They try to distract attention from themselves by inciting hatred against a fellow student named Noëlle. Rémy, Mattéo and Réjane build up many contacts and recruit new people. They take every opportunity to get money. Rémy and his gang have already stolen cash and jewelry worth half a million and no one suspects them. Now Rémy is planning a diamond robbery. One of his customers (a jeweler) has told him that he is going on a long vacation and Rémy does not want to miss this opportunity. During the preparations for the robbery, Noëlle shadows one of Rémy's men and discovers that he is planning something bigger. The criminals get hold of the codes for the villa's alarm system and they also have an explosives expert on hand. Since the residential area has its own security service, the time window in which they can enter the villa is limited. Another problem is a real estate agent who is supposed to sell the villa and keeps turning up on the property. Luckily for the students, they have found out that she is into young students, perfect conditions for them. And so some of her men start an affair with her. Noëlle and several police officers continue to follow Rémy and his men. When Rémy receives a call from a judge who wants to buy his freedom from Rémy, the judge pretends to accept the offer. He arranges to meet him at the port to hand over the money, and together with his accomplices he plans to murder the judge. Almost at the same time, he lures a judge into a trap so that he has someone on his side if he is charged. The judge does not take this lying down and follows Rémy to the port, where he surprises him and there is a death. Rémy and Mattéo pin this murder on the judge. Rémy now believes that he has the judge in his hands, but she learns from Noëlle that everything was recorded and that she can therefore prove her innocence. The investigators are hot on the heels of the gang of thieves. Rémy sets a fire in the police station and blocks the emergency exits. This is how he tries to get rid of his opponents. But they are rescued by the fire brigade. A corrupt fireman takes advantage of the chaos to steal and destroy the evidence against Rémy. Meanwhile, explosives expert Gaston, with whom Réjane is having an affair, plans to use the situation to his advantage. He wants to steal the diamonds from the students.
Download or read book Flawless Inside the Largest Diamond Heist in History written by Scott Andrew Selby and published by Sterling Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tells the story with the gripping pace of a true-crime 'Ocean's Eleven.'" The New York Post • "Like a diamond, this true-life caper is clear, colorful, and brilliant." Publishers Weekly ★Starred Review★ The Antwerp Diamond Center was one of the most secure buildings in the world. With hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of diamonds stored in its subterranean vault, it had to be. Located in the heart of Belgium's ultra-secure Antwerp Diamond District, it benefited from two police stations, armed patrols, extensive video surveillance, and vehicle barriers securing an area where 80 percent of the world's diamonds traded hands. But on February 15, 2003, a band of skilled Italian thieves — fronted by the charming Leonardo Notarbartolo, who spent over two years clandestinely casing the building — subverted every one of the Diamond Center's defenses and made off with a record amount of loot. Experts estimate they got away with nearly half a billion dollars in diamonds, cash and other valuables. They'd pulled off the biggest heist in history--everybody loves diamonds and they now had more than any thief before them. The robbers did it with stealth and smarts; no one was hurt or even threatened during what was quickly labeled the largest diamond heist in history. The bandits — members of a group of professional thieves known as "The School of Turin" — used cunning in lieu of violence, successfully evading security cameras, thwarting an array of electronic sensors, and penetrating a vault protected by a double-locked foot-thick steel door. Even when the police zeroed in on who committed the crime, how it was done remained a mystery, like something out of a heist movie or TV show. Flawless is a fast-paced global scavenger hunt uncovering the truth behind the daring Valentine's Day weekend heist. Tracking clues, sources, and documents throughout Europe — from seedy cafés in Turin, Italy to sleek diamond offices in Antwerp, Belgium — authors Scott Selby and Greg Campbell retrace Notarbartolo's careful discovery of the building's security flaws. They recreate the heist and its aftermath — detailing how the thieves brilliantly neutralized each element of the security protecting the Diamond Center's vault while inviting the readers into the secretive world of diamonds and diamond dealing. The result is a thrilling ride through the better-than-fiction heist of the century. "Fans of caper books and movies will be in seventh heaven." Booklist ★Starred Review★
