 Hijri (908 CE) When a young man is found dead, killed in the exact manner as a martyr slain on the fields of Karbala some two hundred years before, there is no mistaking it as anything other than an attack on the Shia community of Baghdad. The city is on edge as religious and political factions are exposed sending the caliph’s army into the streets. Investigators, Ammar and Tein, have to clear the case, one way or another, before violence erupts. But amateur sleuth, Zaytuna, has had a visionary dream of the murder that holds the key to solving the murder. Can she can read its signs? And will Tein and Ammar listen? The Peace Book Four in The Sufi Mysteries Baghdad, 297 Hijri (909 CE) When an unscrupulous young scholar who claims to possess a controversial Quran manuscript goes missing, most of his colleagues are only too happy to see him gone. Is he merely drunk in one of Baghdad’s gambling houses? Is he hiding while he considers what to do with the manuscript? Or is his life in danger for the claim of having the manuscript at all? A friend of the missing man asks Mustafa for help, pulling Tein, Ammar, and Zaytuna into a case that forces them to make choices threatening their hard won peace.

Download or read book Two Billion Caliphs written by Haroon Moghul and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explains the attraction of Muslims to their faith, and discusses the challenges contemporary Islam confronts, and how we might imagine an Islamic theology and identity ready to face tomorrow Islam is often associated with and limited to the worst of the world—extremism, obscurantism, misogyny, bigotry. So why would so many people associate with such a fundamentalist faith? Two Billion Caliphs advocates for a way of being Muslim in the world, ready for today and prepared for tomorrow. Unlike stale summaries, which restrict themselves to facts and figures, Haroon Moghul presents a deeply Muslim perspective on the world, providing Islamic answers to universal questions: Who are we? What are we doing here? What happens to us when we die? And from description, Moghul moves to prescription, aspiring to something outrageous and audacious. Two Billion Caliphs describes what Islam has been and what it is, who its heroes are, what its big ideas are, but not only to tell you about the past or the present, but to speak to the future. Two Billion Caliphs finds that Islam was a religion of intimacy, a faith rooted in and reaching for love, and that it could be and should be again. Fulfilling that destiny depends on the efforts of Muslims to reclaim their faith, rebuild their strength, and reimagine their future, on their own terms. Two Billion Caliphs offers Muslim thoughts for the age ahead, to create an interpretation Islam of and for days to come, the kind of religion the world’s Muslims deserve, with echoes of the confident faith Muslims once had. The destiny of Islam, then, is not, as so many prefer to argue, a reformation. It is a counter-reformation. A restoration of what once was.
Download or read book From The Islamic Heritage Truly Halal Humour written by Abdirazaq Aden Mogeh and published by Abu Qubais. This book was released on 2020-05-10 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many muslims turn to materials labeled as Halal banter or halal humour in order to take a break and have a bit of laugh. The problem is that the majority of these materials (Halal banter /humour) is often just a recycling of memes from non Muslim sources. A lot of it is shallow and lacks the wit or depth many muslims are looking for. A lot of the times, religious practises are used in a mocking scenario. The practising muslim finds it hard to enjoy any of it without feeling guilty or uneasy. This is while the Islamic library and heritage is brimming with light hearted content that serve as an amusement and entertainment for the heart as well as a record of the social and cultural history of the past generations. Muslim historians and chronologists ensured to preserve any interesting stories involving bizzare events, humor or anything else out of the ordinary in their books of history. They also included biographies and stories of those famed for their humour or entertaining stories such as Asha`ab, Juha and others. We find plenty of these type of materials in the classical works of famed scholars such as Imam al-Dhahabi in his 'Siyar A'lam al-Nubala', al-Khateeb al-Baghdadi in his `History of Baghdad`, and ibn Asa`kir in his `History of Damascus`, who did not leave out anything that has reached them no matter how trivial it might be; no doubt with the intention of preserving it for future generations. Additionally, books dedicated to humorous or interesting stories have been authored. Examples of this include `The Stories of the Fools and the Dumb` and `The Intelligent` by ibn al-Jawzi, `al-Tatfil: Wa-hikayat al-tufailiyin` (Interloping and the Stories of the Interlopers) by al-Khateeb al-Baghdadi. Many books dealing with humour and storytelling which are based on these classical sources have been written in modern time such as `Smile` by Sheikh Aidh al-Qarni. However, all these works are written in Arabic and little work has been carried out throughout the years and up until now into translating these books into English, As a result , English speaking readers are left out from accessing this enriching and entertaining side of the Islamic heritage. Unaware of and unable to access this side of the Islamic library, these readers would look in any other place but the Islamic library when seeking something light hearted and entertaining believing that these kind of theme is non-existent in the Islamic heritage. "From The Islamic Heritage :Truly Halal Humour " dives deep into the ocean of muslim literature to bring out pearls of humour and wit from this hidden treasure.
