Book excerpt: Abstract: The Polar spacecraft provided over a decade of quality observations in the high latitude regions of Earth's magnetosphere. After on-orbit operations terminated, some questions raised early in the mission remained unanswered. Polar made the first observations of energetic particles in the cusp, with easy access to the ring current and radiation belt. Understanding their source has potential implications for spacecraft operations and exploration activities. Cusp acceleration, possibly in the large diamagnetic cavities observed by Polar, would provide a new source of energized particles in the magnetosphere. To analyze the cusp energetic particle (CEP) population, I converted MICS energetic particle data from telemetry to physical units by energy, species, and pitch angle, producing a final archive of MICS data. In several case studies, I found the magnetic field and plasma pressure were anticorrelated inside, but not outside, cusp diamagnetic cavities (CDCs). There appeared to be sufficient energy in the plasma to support the cavities against collapse. The cavities and energetic particles were strongly associated, although the energetic particle density was insufficient to cause the diamagnetic depression. Energetic particles were of both ionospheric and solar wind origin, while the lower-energy particles inside CDCs were almost exclusively alpha particles, of solar wind origin. I prepared a six-year database of cusp crossings to study CDC and CEP size, relation- ship to each other, and reaction to external drivers. The CDCs were large in latitude and local time, but radially shallow, not extending far from the magnetopause. CEPs were observed farther inside the magnetosphere. CEPs and CDCs were observed together on the same pass with a greater frequency than expected from random distribution. I found only minor contribution to CEPs from energization in substorms. Cusp observations showed no difference in CEP frequency between connection to the quasi-parallel and quasi-perpendicular bow shock, indicating the shock was not a significant source of CEPs. Combining this lack of response to other sources with the strong association between CDCs and CEPs implies that CDC acceleration is a potential source of energetic particles in the magnetosphere, requiring further investigation.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The Earth's magnetic cusps are the regions with the most direct transfer of energy, mass, and momentum from the flowing solar wind to the Earth's magnetosphere. Spacecraft observations in the cusp have revealed a high energy component to the thermal particle distribution. This has raised the question as to whether significant plasma heating may also be occurring in this region. Since the cusp is magnetically connected to a number of other regions in geospace, plasma heating in this region could be a significant contributor to magnetospheric dynamics. The goal of this thesis is to answer the question, what is the source of the energetic particle population in the cusp? Since the initial observations measuring the energetic component were made, the source of the energetic population has been open to conjecture. A number of sources have been proposed: (1) the terrestrial bow shock, (2) the Earth's high-latitude trapping region, and (3) heating of plasma locally in the cusp. Depending on which source is the dominant provider of the energetic particles, the particle population will exhibit different properties. Particle flow direction, intensity, spectral characteristics, and species/charge state are all properties that can change depending on the dominant source. In-situ measurements by the ISEE, Polar, and Cluster spacecraft are used to derive the particle properties. These properties are compared with predictions for each of the proposed sources to determine which is most consistent with the observations. Case studies show that, under different conditions, the high-latitude trapping region and local heating can both be the dominant source of the energetic particle population up to energies of hundreds of keV. Results from a large scale statistical study, however, are more consistent with local heating indicating that this is the dominant source the majority of the time.

The geo-magnetic cusps offer solar wind plasma a relatively easy entry point into the magnetosphere through magnetic reconnection with the interplanetary magnetic field. The cusp regions are characterized by various interesting and important observations such as low energy particle precipitation, significant outflow of ionospheric material, and the frequent presence of energetic particles in regions of depressed magnetic field strength. The physical mechanisms which lead to these observations are often unresolved. For instance, the acceleration mechanism for energetic cusp populations is not understood, nor is it known what implications they may have on magnetospheric dynamics It is however, well accepted that magnetic reconnection plays a critical role in the vicinity of the cusps and is likely responsible for much of the dynamics in the region. Modeling of the geomagnetic cusps is notoriously challenging. Global magnetospheric models have proven indispensable in the study of the interaction of the solar wind plasma with the Earth's magnetosphere, however, the exterior cusp region poses a significant challenge for these models due to their relatively small scale. I have developed a mesoscale cusp-like magnetic field model in order to provide a better resolution (up to 300 km) of the entire cusp region than is possible in these global models. Typical observational features of the high-altitude cusps are well reproduced by the simulation. Results for both strongly northward and strongly southward interplanetary magnetic field indicate extended regions of depressed magnetic field and strongly enhanced plasma ß (cusp diamagnetic cavities). The Alfvénic nature of the outer boundary between the cusp and magnetosheath, in addition to the flow characteristics in the region, indicate that magnetic reconnection plays an important role in structuring the high-altitude cusp region. The inner boundaries with magnetosphere are gradual transitions forming a clear funnel. These cavities further present a unique configuration in which reconnecting magnetic flux tubes may gain a significant amount of flux tube entropy (H = p1/V) through topological changes due to magnetic reconnection.

The magnetospheric str- ture has been mapped and major processes determining this structure have been de?ned. However, the picture obtained is too often static. We know how the magnetosphere forms via the interaction of the solar wind and IMF with the Earth’s magnetic ?eld. We can describe the steady state for various upstream conditions but do not really understand the dynamic processes leading from one state to another. The main dif?culty is that the magnetosphere is a comp- cated system with many time constants ranging from fractions of a second to days and the system rarely attains a steady state. Two decades ago, it became clear that further progress would require multi-point measurements. Since then, two multi-spacecraft missions have been launched — INTERBALL in 1995/96 and CLUSTER II in 2000. The objectives of these missions d- fered but were complementary: While CLUSTER is adapted to meso-scale processes, INTERBALL observed larger spatial and temporal scales. However, the number of papers taking advantage of both missions simul- neously is rather small.

Book excerpt: These proceedings are based upon introductory talks, research reports and discussions from the NATO Advanced Workshop on the "Morphology and Dynamics of the Polar Cusp", held at Lillehammer, Norway, 7-12 May, 1984. The upper atmosphere at high latitudes is called the "Earth's win dow to outer space". Through various electrodynamic coupling process es as well as through direct transfer of particles many geophysical effects displayed there are direct manifestations of phenomena occurring in the deep space. The high latitude ionosphere will also exert a feedback on the regions of the magnetosphere and atmosphere to which it is coupled, acting as a momentum and energy source and sink, and a source of particles. Of particular interest are the sections of the near space known as the Polar Cusp. A vast portion of the earth's magnetic field envelope is electrically connected to these regions. This geometry results in a spatial mapping of the magnetospheric pro cesses and a focusing on to the ionosphere. In the Polar Cusps the solar wind plasma has also direct access to the upper atmosphere. The polar regions are thus of extreme importance when it comes to under standing the physical processes in the near space and their effect on our environment. The Introductory Talks given at this workshop provided a common background for discussing and understanding the physics of the Polar Cusp. By this book we will make the information which thus was provid ed to the participants of the workshop accessible to a wider audience.
