Book Scottish Life and Society Bibliography for Scottish ethnology

Download or read book Scottish Life and Society Bibliography for Scottish ethnology written by Alexander Fenton and published by John Donald. This book was released on 2000 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major project comprises fourteen thematically arranged volumes. The aim of the Compendium is to examine the interlocking strands of history and traditional culture that go into the making of a national identity, in an up-to-date synthesis of the current state of knowledge. By bringing together information from a variety of sources, the Compendium not only provides a digest of topics, but also points towards areas for new investigation. The Compendium concentrates upon the present and the historical period and does not generally deal with prehistory, although for certain themes, such as the development of agriculture and buildings, early evidence is taken into account. Where appropriate, reference is made to foreign parallels and to the influence on Scotland of the cultures of neighbouring peoples. Scottish influence on the world at large is also taken into account, whether in relation to urban or rural, maritime or land-based topics. Material and non-material aspects of history and tradition are considered equally, at all levels of society, indeed oftentimes focusing on the interaction between people of differing social strata

Book The Scottish Miners 1874 1939

Download or read book The Scottish Miners 1874 1939 written by Alan Campbell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scottish miners experienced enormous changes during these sixty-five years. Enjoying a high degree of autonomy underground throughout the nineteenth century, their work situation was transformed in the twentieth as Scotland became the most intensively mechanised of the British coalfields. Grievances generated by this change led to strike rates in Scotland being up to ten and fifteen times higher than in the major English coalfields. Such militancy displayed considerable geographical variation however, and the translation of grievances into industrial conflict was mediated by variables rooted in the community as well as the pit. A central theme of this volume is to explore the differences between the four principal mining regions in Scotland through the detailed study of ten localities within them. This innovative, two-tiered comparison is used to analyse the competing loyalties of class, gender and ethnicity, to map the uneven terrain of popular protest and social disorder, and to challenge traditional stereotypes of ’a peaceable kingdom’. This historical sociology of the Scottish coalfields frames the analysis of trade unionism and politics which is developed in the companion volume to this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects seventeen previously published essays by John Armstrong concerning the British coastal trade. Armstrong is a leading maritime historian and the essays provided here offer a thorough exploration of the British coastal trade, his specialisation, during the period of industrialisation and technological development that would lead to modern shipping. The purpose is to demonstrate the whether or not the coastal trade was the main carrier of internal trade and a pioneer of the technical developments that modernised the shipping industry. Each essay makes an original contribution to the field and covers a broad range of topics, including the fluctuating importance of the coastal trade and size of the coastal fleet over time; the relationship between coastal shipping, canals, and railways; a comparison between the coastal liner and coastal tramp trade; the significance of the river Thames in enabling trade; coastal trade economics; maritime freight rates; the early twentieth century shipping depression; competition between coastal liner companies; and a detailed study of the role of the government in coastal shipping. The book also contains case studies of the London coal trade; coastal trade through the River Dee port; and the Liverpool-Hull trade route. It contains a foreword, introduction, and bibliography of Armstrong’s writings. There is no overall conclusion, except the assertion that coastal shipping plays a tremendous role in British maritime history, and a call for further research into the field.

  • Pages : 490 pages

Download or read book Scotland written by Dennis Smith and published by Oxford, England : Clio Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scotland is probably the only sovereign nation to have chosen, in a more or less free vote, to surrender its independence in order to merge with a larger, more powerful, neighbour. For most of the period since the Union of 1707 the Scots were enthusiastic partners with England in creating and administering the British Empire. Inevitably, therefore, the end of empire caused an identity crisis in Scotland. For more than a Century pressure for political home rule produced no tangible result; however, the decisive vote in favour of devolution in the referendum of September 1997 means that a restored Scottish Parliament is now likely to be in place by the millennium. Irrespective of political developments, the last two decades have seen a renaissance in Scottish culture and historiography. This bibliography fully reflects the wealth of new developments in Scottish life and culture over the past twenty years and the new vibrancy of Scottish publishing.
