Book The Contemporary Printed Literature of the English Counter Reformation between 1558 and 1640

Download or read book The Contemporary Printed Literature of the English Counter Reformation between 1558 and 1640 written by A.F. Allison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an annotated bibliography of Catholic books in English printed abroad or secretly in England at a time when Catholic printing was prohibited in England and such books, when discovered by the authorities, were seized and destroyed. It includes all the 930 items listed in the authors' A Catalogue of Catholic Books in English..., 1956 (A&R) except for a handful which, for reasons of consistency, were described in volume I of the present work (Scolar Press, 1989), and it adds a further twenty-five on which information has come to light more recently. The annotations, historical, literary and bibliographical, are very much fuller than those in A&R and include a vast amount of evidence now brought together for the first time. The true authors of many anonymous and pseudonymous books are identified and many books issued with a false imprint, or no imprint at all, are assigned to particular presses. In each entry, up to fifteen locations are given where known. A concordance links the entries with those in A&R to facilitate cross-reference from one to the other, and indexes of titles, printers and publishers, and persons (including foreign authors) mentioned in the text are provided. The volume concludes with a short list of Addenda and Corrigenda to volume I.

Book Scholasticism

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 1998-05-28
  • ISBN : 0791498239
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Scholasticism written by Jose Ignacio Cabezon and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1998-05-28 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading religious studies scholars join forces in this book to show that scholasticism as a comparative category is a useful tool in the analysis of a variety of religious and philosophical traditions, and even in the task of cultural criticism. The discussions range from explorations of Latin, Jewish, and Muslim modes of scholastic thought to examinations of their counterparts in India, Tibet, China, and contemporary Euro-American academic culture. The contributors consider the heterogeneous nature of traditions generally, and of scholastic traditions in particular, by demonstrating the rich, internal texture that is the result of the historical interaction of different religious and philosophical schools. They also explore what it means to construct a comparative category like scholasticism by applying it sensitively and dialogically to a variety of religious and intellectual movements across cultures. Focusing thematically on scholasticism, the book offers detailed reflections regarding its relevance to a variety of traditions (Hindu, Confucian, Taoist, Buddhist, Jewish, Islamic, and Christian). But while grounded in the rich, historical particularity of these various religions and cultures, the volume also makes a considerable contribution to theory. The contributors are committed to a form of analysis that balances "similarities" with "differences," one that also does not disregard either the diachronic element or the relevance of the social-material evidence. By offering a nuanced and sophisticated treatment of the problematics of constructing a comparative category like scholasticism, this volume represents a major contribution to the comparative philosophy of religion. With its breadth of scope and its richness of both historical detail and theoretical insight, the book will interest a wide audience ranging from medievalists to historians of religion, from philosophers to cultural critics.

Book Italian Literature before 1900 in English Translation

Download or read book Italian Literature before 1900 in English Translation written by Robin Healey and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 1185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italian Literature before 1900 in English Translation provides the most complete record possible of texts from the early periods that have been translated into English, and published between 1929 and 2008. It lists works from all genres and subjects, and includes translations wherever they have appeared across the globe. In this annotated bibliography, Robin Healey covers over 5,200 distinct editions of pre-1900 Italian writings. Most entries are accompanied by useful notes providing information on authors, works, translators, and how the translations were received. Among the works by over 1,500 authors represented in this volume are hundreds of editions by Italy's most translated authors – Dante Alighieri, Machiavelli, and Boccaccio – and other hundreds which represent the author's only English translation. A significant number of entries describe works originally published in Latin. Together with Healey's Twentieth-Century Italian Literature in English Translation, this volume makes comprehensive information on translations accessible for schools, libraries, and those interested in comparative literature.

Book The Western Christian Presence in the Russias and Q j r Persia c 1760 c 1870

Download or read book The Western Christian Presence in the Russias and Q j r Persia c 1760 c 1870 written by Thomas O'Flynn and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 1141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of The 2018 Saidi-Sirjani Book Award In The Western Christian Presence in the Russias and Qājār Persia, c.1760–c.1870, Thomas O'Flynn vividly paints the life and times of missionary enterprises in early nineteenth-century Russia and Persia at a moment of immense change when Tsarist Russia embarked on an expansionist campaign reaching to the Caucasus. Simultaneously he charts the relationship between the new Persian dynasty of the Qājārs and missionary activity on the part of European and American missionaries. This book reconstructs that world from a predominantly religious perspective. It recounts the sustaining ideals as well as the everyday struggles of the western missionaries, Protestant (Scottish, Basel and American Congregationalist) and Catholic (Jesuit and Vincentian). It looks at the reactions of diverse tribal peoples, the Tatars of the North Caucasus, the Kabardians and Circassians. Persia was the ultimate goal of these missionaries, which they eventually reached in the 1820s. Altogether this study throws light on the troubled course of history in West Asia and provides the background to politico-religious conflicts in Chechnya and Persia that persist to the present day.

Book Pedro P ez s History of Ethiopia 1622

Book The Mystery Beyond Human Development

Download or read book The Mystery Beyond Human Development written by George Farahat and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2020-06-29 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will fascinate the reader as the author shares his own true story since his childbirth in Egypt, his growth, passions, sufferings and hopes and that of many others he knew. The book brings to light the relational character of the cosmos and all life it contains, as a reflection of the Mystery of God who is Love. Based on the historical development of thought and science as well as recent research, the author argues that humanity is destined for the Second Coming of Christ, the Alpha and Omega. Based on the development of civilizations the book illustrates violence, vengeance, greed, passion, fear, security, collaboration, love, and success as examples from history of individuals as well as cultures. The premise of the book is that humans by nature are relational. Since early civilizations, collaboration and reciprocity between tribes led to trade and thus learning developed in many centers. But knowledge is not only intellectual. Knowledge is completed in the love of the other which is pervasive in human thought and relations. The conclusion proposes imitation of love, the love shown in the life and teachings of Christ, even if hard, in order to live eternal life.
