Several funny stories as well as some serious ones about the Civil war have been added. Most of the stories are about my Granddad's preaching or his boyhood experiences and were originally told to entertain me. When I was a boy, our main source of entertainment was the radio, so my Granddad either told me stories about his experiences or made up stories. You will decide which ones he embellished. In this NEW VERSION, some first-hand Civil War stories are included that you won't find elsewhere. It is my privilege to publish stories by my Granddad, who tried unsuccessfully to publish them in the past. I am sure many of these stories will tickle you funny bone and give you a new Civil War insight.

Remember, in the late 1930s through the early 1950s, radio was our only source of entertainment. So early on, Granddad told me stories to entertain me. As a child and later, as an adult, I loved these stories. Even as I re-read these stories, many give me a chuckle. This book is a series of interesting and funny stories told by my Grandad. They are told as the 'Gospel Truth' and I leave it for you, the reader, to decide which may have been embellished.

Book The Supernatural and the Circuit Riders

Download or read book The Supernatural and the Circuit Riders written by Rimi Xhemajli and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Supernatural and the Circuit Riders, Rimi Xhemajli shows how a small but passionate movement grew and shook the religious world through astonishing signs and wonders. Beginning in the late eighteenth century, early American Methodist preachers, known as circuit riders, were appointed to evangelize the American frontier by presenting an experiential gospel: one that featured extraordinary phenomena that originated from God's Spirit. In employing this evangelistic strategy of the gospel message fueled by supernatural displays, Methodism rapidly expanded. Despite beginning with only ten official circuit riders in the early 1770s, by the early 1830s, circuit riders had multiplied and caused Methodism to become the largest American denomination of its day. In investigating the significance of the supernatural in the circuit rider ministry, Xhemajli provides a new historical perspective through his eye-opening demonstration of the correlation between the supernatural and the explosive membership growth of early American Methodism, which fueled the Second Great Awakening. In doing so, he also prompts the consideration of the relevance and reproduction of such acts in the American church today.

Book The Enslaved and Their Enslavers

Download or read book The Enslaved and Their Enslavers written by Edward Pearson and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Enslaved and Their Enslavers, Edward Pearson offers a sweeping history of slavery in South Carolina, from British settlement in 1670 to the dawn of the Civil War. For enslaved peoples, the shape of their daily lives depended primarily on the particular environment in which they lived and worked, and Pearson examines three distinctive settings in the province: the extensive rice and indigo plantations of the coastal plain; the streets, workshops, and wharves of Charleston; and the farms and estates of the upcountry. In doing so, he provides a fine-grained analysis of how enslaved laborers interacted with their enslavers in the workplace and other locations where they encountered one another as plantation agriculture came to dominate the colony. The Enslaved and Their Enslavers sets this portrait of early South Carolina against broader political events, economic developments, and social trends that also shaped the development of slavery in the region. For example, the outbreak of the American Revolution and the subsequent war against the British in the 1770s and early 1780s as well as the French and Haitian revolutions all had a profound impact on the institution's development, both in terms of what enslaved people drew from these events and how their enslavers responded to them. Throughout South Carolina's long history, enslaved people never accepted their enslavement passively and regularly demonstrated their fundamental opposition to the institution by engaging in acts of resistance, which ranged from vandalism to arson to escape, and, on rare occasions, organizing collectively against their oppression. Their attempts to subvert the institution in which they were held captive not only resulted in slaveowners tightening formal and informal mechanisms of control but also generated new forms of thinking about race and slavery among whites that eventually mutated into pro-slavery ideology and the myth of southern exceptionalism.

Book excerpt: In an astonishing history, a work of strikingly original research and interpretation, Heyrman shows how the evangelical Protestants of the late-18th century affronted the Southern Baptist majority of the day, not only by their opposition to slaveholding, war, and class privilege, but also by their espousal of the rights of the poor and their encouragement of women's public involvement in the church.
