Book excerpt: A collection of 58 diaries, of various sizes, handwritten daily in pen from 1945-2004 by Betty Geddes. There are no volumes for 2002 and 2003. Betty Geddes started keeping a diary after the birth of her son Peter, and to share with her husband when he returned from the war. The diaries contain list of visits, phone calls and letters written to family and friends, comments on the weather, important events - births deaths and marriages, and considerable detail on the social network that sustained her. Betty also recorded the costs of home and family, the books she read, her working life in the hospital and the nurses she trained with. She stopped recording the price of things when her family's income rose. Emotions in the diaries are very restrained. For example, on the day her husband came back from the war she just wrote WHAT A DAY!!. Box 1 contains 1945-1979; Box 2 contains 1980-1998; Box 3 contains 1999-2001 and 2004.
