Book Diameter density Relationships Provide Tentative Spacing Guidelines for Eucalyptus Saligna in Hawaii

Download or read book Diameter density Relationships Provide Tentative Spacing Guidelines for Eucalyptus Saligna in Hawaii written by Dean S. DeBell and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trials have been established in Hawaii to develop spacing guidelines for Eucalyptus saligna plantations. Substantial competition-related mortalicy occurred in densely planted plots of three spacing trials. Data on stand diameter and surviving number of trees on these plots were plotted in logarithmic form to estimate a "self-thinning" or maximum diameter-stand density line. An "operating" maximum line was defined-one representing 70 percent of the total number of trees that could reach any given mean diameter if the stand were allowed to reach the "self-thinning" level. This information provides a guide to the number of E. saligna trees to plant per hectare for selected target diameters at harvest.

Book Measuring Soil and Tree Temperatures During Prescribed Fires with Thermocouple Probes

Download or read book Measuring Soil and Tree Temperatures During Prescribed Fires with Thermocouple Probes written by Stephen S. Sackett and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil and cambium temperatures must be known to ascertain certain effects of prescribed fires on trees. Thermocouple-based systems were devised for measuring soil and cambium temperatures during prescribed fires. The systems, which incorporate both commercially available and custom components, perform three basic functions: data collection, data retrieval, and data translation. Although the systems and procedures for using them were designed for research purposes, they could be adapted for monitoring operational prescribed fires.

Book Agroforestry in Sustainable Agricultural Systems

Download or read book Agroforestry in Sustainable Agricultural Systems written by Louise E. Buck and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-12-28 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agroforestry in Sustainable Agricultural Systems examines the environmental and social conditions that affect the roles and performance of trees in field- and forest-based agricultural production systems. Various types of ecological settings for agroforestry are analyzed within temperate and tropical regions. The roles of soil, water, light, nutrient and pest management in mixed, annual, woody perennial and livestock systems are discussed. Important new case studies from around the world offer innovative strategies that have been used successfully in raising forests and tree products on a sustainable basis for commercial harvesting and for providing other environmental services in land conservation and watershed management.

Book Restoration of Tropical Forest Ecosystems

Download or read book Restoration of Tropical Forest Ecosystems written by Helmut Lieth and published by Springer. This book was released on 1914 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The destruction of the tropical forests continues rapidly. We all know that this has global, ecological and economic consequences. The problem is of such magnitude that it can only be compared to warfare. The destruction of tropical forests is both detrimental to the global ecology as well as posing a serious threat to the people living in these areas. Furthermore, the overutilization of such a valuable resource poses a serious threat to the next generations. Besides the problem generated for the people in these regions, and for the earth in general, there is a moral obligation to preserve the vast biological diversity in the tropical forests. We have a commitment to all species on earth as well as man and, therefore, need to preserve as many as possible, if not all. This book discusses the problem from different angles: from forestry, ecology and nature conservation. The two main problem areas are: first the wise utilization of that portion of the forest which will be used - especially the introduction of planned forestry in such areas and second the development of a good plan for nature conservation in the tropics.
