L'idéal persistant de souplesse et d'harmonie, de laisser les choses être sans obsession utilitariste, a sans doute négativement affecté un développement scientifique et technique comparable à celui de l'Occident, mais en revanche nous enseigne à sourire en dépit des avatars d'une histoire souvent cataclysmique. La pensée chinoise figure ainsi un esthétisme patient et remplit un des buts majeurs de toute philosophie : celui de mieux vivre. L'étude de cette pensée comme expérience en fait l'expérience d'une civilisation.
