Book A Dictionary of Explosives Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Dictionary of Explosives Classic Reprint written by J. P. Cundill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of Explosives IN the following pages I propose to set forth a Dictionary Of Explosives, which comprises all those which have, to my knowledge, been used or proposed to be used. The list includes a good many which are obviously unfit for practical purposes, and some which are merely curiosities in a chemical sense. All, however, are given without distinction. Those which are, or have been, licensed for use in the United Kingdom will be specially noted as authorised explosives, a term which signifies that they are, or have been, authorised to be manufactured for general sale or imported for general sale. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictionary of Explosives In France and Belgium also the compositions of the coal mine explosives are published, but in Germany, as a rule, only a list of the constituents is given, and sometimes an upper or lower limit for one or more of the principal constituents. Moreover, it is not stated explicitly whether the explosives are intended for use in coal mines or for general blasting purposes. In the United States of America, explosives in tended for use in coal mines are examined by the Bureau of Mines, which, however, has no power to prevent the use of others because regulations on this matter are made by the individual states. If they pass they are placed on the list of Permissible Explosives. The compositions are not published, but the class of composition is stated. Until the second half of the nineteenth century, gunpowder was practically the only explosive used on a considerable scale, and it was employed for all purposes. Consequently it does not fall into any of the classes mentioned, or rather it could be placed in several of them. Book excerpt: This world-famous work has been enlarged and updated without tampering with its tried and tested format. Around 500 alphabetically ordered, monographic entries consider the physicochemical properties, production methods and safe applications of over 120 explosive chemicals, while discussing 70 fuels, additives and oxidizing agents and describing the relevant test methods. The extensive thermodynamic data has been thoroughly updated and now also provided on a CD-ROM compiled by the Fraunhofer Institute of Chemical Technology. This excerpt from the ICT Thermodynamical Database not only includes additional thermodynamic data, and references to further reading, but also features enhanced search facilities. Other key features include a 1,500-entry combined index and glossary with terms and abbreviations in English, French and German, conversion tables and numerous literature references. A handy reference for explosive experts and also for translators, public authorities and patent lawyers. From reviews of previous editions: '... This wealth of information and an index that comprises some 1500 keywords and several conversion tables make this a unique source of knowledge for anybody working with explosives.'
