Book excerpt: Diary of a Drug Fiend was Aleister Crowley's first published novel, and is also reportedly the earliest known reference to the Abbey of Thelema in Sicily. The story is widely thought to be based upon Crowley's own drug experiences, despite being written as a fiction. This seems almost conclusively confirmed by Crowley's statement in the novel's preface: "This is a true story. It has been rewritten only so far as was necessary to conceal personalities."

From his earliest days experimenting with "gateway drugs" to his spiraling descent, through every available illegal drug - into the hell of heroin addiction. He gets pushed by his addiction to heroin from a manageable addiction that he can control, through the loss of everything he owns and holds near and dear to his life. Heroin becomes his ever-present companion and over the years it turns him into a homeless, jobless heroin addict living under a downtown highway bridge. At his lowest, suicide seems to be the only way out, but when he finally hits rock bottom he realizes that in the mess, the muck and the blood that his life has become, salvation may still be possible. If only he can stay away from the needle and be as successful sober as he had been as a drug addict.

Book excerpt: Very few books have resulted in such controversy as "Diary of a Drug Fiend" since its original publication in 1922. While much of the debate is centered on the novel's author Aleister Crowley, the story itself has both enchanted and enraged audiences for nearly a century. Despite being a fictional work, Crowley drew from his own experiences as a heavy drug user for the context of the plot. Peter Pendragon and Louise Laleham, in a drug-induced night of passion, get married after meeting each other for the first time. During their honeymoon, they are introduced to heroin and cannot quit taking drugs. They end up in jail and are eventually return to England. Through the rest of their "honeymoon period", both Peter and Louise find themselves unable to give up their addictions. In their own sections of narration, they both exhibit the demented mindset of an addict, giving the text a visceral and realistic feel. Rather than overcoming their addictions, though, Crowley introduces his characters to the beginnings of his own religion, Thelema, which says that users can master their drug addiction and control the drugs' affects over themselves. Regardless of one's opinion of Aleister Crowley and his beliefs, "Diary of a Drug Fiend" is a truly modernistic and existential book that demands of its readers an understanding of the experiences and emotions of a drug addict. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a true-to-life tale both of and for our times, a story of ambition, of a fall from grace and ultimately of redemption. Katy Hendricks (pseudonym) was the all-American success story. From working class origins in small town Pennsylvania, Katy moved up the ladder to social and academic success in the big city. But behind the facade was an insecure young woman increasingly dependent on alcohol and cocaine. The pressures of academic overachieving exacted a cruel toll. The author tells us how she became addicted in her mid-twenties. She describes what it is like to be high and to overdose, her daily struggle to stay "clean" and the terrible nightmares she experienced during her first year of recovery. Her frank account makes a timely contribution to the current reevaluation of values and priorities.

Ben lost his battle against addiction and died when he was 34 as a result of medical withdrawal. His family decided to release the tapes in the hope that other families could benefit. The result was the highly acclaimed, award winning SKY documentary, 'Ben, Diary of a Heroin Addict' which was shown on national television 27 times and ultimately across the world. Ben's mother, Anne, received hundreds of letters and messages, not only from addicts but also from families saying that the documentary had helped them realise that they weren't alone. The film took Ben's mum to the Home Office, with interviews on national television, radio and the press. She has spoken with many young offenders desperate to educate other youngsters about addiction and to honour her son's wishes. The book includes writings and drawings by Ben which give a unique insight into the chaos surrounding drug addiction. His brother and sisters contribute too to the story of a family living on the edge. 'Ben, Diary of a Heroin Addict – A Mother's Fight' is both an attack against the government's tolerance of addiction and a powerful and moving depiction of one family's love.

It has been lightly edited with footnotes and original illustrations. "This is a true story. It has been rewritten only so far as was necessary to conceal personalities." Diary of a Drug Fiend, published in 1922, was the first novel by occultist and mystic Aleister Crowley. Despite being written as fiction, the story is believed to be based on Crowley's own experiences with drugs, especially with heroin. The plot concerns Sir Peter Pendragon, veteran pilot of World War One, who has recently come into a large inheritance, following the death of his uncle. During a night out he meets Lou Laleham, a devotee of occultist Basil, King Lamus. Pendragon and Laleham fall in love and begin a wild trip on cocaine and heroin during which they marry and travel throughout Europe, becoming seriously addicted to their drugs and indulging in decadence and destructive behavior. Diary of a Drug Fiend is the earliest known reference to the famous Abbey of Thelema. It contains much of Crowley's philosophy concerning Thelema and his conception of True Will.

But when I finally stayed in recovery, magic truly happened. The path and journey of my life were changed completely. I am a woman in long-term recovery from drug addiction. What that means for me is that I have been drug and alcohol-free since May 27, 2007. Learning about my soul and truly who I am has been difficult, scary, beautiful, and amazing. Being able to wake up every day and walk in my purpose is priceless. I want the same for you.
