Book Motor Function of the Pharynx Esophagus and Its Sphincters

Download or read book Motor Function of the Pharynx Esophagus and Its Sphincters written by Ravinder Mittal and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deglutition or a swallow begins as a voluntary act in the oral cavity but proceeds autonomously in the pharynx and esophagus. Bilateral sequenced activation and inhibition of more than 25 pairs of muscles of mouth, pharynx, larynx, and esophagus is required during a swallow. A single swallow elicits peristalsis in the pharynx and esophagus along with relaxation of upper and lower esophageal sphincters. Multiple swallows, at closely spaced time intervals, demonstrate deglutitive inhibition; sphincters remain relaxed during the entire period, but only the last swallow elicits peristalsis. Laryngeal inlet closure or airway protection is very important during swallow. Upper part of the esophagus that includes upper esophageal sphincter is composed of skeletal muscles, middle esophagus is composed of a mixture of skeletal and smooth muscles, and lower esophagus, including lower esophageal sphincter, is composed of smooth muscles. Peristalsis progresses in seamless fashion, despite separate control mechanism, from the skeletal to smooth muscle esophagus. The esophagus's circular and longitudinal muscle layers contract synchronously during peristalsis. Sphincters maintain continuous tone; neuromuscular mechanisms for tonic closure in the upper and lower esophageal sphincters are different. Lower esophageal sphincter transient relaxation, belching mechanism, regurgitation, vomiting, and reflux are mediated via the brain stem. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE DIAPHRAGM- The Muscle Source of Life is about the significant role of our muscular thoracic diaphragm. Since the diaphragm is a muscle, its function is limited to a contraction and a relaxation of its muscle fibers. Yet the effects on the body from this simple function of the diaphragm allows the sustaining of the existence of life and function. This book details information on the many ways the diaphragm function plays a very crucial role in the support and existence of life. The diaphragm is that important of a skeletal muscle such that it is the only skeletal muscle controlled by both the autonomic (involuntary, unconscious) and somatic (voluntary, conscious) nervous system. These systems work together to maintain a continuously working respiratory system by the influence of their control and regulation of the diaphragm. This combination of influence provides the body with the capability of generating and maintaining a relatively continuous in flow of air containing life giving oxygen and qi/chi for the body, as it is oxygen that we know to be a very crucial component for the production of energy in the body. This same combination of influence on the diaphragm, also gives the capability of generating and maintaining a relatively continuous out flow of air which is necessary for the removal of metabolic wastes that are created as a consequence of this energy production such as carbon dioxide. The diaphragm being in many ways the most important skeletal muscle for the preservation of life is often the one most overlooked. In addition, this book explains how the diaphragm gives rise to a purpose for the heart and lungs as well as support brain function and that it is the diaphragm that should be called on for increased health, power, longevity, and spirituality. It also explains how the somatic or voluntary function of the diaphragm is one that has the potential to level the playing field for everyone, as the efficiency of the body is dependent upon its own oxygen availability which then has a direct effect on the energy availability in our bodies, which is directly controlled by the function of the diaphragm. There are also simple exercises detailed to perform for the strengthening practice of the diaphragm that does not require strenuous exercise that can be practiced just about anywhere as long as you bring your diaphragm with you, just kidding. These exercises, however, require the engagement of the somatic or voluntary conscious control to help maximize the function of the diaphragm. In its support with breathing maximizing the function of the diaphragm will not only make this muscle stronger but it will also help to maximize the intake of oxygen, maximize the movement of certain crucial fluids in the body as well as maximize removal of wastes predominately carbon dioxide helping to maintain a healthy normal pH of the blood while improving immune function.

Book The Five Osteopathic Models

Download or read book The Five Osteopathic Models written by Giampiero Fusco and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far from being simply a sequence of techniques, as practised in many countries osteopathy is an independent primary health care system based on principles applied through a manual practice: a unique profession that takes care of the whole person through the application of five models (biomechanical, neurological, respiratory-circulatory, metabolic, and behavioral). These conceptual models of the relationship between structure and function allow osteopaths to evaluate treatment with the aim of promoting health rather than curing disease. This book is intended as a manual for both students and osteopathic professionals interested in exploring the principles, objectives, origins and application of the five osteopathic models, from traditional concepts up to a modern vision, based on evidence and critical thinking. The selection criteria and rules for the application of each model, with their limitations and potential, are examined, to enable the reader to understand the rationale behind their use in a comprehensive, holistic and patient-centered practice.

  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book Breath written by James Nestor and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-05-26 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller A Washington Post Notable Nonfiction Book of 2020 Named a Best Book of 2020 by NPR “A fascinating scientific, cultural, spiritual and evolutionary history of the way humans breathe—and how we’ve all been doing it wrong for a long, long time.” —Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Big Magic and Eat Pray Love No matter what you eat, how much you exercise, how skinny or young or wise you are, none of it matters if you’re not breathing properly. There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing: take air in, let it out, repeat twenty-five thousand times a day. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices like Pranayama, Sudarshan Kriya, and Tummo and teams up with pulmonary tinkerers to scientifically test long-held beliefs about how we breathe. Modern research is showing us that making even slight adjustments to the way we inhale and exhale can jump-start athletic performance; rejuvenate internal organs; halt snoring, asthma, and autoimmune disease; and even straighten scoliotic spines. None of this should be possible, and yet it is. Drawing on thousands of years of medical texts and recent cutting-edge studies in pulmonology, psychology, biochemistry, and human physiology, Breath turns the conventional wisdom of what we thought we knew about our most basic biological function on its head. You will never breathe the same again.

This book was released on 2014-03-10 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When analyzing the results of diagnostic imaging studies, the radiologist traditionally makes reference to particular features representative of normality or pathology. Most of these features are associated with images of the world around us. This pictorial issue contains nearly 400 illustrations and descriptions of more than 100 classic radiological signs of chest and abdominal diseases that are not named after authors but based on metaphors derived from contemplation of our environment. By correlating the results of computed tomography with these vivid descriptive images, readers will be able to memorize typical and often pathognomonic patterns of disease more quickly and more easily. This book will be of value for both radiology residents and more experienced radiologists.
