Book Through No Fault of My Own

Download or read book Through No Fault of My Own written by Coco Irvine and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2013-11-30 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Christmas Day, 1926, twelve-year-old Clotilde “Coco” Irvine received a blank diary as a present. Coco loved to write—and to get into scrapes—and her new diary gave her the opportunity to explain her side of the messes she created: “I’m in deep trouble through no fault of my own,” her entries frequently began. The daughter of a lumber baron, Coco grew up in a twenty-room mansion on fashionable Summit Avenue at the peak of the Jazz Age, a time when music, art, and women’s social status were all in a state of flux and the economy was still flying high. Coco’s diary carefully records her adventures, problems, and romances, written with a lively wit and a droll sense of humor. Whether sneaking out to a dance hall in her mother’s clothes or getting in trouble for telling an off-color joke, Coco and her escapades will captivate and delight preteen readers as well as their mothers and grandmothers. Peg Meier’s introduction describes St. Paul life in the 1920s and provides context for the privileged world that Coco inhabits, while an afterword tells what happens to Coco as an adult—and reveals surprises about some of the other characters in the diary.

Book Diary of a Heartbreak Kid

Download or read book Diary of a Heartbreak Kid written by Craig Tello and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-12-27 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s the week of WrestleMania, an event that’s flourished in parallel with Shawn Michaels’s decorated career, an annual spectacular that The Heartbreak Kid seized time after time as his personal stage of excellence. Such a grand setting could not be more appropriate for WWE’s one and only Showstopper to add “Mr. Hall of Fame” to his myriad monikers. From his debut in 1984 to his final WWE match in 2010, the world has seen Michaels allure audiences and perform like no other entertainer in history. But that’s inside the ring. What if you could walk beside the incomparable Heartbreak Kid outside the squared circle, beyond the curtain, and spend four days with the man living a boyhood dream? Diary of a Heartbreak Kid shadows Shawn Michaels for an immensely poignant occasion of reflection, introspection, and celebration as The Heartbreak Kid is inducted into the esteemed WWE Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 2, 2011. In a moment-to-moment narrative, Diary captures the raw emotions and unfiltered candor of The Heartbreak Kid as he’s reunited with family, friends, and a veritable who’s who of squared circle lore—Triple H, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Ric Flair, The Rock, Vince McMahon—all of whom have crossed and shaped Michaels’s path to the Hall of Fame. With his beautiful wife, two jubilant children, time tested faith, and nearly three decades of four-cornered memories, the retired Michaels steps back into the warmth of the limelight during the weekend of WWE’s grandest extravaganza to experience the greatest honor in sports-entertainment. And with Diary of a Heartbreak Kid, you’re riding shotgun.

Download or read book Child s Play written by Michael A. Messner and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2016-05 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is sport good for kids? When answering this question, both critics and advocates of youth sports tend to fixate on matters of health, whether condemning contact sports for their concussion risk or prescribing athletics as a cure for the childhood obesity epidemic. Child’s Play presents a more nuanced examination of the issue, considering not only the physical impacts of youth athletics, but its psychological and social ramifications as well. The eleven original scholarly essays in this collection provide a probing look into how sports—in community athletic leagues, in schools, and even on television—play a major role in how young people view themselves, shape their identities, and imagine their place in society. Rather than focusing exclusively on self-proclaimed jocks, the book considers how the culture of sports affects a wide variety of children and young people, including those who opt out of athletics. Not only does Child’s Play examine disparities across lines of race, class, and gender, it also offers detailed examinations of how various minority populations, from transgender youth to Muslim immigrant girls, have participated in youth sports. Taken together, these essays offer a wide range of approaches to understanding the sociology of youth sports, including data-driven analyses that examine national trends, as well as ethnographic research that gives a voice to individual kids. Child’s Play thus presents a comprehensive and compelling analysis of how, for better and for worse, the culture of sports is integral to the development of young people—and with them, the future of our society.
