Book Diary of Thomas Bellinghaman Officer Under William III

Download or read book Diary of Thomas Bellinghaman Officer Under William III written by Anthony Hewitson and published by . This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Glorious Revolution which displaced the Catholic and increasingly tyrannical James II with William of Orange and James's Protestant daughter Mary is an epochal event in English history. This diary is a very valuable insider's account. It's author, Col. Thomas Bellingham, was a professional soldier who served in the Army of William of Orange after the latter deposed King James and became King William III. The period covered by this diary is a little over a year - August 1688 to September 1690 - but that dramatic period encompassed the Battle of the Boyne in July 1690 at which William's army decisively defeated that of James on the RIver Boyne in Ireland. The Colonel's diary, incidentally, is one of the chief sources of the great historian Lord Macaulay in his account of the battle in his 'History of England'. Apart from its military interest, the diary gives a fascinating insight into the social life of a turn-of-the 17th/18th century English officer and gent.

Book The Diaries of Anthony Hewitson Provincial Journalist Volume 1

Download or read book The Diaries of Anthony Hewitson Provincial Journalist Volume 1 written by Andrew Hobbs and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2022-09-26 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthony Hewitson (1836-1912) was a typical Victorian journalist, working in one of the largest sectors of the periodical press, provincial newspapers. His diaries, written between 1862 and 1912, lift the veil of anonymity hiding the people, processes and networks involved in the creation of Victorian newspapers. They also tell us about Victorian fatherhood, family life, and the culture of a Victorian town. Diaries of nineteenth-century provincial journalists are extremely rare. Anthony Hewitson went from printer’s apprentice to newspaper reporter and eventually editor of his own paper. Every night he jotted down the day’s doings, his thoughts and feelings. The diaries are a lively account of the reporter’s daily round, covering meetings and court cases, hunting for gossip or attending public executions and variety shows, in and around Preston, Lancashire. Andrew Hobbs’s introduction and footnotes provide background and analysis of these valuable documents. This full scholarly edition offers a wealth of new information about reporting, freelancing, sub-editing, newspaper ownership and publishing, and illuminates aspects of Victorian periodicals and culture extending far beyond provincial newspapers. The Diaries of Anthony Hewitson, Provincial Journalist are an indispensable research tool for local and regional historians, as well as social and political historians with an interest in Victorian studies and the media. They are also illuminating for anyone interested in nineteenth-century social and cultural history.

Download or read book Battle of Aughrim 1691 written by Michael McNally and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2008-11-17 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over 60,000 combatants, the Battle of the Boyne, which took place on 1 July 1690 was the largest battle ever fought on Irish soil, and has long been regarded as the pivotal event of the Williamite War. But despite the Boyne's celebrated place in Irish protestant folklore, the critical engagement of the campaign was to take place the following year outside the village of Aughrim, in County Galway. Here the outnumbered and outgunned Jacobites, their backs to the wall, faced the Williamite army in a battle that was to decide the course of Irish, and indeed European history. In the first major history of the battle in forty years, Michael McNally brings vividly to life the personalities and events of the bloodiest day in Irish history. Placing the battle firmly in the context of the wider campaign, and of early modern European power politics, he uses evocative eyewitness testimony to reconstruct the events of that fateful encounter, and reveal just how close to defeat the Williamites came.

Book War Religion and Service

Download or read book War Religion and Service written by Matthew Glozier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Glorious Revolution of 1688 Huguenot soldiers were at the forefront of William of Orange's army. Their role was an important one and they are, with justification, best remembered for this act among British historians and the public alike. Yet Huguenot soldiering existed long before this event, and French Protestants and their descendants featured prominently in European armies long afterwards. This volume is the first attempt to bring together in a scholarly study essays treating the Huguenots as soldiers in Europe and globally. Their story is often fascinating and sometimes poignant as they aided international Protestantism against Catholic foes across Europe and in the New World, while remaining 'under the cross' in their homeland of France. The book is divided into three sections, the first analysing the period prior to the 1685 Revocation of the Edict of Nantes which sealed their fate in France. Their role as mercenaries and freedom fighters receives attention, as does the complex political motivation that underscored their involvements abroad in the pre-Revocation era. Chapters examine the Huguenot rationale for foreign service and the dynamics of the Protestant international of which they were such a prominent part. Their role in European armies after that date is covered in the second section of the volume with a number of expert studies of Huguenot refugees in the armies of Britain, the Netherlands and Russia. A third section treats the Huguenot legacy, focusing on the aging generation of refugees and their descendants' contributions to the countries of their adoption. This book contains studies of the Huguenots serving in armies in various countries, and examines the lives and actions of a number of individual French refugee commanders who led armies consisting of their compatriots. By combining biographical studies of eminent figures with broader considerations of group experience, the volume presents a wide-ranging and thought provoking collection of material, making this the first study of its kind to consistently treat the military contribution made by the Huguenots to Europe at the high point of their importance as a historical group.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though James II is often depicted as a Catholic despot who imposed his faith, Scott Sowerby reveals a king ahead of his time who pressed for religious toleration at the expense of his throne. The Glorious Revolution was in fact a conservative counter-revolution against the movement for enlightened reform that James himself encouraged and sustained.
