Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictionary of Organs and Organists For this we have to thank primarily the innumerable Organists throughout the Kingdom who have supplied information for inclusion in the book, but this foreword would be incomplete without an acknowledgment of our ih debtedness to the Federation of Master Organ Builders for the valued assist ance it has afforded in compiling and verifying as far as possible the particulars of organs included in Part II. The interest evinced by the Federation has enabled us to include particulars of numerous organs which would not other wise have been obtainable, for all of which we take this opportunity of expressing our sincere appreciation to this organization. We desire also to convey our thanks to all who have in any way helped to bring this edition to a successful issue, and not the least those authors whose painstaking labours are evidenced in tangible form in the articles contained in Part which, we venture to think, will form a valuable addition to the Bibliography of the Organ. A considerable amount of time has, of necessity, elapsed during the compilation of such a comprehensive work, and, despite the safeguards adopted to eliminate errors, both of omission and commission, it is certain that, even as the book leaves the press, some few records will be out of date. We feel sure, however, that our readers will not hastily condemn the book on this score, but will rather judge the work as a whole, and if some inaccuracies are found, will, as in the past, lend us their valued co-operation in correcting the information in our hands, as well as by keeping us advised of changes of interest as such occur. Not only will such co-operation be most welcome, but will enable us to make of still more interest to all lovers of the King of Instruments our Dictionary of Organs 6' Organists, the Second Edition of which we herewith submit to the appreciation of our readers. Excerpt: ... dictionary of the organ A Accentcoppel. See Electro-pneumatic. Acoustic Phenomena. See Subbass. Acoustic Tones. See Quint. Acuta. See Sharp and Mixture. jiEoline derives its name from the iEolian Harp. (A charming description of this ancient instrument is to be found in Radau's Theory of Sound.) It is of soft, string-toned character, and is found in nearly all large as well as small new organs as an 8' solo stop. It is regarded as the softest of string-toned stops. It is met with in the Passau Cathedral organ as.Eolian Harp 4'. The pipes of the Eoline are properly of tin; but as the art of organ-building to-day is capable of making the transition from wood to metal imperceptible, the lower notes of this and of some other stops may be constructed of wood, especially where cost is a consideration, provided this is expressly stipulated for in the contract. Arbitrary changes in the materials should not, however, be tolerated. This stop is also met with, at times, as an 8' or 16' reed (see Topfer, Orgelbaukunst, vol. i., 180), either like the Physharmonica or surmounted by a small bell. I found in the large Cathedral organ at Riga (Walcker) an iElodicon 16', closely related to the Eoline, as a reed stop on the 2nd manual, and the above-described iEoline as a flue stop on the 4th manual. This stop is now found so frequently in this character, that it would be superfluous to cite further instances of its appearance. I found a 16' Eoline as a reed stop on the 3rd manual of the new organ at The Hague. The iEoline blends well with the Voix celeste (q.v.), which is tuned slightly sharper; also with the Wienerflote and Lieblich-Gedackt. One can advantageously add to this combination the more incisive character of a Flauto Traverso or of a...

Book British Organ Music of the Twentieth Century

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length survey of 20th -century British music for solo organ. Beginning with a discussion of British organ music in the last decades of the Victorian era, the book focuses on the pieces that the composers wrote, their musical style, possible influences on the composition of specific works, and the details of their composition. Arranged in chronological order according to date of birth are detailed studies on important composers that made especially significant contributions to organ music including Parry, Stanford, Healey Willan, Herbert Howells, Percy Whitlock, Francis Jackson, Peter Racine Fricker, Arthur Wills, and Kenneth Leighton. Composers' biographies, the role of organs and organ building developments, influential political and sociological events, and aesthetic aspects of British musical life are also discussed in detail. In the concluding chapter, the author discusses the major phases and achievements of the century and gauges what may lie ahead in the new millennium. A comprehensive Catalog of Works provides titles of works, dates of composition, details of publishers, and the dates of publication. More than 60 music examples, 12 black and white photos, and an up-to-date bibliography are included.
