Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of Explosives IN the following pages I propose to set forth a Dictionary Of Explosives, which comprises all those which have, to my knowledge, been used or proposed to be used. The list includes a good many which are obviously unfit for practical purposes, and some which are merely curiosities in a chemical sense. All, however, are given without distinction. Those which are, or have been, licensed for use in the United Kingdom will be specially noted as authorised explosives, a term which signifies that they are, or have been, authorised to be manufactured for general sale or imported for general sale. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictionary of Explosives In France and Belgium also the compositions of the coal mine explosives are published, but in Germany, as a rule, only a list of the constituents is given, and sometimes an upper or lower limit for one or more of the principal constituents. Moreover, it is not stated explicitly whether the explosives are intended for use in coal mines or for general blasting purposes. In the United States of America, explosives in tended for use in coal mines are examined by the Bureau of Mines, which, however, has no power to prevent the use of others because regulations on this matter are made by the individual states. If they pass they are placed on the list of Permissible Explosives. The compositions are not published, but the class of composition is stated. Until the second half of the nineteenth century, gunpowder was practically the only explosive used on a considerable scale, and it was employed for all purposes. Consequently it does not fall into any of the classes mentioned, or rather it could be placed in several of them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual on Explosives It remained, however, for the German monk Schwarz to first utilize this explosive mixture as a propellant to throw a mass of stone or iron through the air in a more efficient manner than had been possible with the purely mechanical means formerly employed, such as the catapult and the crossbow. Schwarz's invention of firearms is now generally concluded to have taken place about the year 1313, and shortly afterwards, in the reign of Edward 111, we find in the accounts of the -royal Household items relating to the purchase of sulphur and saltpetre for the guns, and it is a further established fact that guns or bombards, _ as they were then called, were used by the English at the Battle of Cre in the year 1346. From that time onwards. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Explosives The early uses of gunpowder were confined to warfare, and no use seems to have been made of it for blasting purposes for several hundred years. It was originally used in the form of crude hand grenades, and probably was at first of most use in striking terror into the enemy. Cannon were first used by the English in I 346 at the battle of Crecy. But seem to have been used a few years prior to this in the hispano-moorish wars.
