Book Diamonds in the Desert

Download or read book Diamonds in the Desert written by Olga Levinson and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well written anecdotal account of the early days of diamond production in Namibia focuses on the settler pioneer August Stauch, who has also become a legend among the settler community today. The author gives a vivid description of the major diamond discoveries and the rush for claims in 1908, followed by the struggle for control and monopoly which eventually led to the takeover by De Beers. It also deals with the political career of August Stauch as a member of the old "Landesrat" and of the Legislative Assembly established in 1926, and describes the fall of his business empire in Germany and Namibia in the interwar period. The biography glorifies a time which, in the overall history of diamond mining in Namibia, is relatively unimportant, and tends to reinforce dearly held colonial myths ("the men who made South West"). It is lavishly illustrated with photos, drawings and facsimile prints of documents. (Eriksen/Moorsom 1989).

Book excerpt: For millions of years, a bounty of unimaginable riches lay hidden deep within the scorched wastelands of the Namib desert. Diamonds. Some men cracked the earth to own them. Some men died. For ex-soldier Jason Green, the job was unexpected but the brief was simple. At the most remote diamond mine in the world, something was wrong. Badly wrong. The insurance firm was deeply concerned. The running costs were enormous, the claims, suspicious. What were the dark secrets that had been so carefully concealed? Secrets buried as deep as the glittering stones themselves. Jason Green uncovers the truth but his astonishing discovery sets off a chain of events that result in hideous violence and cold-blooded murder. The architect of this horror must be stopped, but for Green, there are personal scores to settle. The action builds to a frenzy in this ferociously fast-paced thriller, and the heart-stopping climax will be embedded in your mind for a long time. A very long time.

Book excerpt: An enthralling tale of discovery and adventure littered with a sense of daring and romance, the intrigue of the stock market mixed with the brutal harshness of the Australian outback and the dangers of the African jungle. En route from Melbourne to Singapore, the Jumbo Jet makes a forced landing in the remote far north west of Australia. This leads to the discovery of an extremely rich vein of Blue Diamonds that Jack Murray develops into a small but successful mining company with the assistance of a well known diamond producer. Listing on the Australian Stock Exchange sees the company’s fortunes rapidly grow and provide a rich return to investors. Receiving an offer too good to refuse, Jack sells out to a South African venture organization that has disastrous results in its attempts to increase production. With persuasion from disgruntled investors, Jack buys back the company at a rock bottom price that includes a lease to a diamond mine in the turbulent African country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. With his partner, Jack relocates to the eastern regions of the troubled DRC and re-opens the mine with the help of untrained but enthusiastic local workers. Conflict soon erupts with rebel leaders from neighbouring Rwanda that threatens the lives of all involved

Book Flight of the Diamond Smugglers A Tale of Pigeons Obsession and Greed Along Coastal South Africa

Download or read book Flight of the Diamond Smugglers A Tale of Pigeons Obsession and Greed Along Coastal South Africa written by Matthew Gavin Frank and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Unforgettable. . . . An outstanding adventure in its lyrical, utterly compelling, and heartbreaking investigations of the world of diamond smuggling.” —Aimee Nezhukumatathil For nearly eighty years, a huge portion of coastal South Africa was closed off to the public. With many of its pits now deemed “overmined” and abandoned, American journalist Matthew Gavin Frank sets out across the infamous Diamond Coast to investigate an illicit trade that supplies a global market. Immediately, he became intrigued by the ingenious methods used in facilitating smuggling particularly, the illegal act of sneaking carrier pigeons onto mine property, affixing diamonds to their feet, and sending them into the air. Entering Die Sperrgebiet (“The Forbidden Zone”) is like entering an eerie ghost town, but Frank is surprised by the number of people willing—even eager—to talk with him. Soon he meets Msizi, a young diamond digger, and his pigeon, Bartholomew, who helps him steal diamonds. It’s a deadly game: pigeons are shot on sight by mine security, and Msizi knows of smugglers who have disappeared because of their crimes. For this, Msizi blames “Mr. Lester,” an evil tall-tale figure of mythic proportions. From the mining towns of Alexander Bay and Port Nolloth, through the “halfway” desert, to Kleinzee’s shores littered with shipwrecks, Frank investigates a long overlooked story. Weaving interviews with local diamond miners who raise pigeons in secret with harrowing anecdotes from former heads of security, environmental managers, and vigilante pigeon hunters, Frank reveals how these feathered bandits became outlaws in every mining town. Interwoven throughout this obsessive quest are epic legends in which pigeons and diamonds intersect, such as that of Krishna’s famed diamond Koh-i-Noor, the Mountain of Light, and that of the Cherokee serpent Uktena. In these strange connections, where truth forever tangles with the lore of centuries past, Frank is able to contextualize the personal grief that sent him, with his wife Louisa in the passenger seat, on this enlightening journey across parched lands. Blending elements of reportage, memoir, and incantation, Flight of the Diamond Smugglers is a rare and remarkable portrait of exploitation and greed in one of the most dangerous areas of coastal South Africa. With his sovereign prose and insatiable curiosity, Matthew Gavin Frank “reminds us that the world is a place of wonder if only we look” (Toby Muse).

Book The History of Mining

Download or read book The History of Mining written by Michael Coulson and published by Harriman House Limited. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE INDUSTRY THAT FORGED THE MODERN WORLD Throughout history metals and raw materials have underpinned human activity. So it is that the industry responsible for extracting these materials from the ground - mining - has been ever present throughout the history of civilisation, from the ancient world of the Egyptians and Romans, to the industrial revolution and the British Empire, and through to the present day, with mining firms well represented on the world's most important stock indexes including the FTSE100. This book traces the history of mining from those early moments when man first started using tools to the present day where metals continue to underpin economic activity in the post industrial age. In doing so, the history of mining methods, important events, technological developments, the important firms and the sparkling personalities that built the industry are examined in detail. At every stage, as the history of mining is traced from 40,000BC to the present day, the level of detail increases in accordance with the greater social and industrial developments that have played out as time has progressed. This means that a particular focus is given to the period since the industrial revolution and especially the 20th century. A look is also taken into the future in an effort to chart the direction this great industry might take in years to come. Many books have been written about mining; the majority have focused on a particular metal, geographical area, mining event or mining personality, but 'The History of Mining' has a broader scope and covers all of these essential and fascinating areas in one definitive volume.
