Book Historical Dictionary of Children s Literature

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Children s Literature written by Emer O'Sullivan and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-11-22 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children's literature comes from a number of different sources-folklore (folk- and fairy tales), books originally for adults and subsequently adapted for children, and material authored specifically for them-and its audience ranges from infants through middle graders to young adults (readers from about 12 to 18 years old). Its forms include picturebooks, pop-up books, anthologies, novels, merchandising tie-ins, novelizations, and multimedia texts, and its genres include adventure stories, drama, science fiction, poetry, and information books. The Historical Dictionary of Children's Literature relates the history of children's literature through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, a bibliography, and over 500 cross-referenced dictionary entries on authors, books, and genres. Some of the most legendary names in all of literature are covered in this important reference, including Hans Christian Anderson, L. Frank Baum, Lewis Carroll, Roald Dahl, Charles Dickens, C.S. Lewis, Beatrix Potter, J.K. Rowling, Robert Louis Stevenson, Mark Twain, J.R.R. Tolkien, Jules Verne, and E.B. White.

Book What is Qu b cois Literature

Download or read book What is Qu b cois Literature written by Rosemary Chapman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question 'What is Québécois literature?' might seem innocent and easily answerable. But as Rosemary Chapman shows in this compelling study, answering that question requires no less than the charting of the entire cultural history of French Canada, the contextualizing of francophone writing in Canada within postcolonialism, and the challenging of literary history to rethink its nation-based framework. Brilliantly navigating these ambitions, she provides the first major literary history of Québec, what will be compulsory reading for scholars in francophone postcolonial studies and an ideal introduction for anglophone scholars of Canadian literature.

Book The Feminist Encyclopedia of French Literature

Download or read book The Feminist Encyclopedia of French Literature written by Eva M. Sartori and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-07-30 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest known literary productions by women living in Europe were probably written by French writers. As early as the 12th century, women troubadours in the south of France were writing poems. French women continued writing through the ages, their number increasing as education became more available to women of all classes. And yet, of the great number of works by women writers who preceded the current feminist movement, very few have survived. A few writers such as Marie de France, George Sand, and Simone de Beauvoir became part of the canon. But critics, mostly male, had judged the works of only a few women writers worthy of recognition. As part of the feminist move to reclaim women writers and to rethink literary history, scholars in French literature began to take a new look at women writers who had been popular during their lifetimes but who had not been admitted into the canon. This reference book provides extensive information about French women writers and the world in which they lived. Included are several hundred alphabetically arranged entries for authors; literary genres, such as the novel, poetry, and the short story; literary movements, such as classicism, realism, and surrealism; life-cycle events particular to women, such as menstruation and menopause; events and institutions which affected women differently than men, such as revolutions, wars, and laws on marriage, divorce, and education. The volume spans French literature from the Middle Ages to the present and covers those writers who lived and worked mainly in France. The entries are written by expert contributors and each includes bibliographical information. The entries focus on each writer's awareness of how her gender shaped her outlook and opportunities, on how categorizations, structures, and terms used to describe literary works have been defined for women, and the ways in which women writers have responded to these definitions. The volume begins with a feminist history of French literature and concludes with a selected, general bibliography and a chronology of women writers.
