With a dash of humour from an established author, the Dictionary of French Tools & Materials demystifies the choice of what's available, exposing the oddities and inconsistencies - and highlights items that don't exist in the UK. A dictionary of more than 10,000 French terms translated into English, including hundreds of technical words you won't find in a standard dictionary. Entries divided into the main categories that cover all aspects of home renovation: Building, Carpentry & Joinery, Decorating, Electricity, Ironmongery & Hardware, Metalwork, and Plumbing & Heating. Book Dictionary of Louisiana French

Download or read book Dictionary of Louisiana French written by Albert Valdman and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Louisiana French (DLF) provides the richest inventory of French vocabulary in Louisiana and reflects precisely the speech of the period from 1930 to the present. This dictionary describes the current usage of French-speaking peoples in the five broad regions of South Louisiana: the coastal marshes, the banks of the Mississippi River, the central area, the north, and the western prairie. Data were collected during interviews from at least five persons in each of twenty-four areas in these regions. In addition to the data collected from fieldwork, the dictionary contains material compiled from existing lexical inventories, from texts published after 1930, and from archival recordings. The new authoritative resource, the DLF not only contains the largest number of words and expressions but also provides the most complete information available for each entry. Entries include the word in the conventional French spelling, the pronunciation (including attested variants), the part of speech classification, the English equivalent, and the word's use in common phrases. The DLF features a wealth of illustrative examples derived from fieldwork and textual sources and identification of the parish where the entry was collected or the source from which it was compiled. An English-to-Louisiana French index enables readers to find out how particular notions would be expressed in la Louisiane .

Book Elsevier s Dictionary of Building Tools and Materials

Download or read book Elsevier s Dictionary of Building Tools and Materials written by L.Y. Chaballe and published by . This book was released on 1982-06 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology has transformed many traditional building materials and new building materials have been introduced by innovative manufacturers, for example, light-weight bricks, double-glazing, light-alloy framings, special concrete compounds, etc. Totally new items have appeared on the market, many of them with new insulating and weather-resistant qualities. These new materials have required new fixing and fastening techniques, such as glues and bolts, which in turn has led to the development of specially designed tools. The aim of this dictionary is to facilitate communication between those contributing, directly or indirectly, to building activities on whatever scale - architects, designers, engineers, technical site supervisors, civil servants in charge of public works, manufacturers of materials, tools and site equipment, translators and interpreters. Special attention is devoted to such areas as: tools, site equipment; materials, such as natural stone, ceramic products, mortar, cement, concrete, metals, glass, wood plastics, plasters, glues and paints; elements used for the building of floors, roofs, stairs, doors, windows, shutters, chimneys; heating and lighting; fastening and fixing accessories; prefabricated elements.

Book Dictionary of Civil Engineering

Download or read book Dictionary of Civil Engineering written by Jean-Paul Kurtz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 1520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am pleased to present a work which marks a milestone in the history of public works and, more precisely, in that of permanent structures—a comprehensive dictionary of Civil Engineering terms. Since the beginning of time, Man has always tried to find a means to clear the obstacles which nature erected to displace him. With the first tree trunk thrown across a river, man sought to improve the crossing structure. After the invention of the wheel, and to satisfy his thirst for conquest (Roman ways), and comfort (aqueducts), man built bridges that became a preremptory necessity to move quickly. Thus, Man started to build wooden and masonry works. With the passing centuries, the builders became masters in the art of building masonry works. Then came the Industrial Revolution and the advent of the steel (1864), which was closely followed by the invention of the reinforced concrete (1855). The need for railways and improving the road network inspired great works of crossing such as viaducts and tunnels. The boom of the railway network and the development of the car required the construction of an increasing number of new structures. This phenomenon continues today with hundreds of structures built each year throughout the world.
