Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did The Sun Shine Before You Were Born? is written mainly for children aged 3 to 7. Although primarily intended to be read aloud by a parent, it has also been written and designed for use with the beginning reader in mind. The book focuses on the family and how it grows, because young children are intensely curious about their relationship to it. The illustrations show a wide variety of family situations to stimulate a child''s awareness and acceptance of differences in lifestyles and cultures. This sharing of values and ideas will help parent and child communicate better with each other.Did The Sun Shine Before You Were Born? does not try to give all the answers about sex and the family to every child, nor does it presume to make choices or determine attitudes for parent and child. It is intended to be an open, comfortable book that provides a simple framework of important information without prejudicing individual growth.

Download or read book Sexuality written by Betty N. Gordon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few things that stir up our culture more than sex, particularly sex and children. Sexual behavior in children represents, to far too many people, further proof of the moral decay of our society. Any issue that provokes as strong an emotional reaction as childhood sexuality is obviously in need of a rational discussion. The best features of thought and reason include their moderating influence on overheated and reaction emotions. Consequently, this book by Betty Gordon and Carolyn Schroeder represents a very important, and even brave, counter to irrationality. When the Surgeon General of the United States is forced to resign because the words "children" and "masturbation" appear in the same sentence, you know that there is a great deal of misunderstanding about sexuality. My own evolution as a researcher in the area of child sexual abuse is a model of how naivete can be corrected by knowledge. Some of my early research in sexual abuse of children led me to realize that sexual behavior was a reliable marker of victimization in a relatively large percentage of children (Friedrich, Urquiza, & Beilke, 1986). My blinders to sexuality were evident in that I had not even hypothesized that to be the case in this early, exploratory research. When I realized how important sexual behavior was, several colleagues and I set out to interview parents and foster parents of sexually abused children more specifically. These adults were routinely quite reactive to our queries.

Download or read book Wandering Spirits written by Janne Flora and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-03-28 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is common to think of the Arctic as remote, perched at the farthest reaches of the world—a simple and harmonious, isolated utopia. But the reality, as Janne Flora shows us, is anything but. In Wandering Spirits, Flora reveals how deeply connected the Arctic is to the rest of the world and how it has been affected by the social, political, economic, and environmental shifts that ushered in the modern age. In this innovative study, Flora focuses on Inuit communities in Greenland and addresses a central puzzle: their alarmingly high suicide rate. She explores the deep connections between loneliness and modernity in the Arctic, tracing the history of Greenland and analyzing the social dynamics that shaped it. Flora’s thorough, sensitive engagement with the families that make up these communities uncovers the complex interplay between loneliness and a host of economic and environmental practices, including the widespread local tradition of hunting. Wandering Spirits offers a vivid portrait of a largely overlooked world, in all its fragility and nuance, while engaging with core anthropological concerns of kinship and the structure of social relations.