Download or read book The Great Diamond Heist The Incredible True Story of the Hatton Garden Diamond Geezers written by Gordon Bowers and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the Easter weekend in 2015, an audacious gang of criminals robbed a safe depository in London's Hatton Garden, the centre of the UK's diamond trade. Shortly before, electrical cables under nearby Kingsway had caught on fire, disrupting the emergency services in the area. Coincidence? Alarms at Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Ltd went off, but the police ignored them. The burglars were caught on CCTV taking jewellery worth up to $200 million. They had used specialist equipment, taking days to tunnel through the walls of the vault. Within a month nine suspects had been arrested and valuables seized from their homes. They were aged between forty-three and seventy-six, including a father and son. The question was, were they the same gang that had made a similar daring raid in Hatton Garden safe netting £1.5 million over the Christmas holiday in 2004. The culprits then were never caught. In 1986, a similar heist had taken place in Los Angeles where a gang drilled a 100- foot tunnel from a storm drain into the vaults of the First Interstate Bank in West Hollywood. It inspired the novel The Black Echo. Author Michael Connelly believes his book might have inspired the Hatton Garden heists, and has a grudging respect for the criminals. "There is no violence and they sweated for the money. And there is a certain class envy," he said. "We don’t feel too sorry for people who keep fortunes hidden away in safety deposit boxes. Part of us hopes the gang members are now lying on a beach somewhere." However, what the Hatton Garden heist so victimless? There have been suggestions that the safety deposit raid was linked to the murder of John 'Goldfinger' Palmer – a suspect in the 1983 Brink's-Mat bullion robbery who was gunned down in Essex in July. The question remains: was Palmer killed for tipping off police about possible suspects?

Book excerpt: A “deeply researched and brilliantly written” blueprint to the criminal possibilities in the world all around us (Warren Ellis, author of Gun Machine). At the core of A Burglar’s Guide to the City is an unexpected and thrilling insight: how any building transforms when seen through the eyes of someone hoping to break into it. Studying architecture the way a burglar would, Geoff Manaugh takes readers through walls, down elevator shafts, into panic rooms, and out across the rooftops of an unsuspecting city. Encompassing nearly two thousand years of heists and break-ins, the book draws on the expertise of reformed bank robbers, FBI special agents, private security consultants, the LAPD Air Support Division, and architects past and present. Whether discussing how to pick padlocks, climb the walls of high-rise apartments, find gaps in a museum’s surveillance routine, or discuss home invasions in ancient Rome, A Burglar’s Guide to the City ensures readers will never enter a bank again without imagining how to loot the vault, or walk down the street without planning the perfect getaway. Praise for A Burglar’s Guide to the City “This burglar’s guide isn’t for ordinary smash-and-grab burglars, it’s for the rest of us—who steal in, steal out, and get away with glorious dreams. A spectacularly fun read.” —Robert Krulwich, cohost of Radiolab “Who knew that urban studies could be so riveting? Geoff Manaugh excels at finding new, illicit, and fresh angles on a subject as loved as it is overexposed—the city. In his new book, elegant, perverse, sinuous supervillains maneuver and master the city like parkour champions. I see the TV series already.” —Paola Antonelli, design curator, MoMA

Download or read book Crimes of the 90s written by Marcus Edward Bond and published by Marcus Edward Bond. This book was released on 2024-03-24 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1990s saw a range of notable crimes that captured public attention and left a lasting impact on society. From high-profile murders to acts of domestic terrorism, the decade was marked by a variety of criminal incidents that reflected the complexities of the era. One of the most infamous crimes of the 1990s was the O.J. Simpson murder trial, which captivated the nation and sparked widespread debate about race, celebrity, and the criminal justice system. The trial, which centered around the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, became a cultural phenomenon and highlighted issues of domestic violence and media sensationalism. Another significant event was the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, carried out by domestic terrorists Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols. The bombing, which targeted the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, resulted in the deaths of 168 people and remains one of the deadliest acts of domestic terrorism in U.S. history. Other notable crimes of the 1990s included the World Trade Center bombing in 1993, the Unabomber attacks carried out by Theodore Kaczynski, and the Heaven's Gate mass suicide in 1997. These incidents, along with numerous others, contributed to a sense of unease and uncertainty during the decade and prompted discussions about issues such as terrorism, mental illness, and the role of the media in shaping public perception. Overall, the crimes of the 1990s serve as a reminder of the complexities of the era and the challenges faced by society in addressing issues of crime, violence, and social justice. They continue to be studied and discussed as part of our collective understanding of the recent past and its impact on the present day.
