Book Women Race Class

Download or read book Women Race Class written by Angela Y. Davis and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-06-29 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of our most important scholars and civil rights activist icon, a powerful study of the women’s liberation movement and the tangled knot of oppression facing Black women. “Angela Davis is herself a woman of undeniable courage. She should be heard.”—The New York Times Angela Davis provides a powerful history of the social and political influence of whiteness and elitism in feminism, from abolitionist days to the present, and demonstrates how the racist and classist biases of its leaders inevitably hampered any collective ambitions. While Black women were aided by some activists like Sarah and Angelina Grimke and the suffrage cause found unwavering support in Frederick Douglass, many women played on the fears of white supremacists for political gain rather than take an intersectional approach to liberation. Here, Davis not only contextualizes the legacy and pitfalls of civil and women’s rights activists, but also discusses Communist women, the murder of Emmitt Till, and Margaret Sanger’s racism. Davis shows readers how the inequalities between Black and white women influence the contemporary issues of rape, reproductive freedom, housework and child care in this bold and indispensable work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Adair's History of the American Indians" by James Adair is a classic study of southeastern Native American culture of the late colonial period from 1735 to 1768. It's one of the few primary sources from that time period that aims to understand that culture, even if it's from the skewed view of an English settler. Even considering it's flaws, the book is considered one of the finest histories of the Native Americans.

  • Author : Constance Backhouse
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press

Download or read book Colour Coded written by Constance Backhouse and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1999-11-20 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically Canadians have considered themselves to be more or less free of racial prejudice. Although this conception has been challenged in recent years, it has not been completely dispelled. In Colour-Coded, Constance Backhouse illustrates the tenacious hold that white supremacy had on our legal system in the first half of this century, and underscores the damaging legacy of inequality that continues today. Backhouse presents detailed narratives of six court cases, each giving evidence of blatant racism created and enforced through law. The cases focus on Aboriginal, Inuit, Chinese-Canadian, and African-Canadian individuals, taking us from the criminal prosecution of traditional Aboriginal dance to the trial of members of the 'Ku Klux Klan of Kanada.' From thousands of possibilities, Backhouse has selected studies that constitute central moments in the legal history of race in Canada. Her selection also considers a wide range of legal forums, including administrative rulings by municipal councils, criminal trials before police magistrates, and criminal and civil cases heard by the highest courts in the provinces and by the Supreme Court of Canada. The extensive and detailed documentation presented here leaves no doubt that the Canadian legal system played a dominant role in creating and preserving racial discrimination. A central message of this book is that racism is deeply embedded in Canadian history despite Canada's reputation as a raceless society. Winner of the Joseph Brant Award, presented by the Ontario Historical Society

Download or read book From Noah to Hercules written by Brian Forbes and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How far back does history go? What did the inventers of writing say about where people come from? How could anyone believe in the pagan gods? Why do so many cultures have a seven-day week? Does history repeat itself? What could we read to find this stuff out? And what about those gods of Greece? Who thought of them, and what made their beliefs strong enough to spend vast sums to honor them, even across language barriers? What about Noah and his flood? What about Babel? How do they all fit together? In From Noah to Hercules, Brian Forbes answers these questions by investigating various accounts of the origins of mankind. Forbes draws on Scripture, history, and science to argue that many gods and mythical figures from civilizations past were actually historic figures. Forbes goes on to conclude that many mythological stories are historically accurate if you remove some of the more fantastic elements. Forbes offers a fascinating account of early man based on ancient history and mythology. He will change the way you think about our history and our ancestors.
