Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diaries of the Emperor Frederick: During the Campaigns of 1866 and 1870-71, as Well as His Journeys to the East and to Spain It has been repeatedly suggested to the undersigned publisher by his friends and patrons that he should re-edit the Diaries of the august Monarch, as published in "Kaiser Friedrich: a New and Authorized Presentment," by Margarethe von Poschinger (3 vols., 1899-1900), thus making them accessible to a wider circle of the German nation. In view of the inestimable value which these notes possess, with regard to our knowledge of the thoughts and feelings of their distinguished Author, and as a contribution to the History of his Time, the firm has felt itself justified in acceding to the request. No one could paint a clear picture of the character of this Prince with greater sympathy, or make it appear more worthy of respect, than it is, as it stands out from his own Diaries. Book Moltke and his Generals

Download or read book Moltke and his Generals written by Quintin Barry and published by Helion. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Helmuth von Moltke took over as Chief of the Prussian General Staff, the Prussian army had not fought for more than forty years. Yet within a decade and a half he had brought it to the point where it was the strongest in Europe. His successes on the battle field led to his methods being painstakingly analyzed by commentators and slavishly imitated by Western armies. His success was not only due to far sighted strategic planning, the comprehensive reorganization of the General Staff and his grasp of new technologies; it was also due to his leadership of a talented, if disparate, group of subordinates, even if some of them sometimes failed to grasp his overall intentions. This book examines these key relationships. Foremost among these was his collaboration with the able though choleric Karl Leonhard von Blumenthal; their correspondence reflected every aspect of their campaigns. He was also close to the Crown Prince, whose aide de camp he had been. Moltke was Chief of Staff to Prince Frederick Charles in Denmark in 1864; his admiration for the ‘Red Prince’ was perhaps not maintained when the latter’s caution caused problems. Albrecht von Stosch, Intendant General in 1870–1871, proved brilliantly successful when he had the chance to demonstrate his talents in the field. Edwin von Manteuffel, on whose recommendation Moltke was appointed, was at the centre of Prussian politics for a decade and a half before becoming a successful army commander in 1866, and 1870–1871. Perhaps the most talented of Moltke's subordinates was August von Goeben, a successful commander in all three wars of German unification. August von Werder never enjoyed Moltke's confidence to the same extent, but was extremely reliable. On the other hand both Eduard Vogel von Falckenstein and Karl von Steinmetz caused Moltke considerable difficulty by their stubborn disobedience of his explicit orders. Behind these relationships there existed the vital rapport which Moltke had with their Chiefs of Staff and his own general staff officers. It was on his ability to rely on these men to execute his intentions that his success ultimately depended. Theophil von Podbielski, Julius Verdy du Vernois and Paul Bronsart von Schellendorf were some of the brilliant individuals who constituted one of the most powerful teams in military history.

Book Journals of Field Marshal Count Von Blumenthal for 1866 and 1870 1871

Download or read book Journals of Field Marshal Count Von Blumenthal for 1866 and 1870 1871 written by Field-Marshal Graf Leonhard Von Blumenthal and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes the Franco-Prussian Map Pack with over 35 maps, plans and diagrams of the engagements of the war Graf Leonhard Von Blumenthal 1810-1900 was a Prussian General Field Marshal of forthright and upstanding principles who became a legendary figure in the German army during the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian wars. After numerous staff and regimental appointments Von Blumenthal was assigned to be the Chief of the General Staff to the Crown Prince of Prussia, commanding the 2nd army, for the Austro-Prussian war in 1866. The post of Chief of the General Staff was intended to be that of a highly competent adviser to the royal titular commander of the army, and with it came great power of decision. It was upon the 2nd army that the brunt of the fighting fell during the short but brutal war, and its arrival at the battle of Königgratz saved the day. Von Blumenthal’s own part in the entire campaign and particularly on the battlefield of Königgratz was most conspicuous, the grateful Crown Prince said to him, “I know to whom I owe the conduct of my army”. The successful team of Crown Prince and Chief of the General Staff was revived for the struggle with the French during the Franco-Prussian war in 1870. Once again his service was nothing less than brilliant, particularly whilst herding the French Army into the bottleneck trap at Sedan. Bismarck himself said : “So far as one can see, the papers make no mention of him, although he is chief of the staff to the Crown Prince and, next after Moltke, deserves most credit for the conduct of the war. ... He won the battles of Wörth and Wissembourg, and after that of Sedan, as the Crown Prince was not always interfering with his plans.” These fascinating journals are an undiscovered gem of military writing and a particularly interesting sidelight on two often forgotten wars that still shape Europe today.
