Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection provides an excellent introduction to three of the most important names in twentieth-century Spanish philosophy: Miguel de Unamuno (1864–1936), José Ortega y Gasset (1883–1955), and José Ferrater Mora (1912–1991). The thought-provoking work of these great contemporary philosophers offers a rich and penetrating insight into human existence. Originally written by Ferrater Mora in the middle of the last century, his interpretations of Unamuno and Ortega are considered classics, and the chapter on his own thought reflects his mature thinking about being and death. Each essay is introduced by noted Ferrater Mora scholar J. M. Terricabras and contains updated biographical and bibliographic information.

Book Building a Nation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Juan Carlos Mercado
  • Publisher : University Press of America
  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN : 9780761801146
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Building a Nation written by Juan Carlos Mercado and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1996 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the only one of its kind on the market. It deals with one of the most brilliant yet least known Latin American authors, Esteban EcheverrÌa. EcheverrÌa was the author of La Cautiva (The Captive), El Matadero (The Slaughterhouse), and Dogma Socialista (Socialist Dogma) which formed the base of the constitution of the Republic of Argentina. In Building A Nation, Juan Carlos Mercado recovers the figure of EcheverrÌa through an analysis centralized in his work as a poet, thinker, and politician--all as one unit. The study takes into account the many sources, including European ones, that EcheverrÌa used in order to formulate a literary and political national project. Readers of this work will acquire a thorough understanding of the significance of EcheverrÌa's influence--from the introduction of European Romanticism into Argentine Literature; to the initiation of a critical and realistic narrative style never yet seen before in Argentina; to the founding of a liberal-humanist tendency which went on to acquire definitive political shape for the country.

Book Resisting Categories Latin American and or Latino

Download or read book Resisting Categories Latin American and or Latino written by Mari Carmen Ramirez and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-24 with total page 1184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIV This first volume of the Critical Documents of 20th-Century Latin American and Latino Art series published by the International Center for the Arts of the Americas at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, presents 168 crucial texts written by influential artists, critics, curators, journalists, and intellectuals whose writings shed light on questions relating to what it means to be "Latin American" and/or "Latino." Reinforced within a critical framework, the documents address converging issues, including: the construct of "Latin-ness" itself; the persistent longing for a continental identity; notions of Pan–Latin Americanism; the emergence of collections and exhibitions devoted specifically to "Latin American” or "Latino" art; and multicultural critiques of Latin American and Latino essentialism. The selected documents, many of which have never before been published in English, span from the late fifteenth century to the present day. They encompass key protagonists of this comprehensive history as well as unfamiliar figures, revealing previously unknown facets of the questions and issues at play. The book series complements the thousands of seminal documents now available through the ICAA Documents of 20th-Century Latin American and Latino Art digital archive, http://icaadocs.mfah.org. Together they establish a much-needed intellectual foundation for the exhibition, collection, and interpretation of art produced in Latin America and among Latino populations in the United States. /div

Book Political Communication and Leadership

Download or read book Political Communication and Leadership written by Elena Block and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-lasting hegemonic rule of President Hugo Chávez not only involved significant rearrangements in the control of political power in Venezuela but also shifts in the way its citizens constructed, connected and interacted with politics. In this book, Elena Block explores the political communication style developed by Chávez to transmit his ideologies and engage with his publics — A style that unfolded incrementally between 1998, the year of his first presidential campaign, and March 13th 2013 when his death was announced after a long struggle with cancer. What sort of political communication did Hugo Chávez develop to establish hegemony in Venezuela? What made him so popular? Block argues that Chávez’s political communication style can be better understood through the concept of mimetisation, a systematic sequence of communicational events and practices whereby the Venezuelan President managed to build a bond with his constituents. Applying a mixed qualitative method of collection and analysis of relevant data, this phenomenon is examined via the President’s emotional use of common cultural symbols; dramatized and informalised language; savvy use of communication and media, and boost of inclusive, compensatory, and participatory practices in which his constituents not only felt mimetically mirrored, but also endowed with an identity. Shedding new light on contemporary theories of populism from the perspective of political communication and identity construction, the notion of mimetisation can be adjusted and applied to study the links of populist phenomena, the mediatisation of politics and government, cultural appeal and identity politics in other cultures and situations in contemporary times.

Book Queer Events

  • Author : David Vilaseca
  • Publisher : Liverpool University Press
  • Release : 2010-01-01
  • ISBN : 1846314674
  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book Queer Events written by David Vilaseca and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queer Events offers radical new rereadings of crucial texts from the era of the Spanish transition to democracy. From Terenci Moix to Vicente Aranda, most of the major writers and filmmakers of the time are found here but David Vilaseca also addresses many who deserve to be better known, including Antonio Roig, controversial scholar Alberto Cardín, and the directors of the short-lived yet vital film movement known as the Barcelona School. Drawing on queer theory and the philosophies of Badiou, Agamben, and Deleuze, Queer Events reconceptualizes a complex period in Spanish history characterized by discomfort with the past and deep ideological conflict with the present.
