During my tenure, I had the opportunity to interview an elderly man who was one of the original owners of a tea plantation not too far from Quito. The estate was established thirty years before our meeting. We discussed an authentic life experience, including one of my main characters, Sister Annett, who was the youngest of three nuns selected by the Catholic Church in Paris for an exchange program that brought her to Ecuador. Sister Annett is referred to as the Goddess of the Stars in the manuscript. In real life, she had no initial desire to become a nun. However, after the demise of her mother, she looked for comforting solace from her Parish Priest. She past many months mourning the memory of her mother. Without warning, Annett decided to become a nun. Her dispute with the church involved asking too many questions which was forbidden by the vows taken at the beginning of her religious experience. Being very young and beautiful, upon arrival in Ecuador, she could not understand why there was so much poverty in this country when the Church was financially sound. The storyline captivates her innocence and desire to convince the Cardinal, Bishop, and Mother Superior to use Church funds in the education of the Ecuadorian population. This would entail reading and writing, establishing small businesses to feed their families, and, in return, generating financial support for the Church. That suggestion fell on deaf ears. In the story, the three nuns, and priest, act as missionaries in the jungles of the Republic. The book’s adventure, for the most part, is a reflection of myself as the author. They encounter natives, both peaceful and hostile, including discovering a lost tribe of the Peruvian Inca. I invite the reader to sit back, relax, and enjoy reading this exceptional experience about an insight into life. Book excerpt: The Japanese army’s brutal four-month occupation of the city of Nanking during the 1937 Sino-Japanese War is known, for good reason, as “the rape of Nanking.” As they slaughtered an estimated three hundred thousand people, the invading soldiers raped more than twenty thousand women—some estimates run as high as eighty thousand. Hua-ling Hu presents here the amazing untold story of the American missionary Minnie Vautrin, whose unswerving defiance of the Japanese protected ten thousand Chinese women and children and made her a legend among the Chinese people she served. Vautrin, who came to be known in China as the “Living Goddess” or the “Goddess of Mercy,” joined the Foreign Christian Missionary Society and went to China during the Chinese Nationalist Revolution in 1912. As dean of studies at Ginling College in Nanking, she devoted her life to promoting Chinese women’s education and to helping the poor. At the outbreak of the war in July 1937, Vautrin defied the American embassy’s order to evacuate the city. After the fall of Nanking in December, Japanese soldiers went on a rampage of killing, burning, looting, rape, and torture, rapidly reducing the city to a hell on earth. On the fourth day of the occupation, Minnie Vautrin wrote in her diary: “There probably is no crime that has not been committed in this city today. . . . Oh, God, control the cruel beastliness of the soldiers in Nanking.” When the Japanese soldiers ordered Vautrin to leave the campus, she replied: “This is my home. I cannot leave.” Facing down the blood-stained bayonets constantly waved in her face, Vautrin shielded the desperate Chinese who sought asylum behind the gates of the college. Vautrin exhausted herself defying the Japanese army and caring for the refugees after the siege ended in March 1938. She even helped the women locate husbands and sons who had been taken away by the Japanese soldiers. She taught destitute widows the skills required to make a meager living and provided the best education her limited sources would allow to the children in desecrated Nanking. Finally suffering a nervous breakdown in 1940, Vautrin returned to the United States for medical treatment. One year later, she ended her own life. She considered herself a failure. Hu bases her biography on Vautrin’s correspondence between 1919 and 1941 and on her diary, maintained during the entire siege, as well as on Chinese, Japanese, and American eyewitness accounts, government documents, and interviews with Vautrin’s family.

The New Testament says: ‘We are all equal in the sight of God'. To be sure, this equality applies only to those who acknowledge God's existence. What this means is that alongside the abolition of class and nation within the community of believers, religion introduces a new fundamental distinction into the world the distinction between the right kind of believers and the wrong kind. Thus overtly or tacitly, religion brings with it the demonization of believers in other faiths. The central question that will decide the continued existence of humanity is this: How can we conceive of a type of inter-religious tolerance in which loving one's neighbor does not imply war to the death, a type of tolerance whose goal is not truth but peace? Is what we are experiencing at present a regression of monotheistic religion to a polytheism of the religious spirit under the heading of ‘a God of one's own'? In Western societies, where the autonomy of the individual has been internalized, individual human beings tend to feel increasingly at liberty to tell themselves little faith stories that fit their own lives to appoint ‘Gods of their own'. However, this God of their own is no longer the one and only God who presides over salvation by seizing control of history and empowering his followers to be intolerant and use naked force.
