Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christ versus Arizona turns on the events in 1881 that surrounded the shootout at the OK Corral, where Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and Virgil and Morgan Earp fought the Clantons and the McLaurys. Set against a backdrop of an Arizona influenced by the Mexican Revolution and the westward expansion of the United States, the story is a bravura performance by the 1989 Nobel Prize-winning author. A monologue by the naive, unreliable, and uneducated Wendell L. Espana, the book weaves together hundreds of characters and a torrent of interconnected anecdotes, some true, some fabricated. Wendell s story is a document of the vast array of ills that welcomed the dawning of the twentieth century, ills that continue to shape our world in the new millennium."

Download or read book Journey to the Alcarria written by Camilo José Cela and published by Atlantic Monthly Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Awarded the 1989 Nobel Prize for Literature, Camilo José Cela has long been recognized as one of the preeminent Spanish writers of the twentieth century. Journey to the Alcarria is the best known of his vagabundajes, Cela's term for his books of travels, sketchbooks of regions or provinces. The Alcarria is a territory in New Castile, northeast of Madrid, surrounding most of the Guadalajara province. The region is high, rocky, and dry, and is famous for its honey. Cela himself is "the traveler," an urban intellectual wandering from village to village, through farms and along country roads, in search of the Spanish character. Cela relishes his encounters with the simple, honest people of the Spanish countryside--the blushing maid in the tavern, the small-town shopkeeper with airs of grandeur lonely for companionship, the old peasant with his donkey who freely shares his bread and blanket with the stranger. These vignettes are narrated in a fresh, clear prose that is wonderfully evocative. As the New York Times wrote, Cela is "an outspoken observer of human life who built his reputation on portraying what he observed in a direct colloquial style."

Book I Think I Am a Verb

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-11-11

Download or read book I Think I Am a Verb written by Thomas A. Sebeok and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My writing career has been, at least in this one respect, idiosyncratic: it had to mark and chart, step by step, its own peculiar champaign. My earliest papers, beginning in 1942, were technical articles in this or that domain of Uralic linguistics, ethnography, and folklore, with a sprinkling of contributions to North and South American linguistics. In 1954, my name became fecklessly associated with psycholinguistics, then, successively, with explorations in my thology, religious studies, and stylistic problems. It now takes special effort for me to even revive the circumstances under which I came to publish, in 1955, a hefty tome on the supernatural, another, in 1958, on games, and yet another, in 1961, utilizing a computer for extensive sorting of literary information. By 1962, I had edged my way into animal communication studies. Two years after that, I first whiffled through what Gavin Ewart evocatively called "the tulgey wood of semiotics." In 1966, I published three books which tem porarily bluffed some of my friends into conjecturing that I was about to meta morphose into a historiographer of linguistics. The topmost layer in my scholarly stratification dates from 1976, when I started to compile what eventually became my "semiotic tetralogy," of which this volume may supposably be the last. In the language of "Jabberwocky," the word "tulgey" is said to connote variability and evasiveness. This notwithstanding, the allusion seems to me apt.

Book excerpt: Semiotics is rapidly establishing itself as one of the most fruitful and exciting fields of intellectual inquiry. Literary scholars, philosophers, social scientists, and students of linguistics and communication are all finding something of value in the various insights and approaches to knowledge that are included within the general field of semiotics. This significant new collection contains some of the most important contemporary work by modern pioneers in the field together with a few formative statements from earlier thinkers such as John Locke and Jacques Maritain. The volume covers in five parts the nature of semiotics, semiotic systems, various developing themes, traditional concerns of semiotics, and future directions.

Book In Praise of the Stepmother

Download or read book In Praise of the Stepmother written by Mario Vargas Llosa and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With meticulous observation and the seductive skill of a great storyteller, Vargas Llosa lures the reader into the shadow of perversion that, little by little, darkens the extraordinary happiness and harmony of his characters. The mysterious nature of happiness and above all, the corrupting power of innocence are the themes that underlie these pages, and the author has perfectly met the demands of the erotic novel, never dimming for an instant the fine poetic polish of his writing.

Book American Signatures

Download or read book American Signatures written by Thomas Albert Sebeok and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this series of new and reprinted essays, Sebeok, a pivotal figure in American semiotics, assesses major contributions to semiotics theory, method and practice in America, including the seminal ideas of Charles Sanders Peirce, Charles Morris and other Americans whose ideas coalesced and built upon each other to produce the discipline of semiotics known today. He also illuminates the work of such emigre scholars as Roman Jakobson, Ernst Cassirer and Jacques Maritain, who combine Sausurean linguistics with the work of these Americans, turning the study of semiotics in new directions. Book Augustine Poinsot

Download or read book Augustine Poinsot written by John N. Deely and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Saint Augustine has been a household name for centuries, the same cannot be said of long-overlooked philosopher John Poinsot (1589-1644). But in Augustine and Poinsot, John Deely contends that the history of semiotics cannot be conceived of without Poinsot's landmark contribution. According to Deely, even though Augustine was the first to describe what the sign does, Poinsot was the first to show how the sign mediates between nature and culture. This revolutionary volume demonstrates how Poinsot's account of semiotics allows us to produce human knowledge and experience.
